To give you some background to those dying towns. I'm from a small city in South Carolina as well. Back in the early 90s, those places were booming. But when the US opened up trading to china, a lot of manufacturing jobs up and left for cheaper labor. My mother was released from her manufacturing job around the time she was about to purchase another home. The name of this company is Blumenthal Mills. This was a company that was a part of the textile industry. The company literally kept our town profitable. My mother and sister worked there and made a really nice income. However, once they started to cut back, the city started to crumble around us. It happened so fast. Our chrismas was no longer the same. Less toys and gadgets sat under the tree, a tree that was quite lower quality vs what we used to get(a live tree). My mother was trapped into a home that started to fall apart. We lived in mold for years because my mother didn't have her same income she once had. She bounced around from job to job as they all started to close their doors. Opportunity for regular people was starting to look pretty bad. We as a family learned how to adjust our expectations as the city continue to crumble at accelerated rates. Now, when I go back to visit my mother, homeless people became more noticeable. It's truly sad to see my hometown fall apart.
I'm torn. It's fascinating to see these old buildings and imagine how they were in their heyday but so sad they have been left empty and time has moved on. Great video.
I've lived in Chester county all my life and worked in Chester for 20 years from 1978 until 1998. I remember when the mini-series, "Chiefs" was filmed there in 1983, with Charlton Heston and may other well known stars. I was an extra in the mini-series and Mr. Heston was very cordial when I met him.

I live in Chester. It has gotten much better over the past several years. New businesses moved into downtown and it has been brought back to life. Chester is also a film location for the movie The Patriot with Mel Gibson and is the hometown of Felicia Rashaad of Bill Cosby Show fame.

Empty towns - but the taxes never go down and the prices of real estate never stop going up. It's almost like somebody, somewhere, doesn't want us living in small towns.
I appreciate your post and fully agree. Something systemic exists alright in US politics and this systemic problem is actually observable and measurable, one small town at a time. We need revival of small town life.

I met charles kuralt at a little restaurant in the mountains of north Carolina many years ago....he was just eating and reading a newspaper. I asked him if he was Charles kuralt, he said all day every day. He asked me to join him..we talked a while. He was staying in a mountain cabin owned by hugh morton and writing one of his books . Really nice man...

From the Great Falls website concerning the beautiful building that was a Belk department store: "The Old Company Store The Republic Mills Company Store where you could get a sugar coffee blankets and when necessary a coffin. The next long-term occupant was the Department Store, Belk's. Today, the Company Store site sits directly across from Townhall." Some mills would pay in currency that could only be used in their stores or for rent that was only for houses owned by the mill. So, you could never really get ahead. I read farther down in the comments that there are great plans to revitalize the downtown area. Love Brattonsville!! Have been there with the children. If you have the time, explore the entire area. Thanks for the videos.
If you ever go back to Chester, you should check out the Lando School House. It’s an old school house that was abandoned in the 1950’s. People don’t mind you going in there so you don’t have to worry about trespassing. They even have a museum in town.
The mural on the side of the old Deluxe Pools building is actually my husband’s family. They created different scenes, but the people painted in the mural are their family members. His grandfather used to own Deluxe Pools.

Though God is good, I surely miss those days as we were kinder to each other and managed life with our families and really loved this country, black white, etc.... what a great country we have and seeing these small towns allows all of us, to see the beauty of our past. The antique green vehicle I believe is a Jeep. Almost 50 years ago when I lived in Montana, a friend owned this exact Jeep, winch and all. One very wintery evening a bunch of us piled into the Jeep and drove about 56 miles to a rock concert. We saw Paul Butterfield and Dr. John the Night Tripper. What a fun time. Traveling back home was a bit scary because the weather had gotten worse but we knew the old Jeep would make it and it did.
Absolutely love seeing the old towns and the relics of the backroads. So cool to see this video. We drove thru some cool towns on a part of route 66 in Illinois this past summer. Thanks again Adam for the cool video Steve and Sandee
Cool that you can pay an admission and see some spots used in The Patriot. Very entertaining film. Extreme drama and action with a hint of good humor. I enjoy it greatly. You did a really cool boat ride that had some swamp area locations from The Patriot. I still want to do that.
I lived in Chester from 1973-75, 160 Pinkney Street. Went to 3rd & 4th grade there. We lived in Rock Hill the 1st half or so of 1973. My Daddy worked at Sun Chemical.
Route 9 in SC is me and my wife's favorite drive. So mant towns and diners. Lancaster, Pageland, Chesterfield and Cheraw are great visits. I like to spot the old gas station. The Flopeye Diner in Great Falls is my favorite diner, hands down!
That amazing little 4 wheel drive wagon you loved is a Willys Jeep Station Wagon. They were built from 1946-1964. Based on the JEEP platform that won the war. Also imortialized by the Grateful Dead in the song "Sugar Magnolia". While they are awesome, I'd love to watch Adam fold himself inside one and drive it. They're tiny inside! People were smaller in the 1940's I assume. I've always loved those things. OH - and Willys is not pronounced like Willy's - It's like Arnolds brother in Different Strokes - "Whatchu talkin' 'bout Willis?"

A lot of my people are from Great Falls. It died with I-77 and the JP Stevens Mill closing. Great Falls was actually still pretty nice throughout the 90s but as more of my grandparent's generation died, the town just went downhill. The new whitewater center might bring back some business to the area. But it's crazy how dead it is there.

Hey Adam, both towns you were in were also filming locations, Chester was used in the filming of chiefs and Robert Kirkmans t.v show outcast, Great Falls was the filming location for a movie called Walker Payne, Gramps which starred John Ritter and Andy Griffith, and Outcast was also filmed in Great Falls, Remember when we did the Springs Park Video together, well Great Falls is my hometown and you wasn't far from the park.
I live in the middle of SC, driving through the state to get to the coast or anywhere is very depressing. Small towns with no money and the citizens sit on the front porches of their mobile homes and watch the cars on the highway go by all day.
I grew up in Great Falls, spent the first 30 years of life living there. The old Belks department store, was 3 floors, the first floor and basement were the Belks store while the third floor was the Masonic Lodge. I remember going in that store with my mother for her to buy sewing stuff. Also if you ever go back you should check out the Waterfall. Yes There is a Waterfall in Great falls. It's hidden, and not a bunch of people know about it. Also there is a very old church, one of the all in one room type of churches, again kinda hidden but its there on the outskirts, Cemetery goes back to before the Civil war. One more thing, Downtown Great Falls is not called Downtown its called Flopeye. THANK YOU Adam the Woo!

At 1:58 you speculate about a mural depicting an arch like stone formation rising out of the water in a sea side location. In fact there is a formation exactly like that in Entretat, France (a place I visited years ago). It was even the subject of a painting by one of the famous French Impressionist artists.
Great video. Always liked Vloggers going to these small towns that are pretty much abandoned or close to it. A boss I had from 2004 to 2014 was from a small town in SC called Windsboro. Will probably search around to see if any Vloggers have visited.
Oh my goodness, you went to my town in Chester. I rarely go there because I live near county line of Chester and York county. We shop in big town Rock Hill. I’ve never got out and walked the streets even though I’ve lived here 20 years now. We live out in the country. Thank you for this video because I didn’t know all that was there. This makes me want to go walk around there now. We’ve only been to the white Courthouse and a lawyers office. They both are old looking inside too. There was a old coin phone outside near where you was at. It was near top of hill. They did make a youth video in Chester called The Ghost Club. I watched it. We’ve been to Brattonsville too. They have war reenactment there and have demonstrations days
You need to check out Fountain Inn South Carolina main street is maybe a quarter mile and its a very busy town during the week and young folks come at night for food and drinks and entertainment and the weekend has mixture of entertainment and shopping and there is the historic town of 96 that is trying to stay viable along with STAR FORT just outside of town along with the Greenwood State Park 10 miles away, maybe a spring road trip. The "Upstate" is surrounded by nostalgic Old Towns that are trying to survive in the new generation that holds ole'folk lore and hidden gems.
You need to see Fair Bluff,NC in your travels. The town was struck with a 100 year flood in 2016 from Hurricane Matthew and another flood in 201i8 from Hurricane Florence. After the 2016 floods the store fronts on the main drag stood empty. The water line could be seen on the windows of the businesses I would guess four feet high. All the stock at the local hardware store was left in place and mold could be seen growing on the walls. Once the 2018 flooding struck it largely became a ghost town. The town sits on the Lumber River and you can still walk the Riverwalk. It winds through the woods down to the river.
Wow, MOMO donuts is in Rock Hill about 5 miles from my current house, also lived in Great Falls for about 10 years not far from the old Belks store. Cool to see my stomping ground on youtube
I hate these guys didn't come about a year ago. They would see major improvements since then. Most of the dilapidated buildings they showed have been recently purchased and soon to be renovated. The Belks building will soon become the Welcome Center. We'll have a primitive campground on the island, and much more with the rapids coming. We're working on getting Pickle Ball courts. Torrey Craig recently blessed Great Falls with an amazing renovation to our downtown basketball courts.. The thread trail that lines the waters edge is absolutely beautiful. While we realize we have work to do I hate they failed to show all the beautiful buildings and businesses that are operating. Wished that they would have reached out to the Mayors of these towns so that the information they shared would have been more accurate. I love Great Falls and the people in it. Great Falls we are not forgotten!! We have a light that shines bright and I hope these guys come back and check in to see all the exciting things coming our way.
I failed to mention Adventure World! We have had the honor of attending many concerts with new performers and some legendary ones. They also host different events with their stretch of land you can truly get lost in on your ATVs. They also offer camping and cabins!
Fun fact: I did security on a few different filming locations for the movie The Patriot.. Was definitely cool watching them build a "rustic" village in the middle of nowhere, only to see it burn down.. And you were literally right down the road from me.. Have a great day Adam..

I lived in Chester from 1973-75, 160 Pinkney Street. Went to 3rd & 4th grade there. We lived in Rock Hill the 1st half or so of 1973. My Daddy worked at Sun Chemical.

Route 9 in SC is me and my wife's favorite drive. So mant towns and diners. Lancaster, Pageland, Chesterfield and Cheraw are great visits. I like to spot the old gas station.
The Flopeye Diner in Great Falls is my favorite diner, hands down!
That amazing little 4 wheel drive wagon you loved is a Willys Jeep Station Wagon.
They were built from 1946-1964. Based on the JEEP platform that won the war. Also imortialized by the Grateful Dead in the song "Sugar Magnolia". While they are awesome, I'd love to watch Adam fold himself inside one and drive it. They're tiny inside! People were smaller in the 1940's I assume. I've always loved those things. OH - and Willys is not pronounced like Willy's - It's like Arnolds brother in Different Strokes - "Whatchu talkin' 'bout Willis?"

That felt like a film set, very eerie, well kept buildings, next to totally abandoned ones, as you left the man on the grass cutter just felt odd, plus the ringing of the bell, also the look of disgust on that Rams face 😳, none the less, really enjoyed watching the vlog Adam, looking forward next one

With so many having the option of working from home these small towns could be revitalized easy.
@@DeanDewnuffun People who work from home need access to high speed internet. Most of these old towns do not have it. Believe it or not dial up AOL still exists in some remote area's of the country.
@@perceivedvelocity9914 we could start with resettlement in small towns with access. That could be the first venture: delivery of wireless to the hollar (where I'm proud to say I grew up. I'm aware of no service in the hills)
Alot of those old buildings now have apartments on top of them in Chester.

I love these videos of the small towns, but they also sadden me. I was raised in a small town back when they were vital, active communities. All the stores open and bustling and their owner's prospering. Good times...

A lot of my people are from Great Falls. It died with I-77 and the JP Stevens Mill closing. Great Falls was actually still pretty nice throughout the 90s but as more of my grandparent's generation died, the town just went downhill. The new whitewater center might bring back some business to the area. But it's crazy how dead it is there.

My grandfathers home town Chester SC (Neely Welch) is his name never got to meet him heard he was a tremendous man. Drove through Chester in July will stop in town next summer!

Hey Adam, both towns you were in were also filming locations, Chester was used in the filming of chiefs and Robert Kirkmans t.v show outcast, Great Falls was the filming location for a movie called Walker Payne, Gramps which starred John Ritter and Andy Griffith, and Outcast was also filmed in Great Falls, Remember when we did the Springs Park Video together, well Great Falls is my hometown and you wasn't far from the park.
I enjoyed the video. A great adventure in exploration and curiosity. After 10 mins though I got a little sad when reality set in.
I live in the middle of SC, driving through the state to get to the coast or anywhere is very depressing. Small towns with no money and the citizens sit on the front porches of their mobile homes and watch the cars on the highway go by all day.

I grew up in Great Falls, spent the first 30 years of life living there. The old Belks department store, was 3 floors, the first floor and basement were the Belks store while the third floor was the Masonic Lodge. I remember going in that store with my mother for her to buy sewing stuff. Also if you ever go back you should check out the Waterfall. Yes There is a Waterfall in Great falls. It's hidden, and not a bunch of people know about it. Also there is a very old church, one of the all in one room type of churches, again kinda hidden but its there on the outskirts, Cemetery goes back to before the Civil war. One more thing, Downtown Great Falls is not called Downtown its called Flopeye. THANK YOU Adam the Woo!

I liked seeing the murals. This was nice seeing the house used in Patriot. Pinky's looked very inviting. Nice atmosphere. It was nice to meet your friend.
At 1:58 you speculate about a mural depicting an arch like stone formation rising out of the water in a sea side location. In fact there is a formation exactly like that in Entretat, France (a place I visited years ago). It was even the subject of a painting by one of the famous French Impressionist artists.

Great video. Always liked Vloggers going to these small towns that are pretty much abandoned or close to it. A boss I had from 2004 to 2014 was from a small town in SC called Windsboro. Will probably search around to see if any Vloggers have visited.

Oh my goodness, you went to my town in Chester. I rarely go there because I live near county line of Chester and York county. We shop in big town Rock Hill. I’ve never got out and walked the streets even though I’ve lived here 20 years now. We live out in the country. Thank you for this video because I didn’t know all that was there. This makes me want to go walk around there now. We’ve only been to the white Courthouse and a lawyers office. They both are old looking inside too. There was a old coin phone outside near where you was at. It was near top of hill. They did make a youth video in Chester called The Ghost Club. I watched it. We’ve been to Brattonsville too. They have war reenactment there and have demonstrations days
You need to check out Fountain Inn South Carolina main street is maybe a quarter mile and its a very busy town during the week and young folks come at night for food and drinks and entertainment and the weekend has mixture of entertainment and shopping and there is the historic town of 96 that is trying to stay viable along with STAR FORT just outside of town along with the Greenwood State Park 10 miles away, maybe a spring road trip. The "Upstate" is surrounded by nostalgic Old Towns that are trying to survive in the new generation that holds ole'folk lore and hidden gems.
Fountain Inn is benefiting from Greenville overflow. Laurens is another old quiet town.
You need to see Fair Bluff,NC in your travels. The town was struck with a 100 year flood in 2016 from Hurricane Matthew and another flood in 201i8 from Hurricane Florence.
After the 2016 floods the store fronts on the main drag stood empty. The water line could be seen on the windows of the businesses I would guess four feet high. All the stock at the local hardware store was left in place and mold could be seen growing on the walls.
Once the 2018 flooding struck it largely became a ghost town. The town sits on the Lumber River and you can still walk the Riverwalk. It winds through the woods down to the river.

Wow, MOMO donuts is in Rock Hill about 5 miles from my current house, also lived in Great Falls for about 10 years not far from the old Belks store. Cool to see my stomping ground on youtube
I hate these guys didn't come about a year ago. They would see major improvements since then. Most of the dilapidated buildings they showed have been recently purchased and soon to be renovated. The Belks building will soon become the Welcome Center. We'll have a primitive campground on the island, and much more with the rapids coming. We're working on getting Pickle Ball courts. Torrey Craig recently blessed Great Falls with an amazing renovation to our downtown basketball courts.. The thread trail that lines the waters edge is absolutely beautiful. While we realize we have work to do I hate they failed to show all the beautiful buildings and businesses that are operating. Wished that they would have reached out to the Mayors of these towns so that the information they shared would have been more accurate. I love Great Falls and the people in it. Great Falls we are not forgotten!! We have a light that shines bright and I hope these guys come back and check in to see all the exciting things coming our way.
I failed to mention Adventure World! We have had the honor of attending many concerts with new performers and some legendary ones. They also host different events with their stretch of land you can truly get lost in on your ATVs. They also offer camping and cabins!

Was definitely cool watching them build a "rustic" village in the middle of nowhere, only to see it burn down..

I grew up in chester 83-97. But all those murals were all there when I lived there. Im 40yrs old. Was a cool place to grow up if you didnt know any better lol.
