I must say tho - love that you’re doing this, but I do think that it’s important to remember that your iPhone isn’t your black magic. I do think your black magic footage looked better, but I think that’s because your setup suits the black magic more. If you somehow tailored your lighting, angles etc, the iPhone could look just as good

I think the iPhone 15 Pro is going to be just fine for your main camera, but I do think you need to tweak your lighting a bit, this main shot here is far too blue. Probably just too much blue LED but maybe the auto white balance was trending too cool. Are you going to use a pro app like Filmic Pro or just stock camera app?

I noticed people mentioning that the quality is a downgrade and suggest changing the setup to improve things like maybe lighting etc. But I actually noticed this in the Apple event, I just thought it was RUclips playing around with a new codec for live streams after double checking the selected resolution on the stream. My second thought was that it was at night this time so that might be why. So considering that, I don't think there is much you can do to significantly improve things. People like me who noticed just got overshadowed by everyone excited about not noticing because their attention was more on the products, probably just assumed live streaming quality and dismissed the shortcomings subconsciously.

I wouldn’t say that getting the 15 Pro and doing all the things you’ve done the past is being hypocritical. Your overall message is to just the most out of the tech you have and get rid of any excess devices that you can live without. Selling/trading your camera and iPhone 11 to get a 15 Pro fits into that philosophy rather well, and tbh, it’s a move that I feel like is the best balance of getting the best of the best in tech and being very frugal. It’s what you described in the video which is essentialism and that’s a philosophy that I’ve been trying to apply to my life and work flow.

Hi Drew, i personally think you should go with the iPhone 15 Pro. I think that the transfer speed is really important. It get's your footage faster in to Final Cut Pro and that means you be saving time! Which is the whole point after all! There are some nice extras as well. And even though you don't care about them too much. You never know what you might do in the future in terms of maybe having a new use case with the Macro lens etc... It will also be a good way to "future proof" yourself and having your 15 Pro for the next couple of years. Of course, that's just my opinion. I have an iPhone X and i'm going to upgrade to the 15 Pro myself as well.

I know you said don’t upgrade just for features, but sometimes features do make things a lot easier. I’m torn on upgrading simply for the satellite feature that comes on newer iPhones (t mobile sucks around here.) The image quality seems significantly downgraded compared to Blackmagic's vibrant colors and clarity. Indoor and outdoor shooting differ, especially with smaller sensors. I believe the Apple event utilized a million-dollar professional lighting setup; recording it with a Nokia phone would yield incredible results. However, the current clarity doesn't match previous standards. Investing $900 every 2-3 years is acceptable, and preserving the Blackmagic might be worthwhile. Image quality holds importance for audience enjoyment.

The tone in your videos are much more cold looking now with the iPhone camera 🙈

Feedback - Selling the black magic to cover the costs definitely avoids you from looking like a hypocrite lol. How to afford these luxuries is what you promote to your viewers. BUT I’m not sure if selling the black magic to use an iPhone camera was the right move because ‘sometimes’ we do notice when you use a smartphone to film your videos, but now we’ll always see ‘that’ and I’m not sure if that’s the move, even if/though your content is heavily based on your personality and information.

I find iPhone is great for outdoor shots but when I step into a studio it acts like it was outside, and requires special lighting.

I really don’t think this makes you a hypocrite. I think it really shows you putting your money where your mouth is. You “downgraded” in most people’s eyes to show that you don’t need an expensive dedicated camera to put out great content. Keep it up.
