You guys are so awesome, I've ben waiting for someone to make videos that truly analyze and discuss The Beatles' playing, technique, creativity, musicianship, and gear. I also can spend hours and hours talking about this shit. Glad to know there are other people my age that are insane enough to think this stuff is cool. Thank you so much for everything you all do. Please, Please, Please never ever stop. And please keep posting your isolated instrument covers. Thank You!!!
P.S. Will you guys ever tackle some solo songs. I know that's a lot to ask but the playing is also phenomenal throughout the solo years by the John, Paul, George, Ringo, and they're backing bands. Nicky Hopkins...a legend

Glorious track and superb breakdown of the parts.
I absolutely love your dedication to getting the details right and your love for the wonderful music of what is still the greatest band of them all. As a pro musician myself, I'm completely in synch with where your heads are at.
I've always maintained (as an occasional tutor) that The Beatles are to rock music what Bach is to classical - that is, if you've studied and mastered their body of work then you're ready and capable of tackling everything else in the genre.
    Peace and love. :)

That was excellent, guys. Many thanks. The Fabs were so damn musical. And 'Hey Bulldog' shows that one of the many astonishing things they were able to accomplish was to play some quite busy parts and riffs which they slotted seamlessly into the overall arrangement without distracting from the song.

Interesting how Bulldog incorporates thematic elements of the Bond theme ("You can talk to me," ascending) as well as in the part (I'd not noticed and I have X-Ray ears so good job!) at 1:57 or so; the part you say guitarists should 'not' play - Barry's Ipcress File. Not stealing, not the same key or chords. Just a delightful influence.
Also the ascending part 'Bond' part, is an intro and crucial part of Split Enz "I Got You."
    Excellent video.

    • @ghramsey1681

The Bond Theme but also others. Secret Agent Man by Johnny Rivers uses the same chords as it's hook too.
Seems it was a popular chord progression.

  • @Allan-et5ig

I agree that JL had some influence in the solo even if George played it. My opinion. In answer to who plays it- the multitrack at Abbey Road is the answer. Those dudes are friendly and might just tell you. Regardless the 'writing' of the solo has heavy JL influences imho. It's WELL within his technical ability, naysayers be damned. Indeed, Get Back is a more difficult solo (studio version). The part you're playing around 4:28 is a direct relative of Magical Mystery Tour, the part carried by the horns starting in that song at 1:13. Have a listen - amazing! It's as if John and George were fond of that arresting 10 bar instrumental bridge and it came out in the solo.
I don't know if Ably House have checked out Alan Pollack's musicological analysis of every Beatles song but - the word is overused but this is - sheer genius. ...Though the observation about MMT's instrumental bridge turning up in the Hey Bulldog solo is my own!
    Cheers.

I talk about it in the video - it’s pretty straight forward honestly. The amp settings were very neutral, I got TI flatwounds on my bass and I have a vintage rick mute engaged in the bridge. Trying to pluck it semi lightly and not dig in too much, personally I think I’m digging in too hard still. But just trying to do as best of an impression as I can!

I agree with you that it is George on the solo, it is a really strange, unique and wonderful way to approach it. There is no Blues in it really which makes it different from almost anything another guitarist may have done from that era, seems way too involved for a John solo and Paul tended to play more distorted on his solos of that period. I guess we will go with that!

Lennon wrote it as "Hey Bullfrog" but at the end of the backing track Paul barks trying to make John laugh. John laughed and changed the name to "Hey Bulldog" which is not said until the very end. Also McCartney misread Lennon's written words "Measured out in news" as "Measured out in you" John liked that better and kept it in.

Counterpoint: the solo is definitely double-tracked, it's possible they both played it.

I may have asked this before. I am not certain. In the wiki for Hey Bulldog there is a quote of Geoff Emerick saying "Harrison's solo was sparkling ... one of the few times that he nailed it right away. His amp was turned up really loud, and he used one of his new fuzz boxes, which made his guitar absolutely scream."
Which fuzz box did George use? In 1968 there were not very many. Maestro Fuzztone but that was not "new". It had been used on Taxman.
Is there any information on that piece of their gear?

    • @elirosen1391
      @elirosen1391 3 года назад

I think most of the distorted tones from 1968 came from the Vox Conqueror. But Geoff Emerick specifically states that George used a fuzz box on "Hey Bulldog". So maybe it was the MK I Tone Bender? He also added that EMI designed fuzz units themselves for the guys to use.

    • @ronaldoortiz1958

Among Beatles writers and musicologists, Everett, Ian MacDonald and Winn write Lennon performed the song's guitar solo.[22] In his 2006 memoir Here, There and Everywhere, Emerick instead recalls Harrison as having performed the solo, writing: "Harrison's solo was sparkling ... one of the few times that he nailed it right away. His amp was turned up really loud, and he used one of his new fuzz boxes, which made his guitar absolutely scream.".... So, Harrison or Lennon?

Astounding, as ever, lads. You guys are providing an invaluable service to Beatles fans. I do love a lot about this song, especially the guitar solo (which does sound a lot like Paul to me) and of course the bass, as well as the unexpected chord progression-but I've always had a problem with the main guitar riff. Seems weirdly "unworthy" of the Beatles somehow. They seem never to have released a musical phrase that was in any way banal or expected or derivative. A riff like the one in Paperback writer or Day Tripper seem quintessentially Beatles because they simply don't sound like anyone else. Somehow this one is just too evocative of bad 60s spy TV shows or something that a lesser band would have been happy with. Can't put my finger on it. Anyone agree?
