I have a 32 year old Trabant and it is a pile of dog shit but I fucking love it. I drive it almost daily around London and I get so many comments (mostly positive) from people asking about what it is or themselves, their parents and grandparents owned one behind the iron curtain. It brings me so much joy and I’ve never loved any car as much as it. I’m moving to Australia from the UK next year and the car is coming with us no matter what.

And you said you never had the best. You had a FD LTD! But on a serious note, I've been there, I've had the upper side of town houses, cars, job but it was empty. There was always the image, the dress code. I've changed my life, I drive cars like you do and I live in a house that constantly needs repairing. But I now have character in life. My cars have it, my house has it, and my job has it. I still have a couple of cars that I would like that are high up in the price range but they aren't Lamborghini's or Ferraris.
People lose the foresight of living within their means and enjoy what you can afford. People want to 'keep up with the Jones' but they lose their self worth and dignity.
Keep going on your path Sean, it might be dark every now and then, just shine a little light on it. I found cars as a path to keep on whilst other things went on in life and I'm more of me because of it.

“We’re all running our own race”- words I’ve learned to live by, after trying forever to life life on the top shelf. I’m an Everyman, I drive cars of the everyman and I’m bloody proud of it.
When I go through my channel subs list, they’re all of guys playing around with nugget cars and finding happiness and enjoyment in them. These ponces posting videos of picking what colour and options their next Lambo or Ferrari is going to have bores the shit out of me. And strangely enough when the RUclips play buttons start turning up, my attention starts turning to someone else. There’s something about the little guy with their camera and the simplicity of it all. Maybe because I can relate better, who knows.

As I got older and I had a little bit of exposure to these halo cars I was very disappointed to discover that they are actually not that great. My interest was always fueled by the precision of the engineering and the racing history. Sure they are super fast and they look unbelievably cool but for most part they are frustratingly unreliable, low quality, attract the kind of attention you don't want, and stupidly expensive. There's a couple of cars I still wish for but for the most part I've been very disappointed once I got a look behind the curtain. And don't get me wrong I love cars.

Dash cams like you I was much the same 30s very late to license got my first car a Fairmont Ghia it has power when I need it cruises great. Drive brothers honda if I want a manual to drive but love my car im adding things to it bringing it all up to date. Cuz when you need to depend on a car the fairmont just keeps going. I drove my dads Aurion as well and it was my second car I wanted to save up and buy front wheel drive sedan and the rear wheel drive Fairmont love experiences and I try to pick up the luxury models that just need a simple update but the au was what started it all. Was really lucky getting one that wasn't thrashed.

I own a 2004 Fairmont Ghia and I love it the best, nothing flash or expensive but I feel great driving the old girl. I want to maintain it and keep it forever, especially since they stopped making these magnificent old machines.

  • @davidshepherd265
    @davidshepherd265 2 года назад +4

You're bang on. To be honest, I've test driven a lot of new cars over the past 2 years, even some rather expensive cars, and for the most part, none of them really stacked up to my VX Berlina, VN Calais, '92 Mazda MX-6 or '94 Mazda 626 when it comes to putting a smile on my dial. I've been told by many people that I need to get rid of all these old cars and stop wasting my time and money on them and get a nice new car (which would result in me owning a car I don't like, and being in debt for it!). Just like how your dream car was the Fairlane, mine was the VN. I first saw one when I was about 4 years old, when they were the current model, and I remember being completely blown away. I knew it was a Commodore, just like my grandfather's VL which I adored, but this was something different, something new. And something really cool. I wanted one ever since, and at 34 I finally got one. And I will be honest, I did shed a tear as I got onto the M2 and put my foot down on the trip home after buying it. Some people think I have weird hobbies - cars and vintage tech....but these are the things that keep me sane. And with all the things that are going on in the world today, I think having hobbies, having something you can do that you enjoy that gets your mind busy is important. Even if you never become a famous RUclipsr or influencer or whatever, you'll continue to get my views, clicks and likes for a long time to come.

I absolutely adore my 2003 Ford BA Fairmont Ghia. Being a P-Plater in Vic, mods aren't really an option for me, but I do appreciate the car for what it is and would like to keep it as authenic as possible, at least for the time being anyway.
That said, I do tend to spend a lot of my time and money on detailing my vehicle, and trying out various products from the auto store. I just like to be able to cruise around town in a nice-looking vehicle, whilst a sedan almost as old as me typically would not considered cool or attractive by my peers, for me, simply having a reliable, neat and tidy vehicle that I personally put the time and effort in to is something I enjoy for the process itself, and can usually be proud of with the end results. Probably the only thing I can truthfully say I enjoy cleaning, lol.
Perhaps it's just because the Ghia is my first car that I put so much of myself into detailing and maintaining it, but honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. I only hope that as I grow older I still keep that same level of respect for my vehicles, whatever they may be.

Love the video Sean... honestly feel as though I can relate whole heartedly... if it wasn't for cars... I probably wouldn't be here right now... and I know that's a horrible thing to think about... but honestly I don't know what I'd have done, had I not decided to explore my passion of wrenching on cars

  • @tally5k339
    @tally5k339 2 года назад +4

Those big dollar builds or ultra high end exotics are interesting, but it's much nicer to see an everyman's perspective on car enthusiasm that one can actually relate to.
And for what it's worth, none of your cars would be embarrassing to drive! Your AU for example has to be one of the most well-kept ones on the road, and keeping an ageing car in such good nick is highly respectable. I reckon quite a few fellow enthusiasts must've walked past it over the years and thought to themselves "wow, I haven't seen a nice one of those in ages"

Q: What do I really love? What do I really want?
A: To watch Motoring Box drive old cars through cholesterol selling drive through restaurants. To make tissue boxes for poorly designed locally made Gas guzzlers. But most of all, to see him pull up a chair as he prepares to tell about all that has gone wrong with his Ford.
This is what makes me happy 😃

I hear you mate. I grew up the same, always tinkering with billycarts, bikes, cars. My dad was a petrol head and loved cars and it was our bond. Unfortunately he passed away 6 years ago and not long after that I had those same feelings about my mortality that you mentioned. Shortly after turning 40 I thought stuff it and bought myself a near new 2016 STI. It sits most of the time on the garage and honesty is a waste of money and it may be a “boy racer” type of car, but I wanted one for 20 years and I figured you only live once. I put a 3 inch turbo back exhaust on to get the subie rumble and on a nice day, I throw the car seat in for my son, wind the windows down and that is my happy place.

    • @MotoringBoxTV

I had that same thought but at a very young age after a couple of dead goldfish and a cat.
I have gained some valuable info about my car from your YT vids, thank you.
I get where you are coming from with cars, I gravitated more towards bikes and do all the services
and repairs myself, currently riding bike No 17 and still own No 16. I also own a a good condition silver
AUII Fairmont Ghia (tickford) yep, same as yours, I bought for
$600 about 7 years ago, springs shocks bushes and most of the ball joints done, BF XR6 rims
and a bunch of other bits and bobs, very nice to drive and handles surprisingly well 👍😁
Thanks again and keep 'em coming.

There's a gap in the market for an Aussie to do HubNut or RCR style car reviews of other people's cars. I'm sure Sean would find plenty of people in SEQ willing to lend him their cars for an afternoon. Even if it's only one video a month, it'd mix things up a bit.

We are all individuals, nothing wrong with a 9-5 and driving any car, as long as you get a-b, put food on the table and roof over your head, I love your videos, it truly reflects the motoring story of the everyday Aussie, Keep up the awesome content mate and long live the mighty AU!!

Great video. Especially with everything going on in the world at the moment, its so very important to do what makes you happy, something which I have learned the hard way recently. Whether it's cars or boats, or sport or whatever, just go do it, be happy.
I have owned many ordinary cars over the years and have loved most of them and have enjoyed working on all of them. Everything from multiple Corollas to a Delica, and even a Prius. Never be ashamed to drive a car that you love, regardless of what it is as long as it's what makes you happy.

You're absolutely right there's nothing like the feeling you get driving something you helped keep on the road. Thank you for making this video it helps in so many ways i appreciate it. However you did leave one thing out that you are and that's brave. Take care!.

Thankyou for making this video. In my opinion it's one of the very best ones in the Motoring Box collection of videos.

Hey mate. This is something I believe in too. I own a 1971 Triumph 2.5 PI. I realise that it is probably not a good financial decision to restore it and use it everyday but I believe that it’s not only about money it’s also about what you like and want to do. I will probably end up spending more than half of what it will be worth to fix it but it doesn’t bother me as I will be having the time of my life driving it in a couple of years.

Would rather watch AU content than some of those “influencers” and their flashy cars. The everyday car and bloke is more relatable, and that’s something the AU and yourself represent well. We can’t all afford the best of everything, and to be honest, as I get older I don’t really care about that crap anymore. Being happy with what you have is more important, and if you’re not, you just haven’t found it yet.
