- Abandoned McDonald's - Pittsburgh, Pa. Unexpected closure of this restaurant took place just before New Year's Day 2020. What will become of this place? I don't even know. Since I've filmed this place, I've driven by it a couple of times and there has been no change.

As of 3/1/2020, the place has been completely fenced off. You cannot even step foot in the parking lot. There has been graffiti spray painted all over the building. Will keep you posted for updates.
Let us know I just saw this video for the first time

Now I’m kind of mad because once again I’m going to be performing in the St. Patrick’s Day parade where the bloody sin am I going to get breakfast before the thing starts urgh!
Can you do a update on here
YUNGSN1PERBO117 PS4 the building is leveled and gone.
That McDonalds looks like right out of the 70’s! The ones I miss seeing now days!
Mischief MakerStudios im sure the food was better too
Same here! Up here in Grand Rapids, Michigan there still stands a old Arbies building! Now a diff independent restaurant but kept the shape!
We recently bought that site from the previous franchise owner.
You’ll have to wait and see what we turn it into 😉
Maybe a Rax? Pittsburgh Dad could do the opening. 😂
Another Primanti Bros? The 'burgh loves PBs, not so much mds!
@@crazeyjoe there is literally a Primantis a street away! LOL!
@@imanobody544 hey if they opened a Rax, I want to be there for the opening as well!
@@WallieB26 The 'burgh could use a Cajun/Creole place. Crafwish boil, po' boys, gator bites, etouffee, gumbo, blackened catfish...ooo yeah!
I’m shocked. That location was always busy.
Neil K Walk 💯💯💯
They don’t make a profit there
@@JTB128650 how?
I was shocked too whenever I went there.
Article is here - triblive.com/local/pittsburgh-allegheny/mcdonalds-in-pittsburghs-strip-district-closes-without-explanation/
Wow, thank you for sharing your time and talent. There are quite a few MAJOR venues being built near this location.
Your pittsburgh accent makes me so happy and proud to be from there
He is quite the Yinzer.
Let’s go dahtahn and watch (insert correct sports team based on the month) at primantis. We’ll eat sammitches an’nat 🤣
I forgot about there was a McDonald's next to the former Altar Bar and since you brought it up, I only went to the AB once back in 2016 to see Metal Church play there.
I remember that.
Whoa I had no idea that McD's is now abandoned! And yes, that was the place to hang out while waiting for a show when the Altar Bar was next door. We're not even part of the older generation of Pittsburghers who have seen the city change over the decades. Our recent pasts are already disappearing
Don’t see a lot of old abandoned vintage McDonald’s around here this location looks good though sad it’s abandoned
DUDE! CONGRATS ON 20K SUBS !! WOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
if they even bothered to tell the employees I bet they didn't tell them until the last day
That’s usually how it goes. I had a friend who worked for KFC, and they closed that and two other locations nearby. They didn’t tell anyone until the day of closing so that the employees would show up and not just quit early. It’s pretty fucked up.
Its interesting that it has a sign that says “restrooms for McDonalds customers only” around here no fast food restaurants care or would enforce this. And McDonalds is pretty well known as a stop on a roadtrip for restroom breaks.
just buy some some chips.
Altar Bar used to be my favorite venue. Saw Norma Jean there, Horse the Band, Kittie, Fishbone, and Misfits was the last show I saw there. RIP
Probably a franchised store and they did not want to spend the money to remodel into the new funeral home look.
Had to be i worked at one around 99 we still had the drive though conveyer belt and that was a franchise had the ps1 and n64 too lol
@@yakamarezlife was that in Springfield MO by any chance?
@f you that's right you do understand that Pittsburgh is a majority White City right? The reason it has bulletproof glass is because it's downtown it got robbed alot
@f you that's right and they pulled out because the club closed that was 95 percent of there business that location is on the Northside there's jackshit there you can't even take a bus over there you have to drive a car or get a ride that's why it closed not a lot of business outside of the weekends
i hate the new look
Abandoned is a bit much for "recently closed and still being disassembled"
Abandon means no one is keeping up with it/ live there or it’s being in use. So abandon is the right word.
I love your channel man, at 1st I came across a video like 5 minutes from my house & I just never left lol
I liked these old McDonald buildings. Come up to Butler, pa
on Route 8 South when just leaving Butler, next to the Super 8 and across from the Days Inn is an abandoned dine in style Pizza Hut. Its been abandon since last spring due to a fire that started in the back and went through the roof. most of the building was untouched, the building is not blocked off but they recently took down the Pizza Hut sign out front. I would love to see you explore that one.
Unfortunately if you didn't know, it's now a Duncan donuts, the old pizza hut
@@brandyrodgers4329 yeah they did that about a year ago, when this comment was made it was still abandoned Pizza Hut.
Atleast they do something with it.
Awesome video - appreciate what you are doing....keep it up!
I will always like the old style as I remember since I was a kid & beyond vs the square shoe box look. Last month I found a 1970's toy made by Playskool named Familiar Places McDonald's on ebay which I just had to have. Also I won a bid on a Toys "R" Us truck which was a must have for a long time.
It's funny how it closed recently. You can see the ad for "the rise of skywalker" in there. Another mcdonalds closed it was in downtown on smithfield st. Don't know how long though.
Wow just down a couple of months ago 😮. Good video
I worked there in the 80 s. Plus went to that alter bar.
Great video wallie your the best stay awesome 😃
Great video Wallie. You should visit my hometown of Donora, PA. We have an abandoned McDonald’s that closed YEARS ago! At the time, it was the only McDonald’s IN THE NATION to close due to lack of business 😳 It’s across the street from the post office.
Great video, I just saw this pop up on my instagram feed, looked really cool.
its some of the most valuable land in Pittsburgh right now, not surprising it closed for a higher and better use. Probably will be office space built on the site
8:55 awww shit, I think we’re “the friends”. Thanks for all the videos, Wallie.
1:44 Wow, that McDonald's sign actually looks eerie there.
Hey Wally, I love all of your videos man you're the best. Do you remember the original McDonald's that had the HUGE M going over the building???
A somewhat similar McD's in Houston was converted to a small car dealership some 20 something years ago. These fast food buildings can be converted into use for almost any business.
Why
Nice find, don't think I've ever seen an abandoned McDonald's.
Multiple around my area
@@ZachArmstrong02 why
@@channelfive7883 bad areas I guess a few moved down the street from the old location
Very interesting video. Thanks for posting this. Have a nice day.
The same thing happened to the Wendy’s in Monroeville next to Popeye’s. It’s all boarded up.
Yea I work in Penn Center east and was sort of surprised they closed
malika jones yeah it just shut down out of no where. I wonder what happened.
I delivered from that Wendy's at the start of December and was shocked! By the start of this month, it was gone. But theres one further down 22, one in Plum, one in Murrysville... This one was the worst for service anyway. Lol
louierod23 so true lol. It was the worst. I know of the other ones just was surprised it was closed.
@@kendizzle228 I was in there right before it closed. This is going to sound crazy, but I swear they said they were closing so that Popeyes could have a bigger parking lot.
Back when I was 16 me & my mom used to clean an office in Lawrenceville and we’d stop here for Big Macs afterwards most weeks because this location gave the most special sauce I’ve ever seen. I’ll never forget how amazing every bite was!
Why
They built a McDonald’s in a small town in Greenville Maine. The locals didn’t want it to be there. They boycotted it and it closed. That building sat empty for many years. Now it’s used for kayak rentals and River Tours lol
Interesting story. Why was Greenville so against it? Are they a health-conscious town?
Christian Gonzales Wednesday health-conscious. It is backwards maine. They are definitely into small town businesses not major corporations
Increased traffic of strangers especially if its of a highway, sounds small town.
@@aceflys
It's probably a town full of cringey ugly liberals.
Oh no what a shame this reminds of my childhood
It's cool that you documented this place before it was torn down. I don't know, I really like the hut style. It should have been preserved (if the owner intended to open a restaurant there, of course.)
Weird I only finally found this video, now. Sad to see the old mansard roof locations like this, bite the dust. Those old Ray Kroc plaques, were common at older McDonald's locations. I'm pretty sure the newer McDonald's locations, don't have those plaques anymore. Like probably after the 1980s or early 1990s at the latest, McDonald's stopped putting those inside the buildings of newer McDonald's locations.
When did that happen? That is so random! That one has been there forever!
It must have been within the last two weeks. All the advertising you see inside the store is very recent like the Star Wars Happy Meal display and the advertisement for the BBQ Bacon Burger.
Fast food businesses doesn’t make any profit in downtown Pittsburgh. People rather eat healthy food in Pittsburgh. I heard a article in regards to it. I am surprised Wendy’s is still around in Pittsburgh. Lol
@@JTB128650 that's not really downtown tho, and I don't see how the don't make any money cause every time to the actual downtown McDonald's they are always packed. But I do see how in the strip it could have lost business with amount of other restraunts they are available over there now. But in actual downtown not that many.
Shannon Flaherty I posted information about it. They closed it. The owner is waiting until the lease is up.
@@GrnArrow092 I subbed buddy
It looks like a vintage McDonalds from the 90's. The location in Sharon, PA still looks similar to that location. Haven't been in that location in years.
I like the old style Mcdonald's look 😀
Me too.
I drove past last week and didn't even realize they were closed. Interesting
Your voice and Burgh accent remind me of Dave Dameshek from NFL Network. Lol. Keep up the good work!
Wow, I didn’t even notice they closed this one. They closed the one closer to Smithfield over the summer as well.
I think they closed that one due to criminal activities, also they have two other ones in town that one prob, did not get as much business.
I was waiting for some employee to open up the drive thru and say Hello,Sir. What will you be having? 😂😂😂😂
Omg that look just like my old McDonald’s except my had a red roof sadly they completely changed it into a shoe box I miss it was my childhood McDonald’s I grow up with It thx u so much for showing it oh yeah my color where red and white for my building color
I just googled street viewed this place, it did have a red roof
The McDonald's in Punxsutawney Pa they redone their place this past June before our Groundhog Festival
Hey Wallie I just came across ur channel because of this video I work down there and it’s definitely so strange they closed like that .looking back the last 2 weeks before they closed they started to shut down the drive thru more and more... then I was thinking maybe they were under staffed. Then one day I went and they were closed. now that I think back they definitely knew they were about to close
"I came in like a wrecking ball", Wallie, you should have put the flags at half staff.
LOL, I was about to suggest this one! It just up and closed a couple weeks ago.
I was literally in the Strip last week and didn't even notice. I bet they tear it down since they removed the power.
Wow. I was just there like right before Christmas!!
That's quite interesting they would close down just like that. I wonder if they relocated or if the rent went up. You would think it would do well in business because of the church and other local businesses nearby.
Used to go to that location quite often back in the day -- and would sometimes park in their lot at night when i would go to sanctuary/altar and some of the other bars & clubs. it was one last of the old-style stores in the city
Wow they even gutted the sign! Sad that it's closed.I do like the way it looks on the outside, like the shape of the roof.
There's one in Windsor, VT where I used to work and took last 3 drive through orders. :(
I just drove past this an hour ago. Came home, found this video. :)
A part of me misses the old aesthetic of McDonalds. When I was young living in the Philippines, we would go to McDonalds and it was dark with a lot of browns with the same floor tiles except in the Philippines, it was white sort of "outdoor tiles" [for both stand alone restaurants and as part of mall food courts].
WallieB26 I am now a fan and I have watched a couple of your Kmart vids and now this.
Now that is one cool looking McDonald's!.
That McDonald’s was absolutely filthy.

All fast places are terrible in many ways
As should be closed forever
Not true I live in the country and the fast food places are nice and new in my part of mi it’s just the cities that have bad old rausragjtsb
Jaccob Ernst
Sac you have so much to learn about these places
As there on,y nice to you because they want you to spend money nothing else
An do anything they can to eat there garbage
My dads McDonald’s is old I hate that McDonald’s it’s like the food was never cooked that’s the only trouble I had at a McDonald’s
Jaccob Ernst
Which is another reason should be closed for good
Like you said as the food may look taste good is unhealthy for you
As I wonk there seen it all what goes on behind the scenes
I was just there on 22nd last month bought myself a coffee after shopping!
Awesome video
The McDonalds in Mt. Pleasant on 819 was remodeled as of October last year. They had signage in advance of the remodel stating to visit the New Stanton store while it was being redone. That doesn't look like it's coming back anytime soon.
A few years ago, I'd heard that corporate doesn't want them to have basements anymore. Probably going to be a rebuild, been so many in recent years.
I didnt know Alterbar is a church again; last time I was there was a few years ago to see Buckethead.
Having passed this place every day for work I can safely say this did not surprise me. Imagine a store where none of the employees cared about the quality of service being put out. Sadly a lot of the fast-food places in Pittsburgh are like this. It just wasn't making enough profit to be stable.
Same thing killed a couple places up here in my part of Michigan. Macaroni Grill demolished last week, becoming a Chic Fillet (allready a super busy Miejer store right off I-96 in Cascade Township) and also had a Quaker Steak And Lube that also failed super fast due too poor service. Quaker Steak had problems with food poisoning and didn't even last two years. Already replaced.
I am from Pittsburgh and the two times I was at that one it had really good food some McDonalds in Pittsburgh had burnt food it was also a popular place to hang out at I would always enjoy driving past it a lot of people love that one
Wow that's crazy I was just at that McDonald's the one on Smithfield closed too
Just shooting a video for a few of your friends? You mean all 20,000 of them?
Wow new subscriber I love McDonald’s never thought of looking for abandoned ones I lived in Pittsburgh my whole life and wow I thought that McDonald’s was still open wow in the strip district
Dam I love that one because every time we go to city or Convention center we go there
I didnt even know this even closed...
What's weird is that the flags are still up after it closed, those exit signs could be retrieved to a collector.
Kamin said McDonald’s corporate offices notified him in late fall that the restaurant would close by the end of 2019, even though the lease runs to this summer.
"Kamin said he believed the restaurant had been there for at least 20 years. The company continues to pay rent on the property despite the closure, he said." Kamin is the property owner.
Wow I used to go to this McDonalds all the time, I didn’t even notice💯
That very same mcd's was actually in an illegal tow video a couple yrs ago. Lol I can't remember who it was. Someone right here on RUclips 😂😂
Rip, looks like a vintage McDonald’s too.
it does i been to this one sad its gone now they relocated i think? most likely they did cause of the new logo they had,
@@adamsATSfan415 Could very well be relocation. Two of the McDonald's in my area with this older building style were replaced with new restaurants down the road built in the current style.
I recognize your name, aren't you one of PottiesInPittsburgh's friends?

the amount of times we would have late night meals there after going to an event at the altar bar next door. I miss that place.
A few years ago this one McDonald’s that I liked to go to was torn down. It was rebuilt from ground up. I do missed the old school from the outside of this one that I go to. There is another one just a little bit south was remodeled inside and out.
Watching willie talk about mcdonalds and their commercial pops up
Like this McDonald's look better than the new look they got now cool video
They have been replacing the old style buildings with new ones. It's rare to see a McD close permanently. Odd that the flags haven't been taken down.
That was the place to go before concerts down the street at the Altar Bar. I got to meet Levi and Ryan from Miss May I back in 2015 here. So weird it just up and closed!
It looks a lot like the one we had here in the 80's. Ours is a franchise owned by a local business man. Just about 10 years back corporate sent some suited wienies in and pretty much told the guy his building was too old, and if he wanted to keep the franchise, he had to have a new one constructed.
They literally built the new one right next to the old one. The old one remained in service until they could open the new one. Once the new one opened, the old one was torn down and the area was made into the parking lot for the new one.
Mcdonalds owns the land and this is how they control their franchises. That's how franchisee Roy Croc was able to force the Mcdonalds brothers to sell their 3 locations to him. He strated the franchise reality corporation and bought all of the lands every franchise leased so he could control and make money. Then he bought the Landa of the 3 mcdonalds brothers original locations and forced them to sell
I just wandering..there was nothing mentioned about this MC.Donalds closing in your LOCAL NEWS PAPER?? im kind of surprised it was not mentioned..Usually if a Resturant closes SOMETHING about the closing would be printed in your local NEWS PAPER
Wow. What century are you from? Its a McDonalds. That'd be like them reporting on a starbucks in downtown New York City being shut down. Totes not newsworthy.
Considering it is in the Strip District, the lot may have been sold for development. There is so much development going on down there that maybe a hotel or apartments will be going there.
Unfortunately, I have to agree. So many buildings are being refurbished for lofts, this area is becoming nothing but housing.
Yeah PGH is under heavy reconstruction
@@Nenezilla Yeah but who the fuck is going to move into these new apartments and lofts. Aren't they kinda overkilling it?
for any one wondering who the dude was on the plaque. musta been one of his franchises at one point.
"Raymond Albert "Ray" Kroc (October 5, 1902 - January 14, 1984) was an American fast-food tycoon.[4][5] He joined the California company McDonald's in 1954, after the McDonald brothers had franchised 6 locations out from their original 1940 operation in San Bernardino. This set the stage for national expansion with the help of Kroc, eventually leading to a global franchise"
All them older McDonald's had a plaque like that in them. He was the founder of McDonald's restaurants that's why he is on the plaque
@@dennis4187 Kind of, The McDonald Brothers were the ones who technically started the business but Kroc was the one who eventually bought them out while expanding the locations beyond California.
Actually Ray stole mcdonalds from the brothers and he opened the other 3 franchise locations then bought all the lands so alm owners had to pay his new company franchise reality corporation lease payments for land they were on. Later he named the reality company the McDonald's corporation which upset the McDonald's brothers. This is how he told them either do as I want as a partner or since I own your land I'll push you out. They sold their locations to Rat for 2.7 million and a handshake of 3% roalty of sales. RAay never upheld that agreement as he purposely left that out of the signed agreement for 2.7 million stating the franchise owners wouldn't go for the any royalty.
One McAbandoned to go please lol.
Wow can’t believe it closed!!
I miss that old style of mcdonalds. I have footage of my 2nd birthday in 2001 at mcdonald’s so I can still watch that😂
Omg can I see
So sad as someone who worked at McDonald’s
Holy crap I've never seen a McSkeletor sign LOL!!!!
its weird that the flags are still up
That's what I was thinking. Maybe it's going to be rebuilt.
The flags will probably be gone by tomorrow. I mean, look how quickly they removed the menu boards and the exterior signage
When McDonald’s closes a store they always take anything that has the arches and logos off immediately. They don’t want people to know it was a mceds. They will even change the roof line.
@@jamessuchy6292 They also don't want anybody not related to McDonald's to use the golden arches either. Similarly, in Texas when a Whataburger closes down they always make sure to paint the buildings completely white (they use white and orange colors).
@@jamessuchy6292
Why do they do that?
This was a frequent lunch / dinner break when I was driving for Uber in 2018/19. Always seemed busy even if it was one of their more seedy locations. Weird to see it go.
Lots of abandoned retail around metro Pittsburgh, sadly. Have you peeked in the Market Square McD's since they closed?
I've been there to use the restroom and get a soda during my uber eats/door dashing. Looks like its done done!
I've never seen a McDonald's with a mac machine in it, that being said, it's crazy how it closed, whenever I'm in the Burgh and go to the strip district (which is rare) that was always busy
4:23 WRT Saiger... *MAC machine = Money Access Center. What PNC, formerly PNB (Pittsburgh National Bank), originally called their ATM (Automated Teller Machine) in the 1970’s. Back in the day, you couldn’t turn a corner in south western PA without seeing a blue PNB ATM with their rainbow MAC logo.
I'm surprised they didn't give customers notice saying that they're closing
The rats and roaches knew
I've seen those plaques in McDonald's. I noticed the flags were left up which is surprising.
I love those fluorescent lamps on the roof!
Some older locations still have them, and most of them have been converted to the "shoebox" design. Even the ones in my area were converted to the "shoebox" design.
I don't know what the deal is with these restaurants closing, I've noticed some Wendys have closed up as well.
