As an artist and person who journals, I used to have a container that I put all of my dead pens and pencils in. At the end of every 6 months, I count how many of each one was there. Tracking my progress and growth. In my mind, no matter what I drew or wrote, not a drop of ink or a piece of lead was wasted

I freaking love pens. So much. Ballpoints, gels, rollerballs, fountain - all of them.
I've recently been keeping somewhat of a commonplace book and writing down EVERYTHING in the same book. The book has no destination and no point. It's just a capsule of what I was thinking about a certain day and time, what topic I was researching, etc. I was able to build a journaling habit when I stopped focusing on calling it "journaling" and just wrote anything and everything. I think when I stopped holding myself to a certain standard of what a journal should be instead of what a journal can be, the door went from cracked to wide open.
Back to pens - I was and I suppose still am big on fountain pens. But, after I started journaling more and more I got back into the old ballpoint. A Rotring 600 with Schmidt Easy Flow 9000 refills to be exact. At it's core, the pen is nothing more than transferring the idea to paper, like you say. It's a tool. The writing experience can definitely be enhanced by a smoother pen (the S Gel is a fantastic one for this. They probably won't stop making refills for them or the disposables any time soon.) When you find a favorite pen, it's like the connection just grows. This is MY pen. This is MY notebook. It becomes so much more personal.
The pen is intentional. And even with intention we make mistakes. There's not really a better representation of that then accidentally spelling a word incorrectly or writing the wrong word altogether.
    Great series, great video.

Fantastic vid, but as a pencil user feel I need to defend the graphite a bit. You make a great point about the value of learning from your mistakes, but you can always not erase a pencil mark, in fact I never do, unless it is needed (forms etc). Moreover erasing can alow you to repeat an action and learn from your efforts to improve without wasting extra space. Everything you’ve said about Pens as an analog writing tool I get behind, but a pencil allows expression through line variation, versatility in writing and drawing, and is a much more permanent method to me. Unlike inks it wont bleed when my notebook invariably gets exposed to rain, and the “lead” primarily graphite, carbon, the most stable form of carbon. As a lefty it also smears and stains the hands less. I am however biased for many other reasons, and use a metal 2mm mechanical pencil and wouldn’t argue as strongly for cheap wood pencils or thin leaded mechanical pencils.

You make a great point for the case of the pencil as well! My intention definitely wasn't to argue one over the other, but more to share my perspective and a story to back it up. I love that you and others have elaborated so much on it. It shows me that my video has influenced or made you think. That's awesome to me, so thank you for that!😁
(Also, having a background in drawing, I TOTALLY agree that you can't beat a pencil when it comes to line variation!)

I have an important question for anyone who cares to consider this and explain their thoughts...
EDIT- After exploring your video catalogue, I see you answered this question in the video titled "You need a pocket notebook. Here's why" (I hope I got that title correct. I'm going from memory here! 😏)
I've journaled my whole life. My writing voice has changed throughout my life, as one might expect. I've always used the A5 size thanks to the space inherent with those dimensions. Small enough to carry even though there have been times the size is a wee burden, and big enough to write in. What exactly is so appealing with writing in such a small notebook? I have thoughts, but I don't want to share them yet. I'd like to hear authentic responses to this question.
Btw, your deep dive into the reasons you like writing with this particular pen is deeply satisfying to witness. You don't just talk about the pen itself, but you link it to your ideas and how those ideas travel from your synapses to your fingers holding said pen and getting those thoughts on paper. 7:10 How many wonderful ideas are last to humanity because summertime erased it and then the fragment frayed and disappeared because all evidence of its existence was scratched out. Maybe I'm seeing one reason the field notebook size is popular because it's small enough to literally carry around with you and not be a burden. 👍
    Thank you!

Fountain pens for life. Pen, ink, paper, so much to choose, so much to try, I use them to write, doodle, to add detail to watercolour sketching, everything. And they make me want to write. Different nibs, different inks, different styles, tiny capital print, big expressive cursive, they can do it all. And if you get in the habit of refilling every few days, you will never run out of ink while shooting a video 😅❤

      @marctestarossa 2 месяца назад

@ it can be very expensive and there are many people with a lot of disposable income in this hobby. But it doesnt have to be. It can be very cheap as well. There are fantastic fountain pens that are well accepted in the community like the Lamy Safari. Here in Germany it’s between 15 and 20 € and it’s so well built that it can last the rest of your life. Then you need a cartridge converter so that you can use bottled ink and youre good to go. I still have the fountain pen that i got in 4th grade and it still works.
I got back into fountain pens many years ago, because I struggle with carpal tunnel. I cant write even one a5 sized page with a ballpoint. With my Lamy studio i write many pages a day without problems, because you need absolutely no pressure to write. ♥️

One thing I find ironic is that the impermanent method is often used pursue a impermanent perfection. I'm sure there's some philosophical musings surrounding that idea, but also practically, if the mistakes can be removed so can the successes. I've had EDC notebooks with important things I wanted to remember (written in pencil) and found out the hard way that pencil marks can smudge beyond comprehension over years of daily carry. If it's worth writing down, it's probably worth preserving.

I know pen preferences are really personal, but my favourite notebook pens are either the Pentel Energel 0.7mm or the Papermate Inkjoy gel (also 0.7mm). I did try a Sharpie S-gel, but found it ran out too fast for me and was a bit more scratchy and prone to ink skipping.
Both the Energel and the Inkjoy have my holy trinity of pen characteristics: really saturated, bold black ink; super smooth writing experience where the pen just glides over the paper like a dream, and extra quick drying so I don't end up smearing the ink or getting it all over the side of my hand when I write on coated papers (hi! fellow leftie here!)
