I've been following this build religiously, so to speak, because your artistry and instruction has been extraordinary. Proto-modelers fascinate me in the same way that Georges Seurat's pointillism approach to painting shook me when I first learned of it, first hand, at the Art Institute of Chicago when I was just a boy. "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" is a huge painting, although it wasn't crafted in grand strokes, but, basically, one pixel at a time. And yet Seurat knew what the end result would look like, and had the patience to see it through. And this is where you excel for your viewers. You can both demonstrate and communicate your craft (including guy wires!). If Seurat was alive today he would probably have a RUclips channel of his own. And he would likely follow you out of respect and admiration for your talent. He is considered one of the masters, but he only worked in two dimensions. I think your diorama is just as deserving, if not more so, than any painting or sculpture protected by a red velvet rope. A masterpiece by any other name is still just that. BTW, that Zodiac is fkn awesome! Like Reacher says, "details matter."
Thank you for sharing such an eloquent and thought provoking paragraph. You summed up my sentiments and philosophy when I approach this hobby. It's art to me at the beginning and end of the day. I do in fact build and paint one pixel at a time, applying each stroke like a small piece in a larger mosaic. I know what I want, but can't quite explain it other than to put it together piece by piece until my soul resonates with it. This is one of the first works I have done where there was no commision or deadline to finish - and it feels marvelous. David Bowie once said. " If an artist works for commission they will invariably do their worst work. If they work for themselves, only then can they achieve greatness." Subsequently, It's people like you who inspire people to excellence with mere words so eloquently spoken in such a way as to compel an artist to another level of creativity. I had a client who spoke like you, (rest his soul), who inspired me to a level I never thought possible. I hope I can do the same with the content I share. In closing, I have also been persecuted in the past for achieving success in this area but after hearing you, there is not a troll in the world that can rock my boat. ;-) Thank you for taking the time to write your thoughts. Cheers ~ Boomer.
@boomerdiorama This isn't an art, but rather a collection of arts. Some modelers can only build models and have a hard time painting or showcasing their skills. Others can only paint pre made models. In addition to that, most do not have the videography skills to showcase them. You have managed to master all of these You have a wonderful pallet of skills that is most incredible, and I'm sure many of us wish to achieve one day. You have the painting skills of a master which compliments your incredible building skills. All that is greatly presented by your video skills and your philosophical comment on the way you work. The saying “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” doesn't apply to you as you are a master of many arts. Thank you for being an inspiration to all of us.
Amazing ! My father was a docking pilot so I’ve been on some large vessels and tugboats your builds are so realistic. You don’t give the modeling community fish you teach us how to fish .Thank you.
Not only do I enjoy and learn from your modeling skills, but I also enjoy and learn about the psychology of the build and building my skills. Thank you so much and God bless.
Just so impressive, the intricate details. And more, all the structural and functional planning in the ship... all your models actually, but the Princess is particularly impressive. The precise fitment always catches my attention as well. From one detail junkie boomer to another, your passion is clear! Can't wait to see it loaded & lit!
Bravo Man. Exquisitly rendered and detailed to the nines! I have been captivated by your work since I stumbled on your moose sculpture video and have been watching since then. I have been a modle railroad enthusiast most of my life, I have a lay out in N scale for myself and am working on the otherside HO for my Grandchildren at present. Working with the little people in this hobby has so many skills to that can be taught . This hobby never quits giving Lots of life discusions come up with little minds and creativity abounds. Thank you again Boomer. Very Inspiring! You are also correct in that when you think your done, It never is.
Yes indeed. This hobby never quits giving. Glad to hear you are encouraging the little ones. ;-) Furthermore, N Scale is awesome these days as well. Cheers!
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom on this video in particular. Push through and don't forfeit your reward. Man you're awesome! I needed to hear that today!
The Carrier Princess is insane but the detail in the Zodiac just blows my mind! Hard to believe that it isn’t 3D printed - you are the master Boomer. The scratch built small details set you apart from all the rest. Wow
Boomer, amazing details. Thank you for sharing with us. In my old Project Management days we used to have an 80 / 20 rule, 80 % of the project is done in 20 % of the time, but the last 20 % can take 80 % of the time, and close to 100 % it takes longer for the last little bits. You have certainly gone the extra mile to get those details, and wow, they are amazing. I am following with great interest. Cheers, and stay safe, Michael
I am actually quite relieved I never bothered to build the full ship. I don't need it anyway and it won't fit as well. Ships are cool models to build but they take up a ton of space and time. Cheers.
Sage advise regarding the last 5% of the model. It's the key details that finish off the model. If key details are missing, just about anyone who looks at the model will sense that it's incomplete even if they couldn't tell you why. Again, thanks for sharing your talent. Don.
At 5:36 "Fairly please with this build so far", I nearly spewed my drink all over the monitor! The Carrier Princess build is nothing short of artistic genius, any museum would be glad to have it; outstanding update Boomer, as always! Your wisdom and sharing of your knowledge and techniques is making its rounds around the web, I'm hearing you referenced often. - Liquitex Matte Medium for all things scenery and ballast: Check - Making a spreadsheet of all Tamiya paints and highlighting what I have vs what I still need to get as read/heard about it on MRR forums and YT, acquiring some of them up front: Check - Acquiring new hobby tools based on my recently gleaned knowledge: Check - Explaining to wife my sudden and dramatic expenditure increase on my hobby and my reply being ‘I’m trying to become like Boomer who is molding and inspiring us to become better artists’: PRICELESS :)
Lol . . . my wife says, "I'm married to the guy eh . . . . I know about dramatic expenditures" . . . lol. Especially lately, with the new locomotive releases from Rapido and Athearn Genesis. ;-)
Boomer, your incredible artistic / modeling capabilities are at the extreme end of the Bell Curve, but please keep these videos coming as they are so incredibly inspirational. And my hope is that someday, when you begin another HO layout project, that this River Railroad of yours will end up in a prominent Canadian museum.
Dear Boomer, building models to the last 5% is like building your own house to that last five and keep postponing the finishing, because you know after you’ve finished there’s a change coming! Love it, love the series, love the build, love the tips. Yep, sag. Wonderful to see how you use it with the ship’s hull, and how to avoid it with the large upper sections. Awesome and beautiful. Hats off! Cheerio
Wow, incredible model and insightful, inspirational words. Thanks Boomer. I suffer from analysis paralysis sometimes near the end of a model so I understand what you mean. Great advice. Your model is so inspirational as well. That Zodiac alone is a complete model in it's own right. What a dramatic element to include. Thanks so much for sharing
That ferry is looking awesome. I love the roof with weathered paint. The details are amazing. This will definitely be the center piece to the layout with all that lighting. Even if you have been modeling for all those years, you should be proud of yourself with this build.
The addition of the “Princess” was an unexpected surprise for me, I’ve followed the progress of “River road” and thought you were finished with the first section. You open up so many possibilities for operations linking your layout to the world. Beautiful work.
The Ferry was in the plan from the beginning. The reason why I never built it first was because I needed a tangible context to look at, and inspire the long build. Following this, I still have details on section yet to go . . . ;-)
I spend all week looking forward to sharing my Sunday morning coffee with Boomer. Especially loving the ferry build. I modelled the William Carson ferry on my HON3.5 Newfoundland Railway layout a few years back and it’s great to see everything I should have done differently. East coast, and west coast, there’s no shortage of great Canadian prototypes begging to be modelled! Sorry if this comment has showed up a couple times. It looks like my previous attempts didn’t work.
As usual amazing. Your attention to all the details floors me but also the fact that you seem to know what they are for AND the names of those details as well. When you say research your subject you are not kidding. Enjoying picking gems as you go and demonstrate as always. What a channel!
Thanks Boomer. Especially for the encouragement. I'm struggling with my first boxcar superdetail and this helped! Great to hear I'm not the only one breaking parts....
It happens all the time. I think it's just something we learn to accept eventually. I mean we deal with micro details and parts all the time with our big fumbling hands. '-)
Ahoy and thanks Boomer. It been a treat watching and listening as you build the ferry. While I have no need or interest in building a ferry I am picking up IMO valuable tips for any model building. That I very much appreciate and demonstrates to me how wonderful it is that you are giving back to the modeling community. Your production quality and thoughts (philosophy) on your builds makes your channel stand out above others.
You have inspired my next scratch build. An Erie tugboat. Overland did 1 in brass for $1500. I have drawings so I’m have way there. Thanks for the inspiration!!
Your modeling is almost out of this world, just beautiful. I really appreciate your explaining not only what you do, but why you model something a particular way. Looking forward to the next installment on this build! Bill B.
The content of this build is quite extensive. I have not touched the layout all summer due to the time commitment on this build. The challenge is trying to show it chronologically, which is actually impossible to do due to the insane time to build and produce. It's a nightmare at times. 😁
Awesome attention to the details of the build. On completion of a build of this magnitude, I have a let down. I make sure to have plans started for the next project. Great work!
Dang dude those parts look great. Your work is definitely an inspiration to us scratch builders. I started scratch building component parts for a 1/87 truck 18 years ago. Lol I finally moved it back to the front of the bench about a month ago and completed it today. Your videos i think had a little to do with it. 🤘
Finishing your 1/87 Truck build must feel good. I am also working on a 1/87 Kenworth Cab Over (on the side) from S&M Models. It's a stunning 3D print. They sell them at InterCity Trains & Hobbies. ;-)

I've enjoyed the examples of sub assemblies and the showcase of techniques in these last two videos. Getting over the hump of the project is to me the hard part but breaking the job down reduces that feeling of one's plate being too full. Your perspective is one of a professional approach but you explain it so the casual hobbyist can apply that discipline to their own projects. There's lots in the ferry series to apply to other models too. My notebook is full Brother , both the actual and the one in my tiny brain. Great work and presentation as usual! Love my Sunday coffee with a Boomer Dioramas video!

Yes. Remember Tamiya XF Acrylic Flat is a type of primer paint. Furthermore, when painting white-on-white, it is easy to mess up because there is no contrast to guage the coverage during application. White is even worse when you clear coat it because you can't see the coverage so runs can be a nightmare that only show on certain angles. White primer can hide stuff this way.

Yes. Remember Tamiya XF Acrylic Flat is a type of primer paint. Furthermore, when painting white-on-white, it is easy to mess up because there is no contrast to guage the coverage during application.
