The point of the F-16 is it is a weapons platform. They're not going to be dogfighting with Su-35. The goal is to give Ukraine aircraft that can carry the wide array of NATO spec weapons and use all of their capabilities without having to modify old Sukhois and pre program missiles on the ground etc. F-16 will be old versions but what matters is what armaments are supplied. They need stuff like long range AMRAAM, JDAMs, AGM-88 HARM etc. The fact Sweden also gave Ukraine some AWACS capability is priceless. Ukraine 12 months from now are going to have a serious air force with dozens of F-16s and the capability to target Russian jets from long range, attack targets in Crimea daily, and perhaps even sneak up on Russian ships and bombers operating 1,000km from the frontline if they get creative....

    • @Leonardo-from-Sweden
      @Leonardo-from-Sweden 2 месяца назад +17

Those Awacs kan also provide the F16 directly with radar data so the F16 can fly their missions with their own radar in silent mode. That make them very difficult to detect.

Both sides have enough modern anti aircraft missile systems to interdict the enemy over land they control. The F16 will be relegated to the same role the Russian aircraft are performing - using glide bombs from deep behind the front line. But Ukraine is not in need of platforms to launch JDAMs, the airplanes they currently have are good enough for that, what it needs is a large number of JDAMs and the west can't produce them in numbers that match the Russian production.

Here's how it's supposed to go: One side gets air superiority, then is able to help retain ground or support assaults by taking out the artillery, tanks, and vehicles of the opposing side. For UA, they can deploy demining vehicles and teams without getting hit by artillery, as well as start using armor more effectively once a breakthrough occurs. AKA Combined arms operations. This is where they can get back to maneuver warfare and out of the trenches.
Still comes down to infantry inching across a field on their bellies, but it's waaay better when you have all the big guns and the enemy has none.

As I said a bit earlier on this thread, if Ukraine can raise a couple of serious strike wings - armed to the teeth - those beauties will give the F-16s an edge like never before. This is especially true since mordor only has a few of their own AWAC-type aircraft left. An orc left the gate open to the airfield and an FPV snuck in and blew a couple of them to atoms - plus, Ukraine's own Patriots shot down a couple of others earlier in the war. Rumour has it that the ASC 890s are even more resolute than the USA's original AWACs. My money is STILL on Ukraine's air force!

Here’s my bad idea on how Ukraine can win the war:
NATO accepts Ukraine into NATO, but only the land that isn’t occupied by Russian troops. That would allow NATO troops to occupy Ukraine territory as a defensive strategy only. If russia now enters Ukraine territory, then they get to fully feel what NATO has to offer.
If Ukraine wants to still take back their land, they can now add more troops to certain front lines in order to take back territory knowing NATO will protect their land/ cities. NATO cannot assist Ukraine with troops in taking back Russian occupied territory, that still comes down to Ukraine.
    If Ukraine invades Russian territory
Pre 2014, then Ukraine gets removed from NATO and will result in nato leaving Ukraine’s country entirely and they’ll stop funding Ukraine.
Ukraine can now shove their forces until they take back their land. Putin would have a choice to make. Let Ukraine take back their land, or keep invading Ukraine and feel what nato has to really offer. It’s a lose, lose position for Russia.
    That’s my terrible idea

The part missing from deploying F16s is the lack of air to air refueling. Keeping them away from the enemy, where they can be more easily destroyed on the ground, means burning up limited fuel capacity just to get up to the front lines. You can carry external tanks but that reduces weapons loadouts. Having in flight refueling would be ideal, but the F16s are still going to have an impact.

    • @shakkabubba

You do realize that NATO AWACS aircraft are doing constant laps over the Black Sea and Eastern Poland to monitor the airspace over Ukraine, right? This is because Polish Patriot batteries can assist in the defense of the Ukrainian airfields from Russian cruise missile strikes. Like I said, we have had constant AWACS monitoring of Ukrainian airspace since the start of the war. It has been this assistance that has contributed to Ukraine's ability to keep their skies contested to now. To think NATO wouldn't task a tanker to refuel F-16s is a stretch. As long as the tanker stays in NATO airspace if the Russians tried to shoot it down or interdict it, that would be an act of war against NATO. Russia would never risk open war with NATO. The fact that they do all of their threats shows this. Those threats are meant to scare off weaker leaders because they know if they were forced to back up their threats they would lose.

This incident is particularly notable because the Indian Air Force has been looking to replace all MiG-21s, often referred to as "flying coffins" due to their high crash rates. This event challenges the perceived superiority of the F-16. As tensions escalate between Russia and NATO, we may see more instances where the pilot's expertise plays a decisive role, potentially dispelling some myths about the invincibility of advanced fighter jets.

Alex Hollings over at Sandboxx News spoke recently about the F-16 Falcon's ability to carry Nuclear Weapons. In short, the ones Ukraine are getting are NOT Nuclear Capable. The nations pledging them did not have Nuclear Weapons, so the very specific equipment was never included, not that it mattered as the USA had no intention of providing anyone with Nuclear Capable Aircraft in the first place. All of Ukraine's F-16 Falcons will have is Conventional Weapons.
That said, the F-16 Falcon may arrive in a batch of 45 planes, but there are more than 1,000 older F-16 Falcons in the USAF's Reserve Inventory. These are also more advanced versions than what Ukraine is getting right now and have been continuously upgraded to keep them close to competitive as possible for Reserve Inventory Aircraft.
Should the USA decide to, it would be able to part with possibly up to 200 of these Aircraft in small batches of about 20 Aircraft or so in the future. Ukraine would be getting some top-rated F-16 Falcons, of which DC is unconcerned with secrets of the Aircraft falling into Russian hands given that the UAE has THE most advanced F-16 Falcons in the world. More advanced than the USAF's own F-16 Falcons even and that's because the USAF is getting both the F-15EX Eagle II and the F-35 Lightning with rumors anew about a stopgap acquirement of brand-new F-22 Raptors due to the length of time NGAD is expected to take.
The removal of those Reserve Aircraft for Ukraine, likely not to actually reach 200 if you ask me, would actually represent a major fiscal savings and thus allowing more newer Aircraft to be purchased and to drain down the Stockpile of F-16 Falcon Spare Parts and Components, which would save even more funding. Thus the USAF would be able to actually afford to restart F-22 Raptors Production in a limited capacity to get more Fighters and may even decide to slow down acquisition of F-35 Lighting for more F-22 Raptors, though the F-35 Lightning Production would not change due to how many nations are acquiring F-35 Lightning. The only difference is that nations waiting on F-35 Lightning would get their Aircraft sooner instead of later and well... The Winged Hussars will arrive if Russia gets too eager to start something.

Hm, that sounds like the F-16 would singlehandedly establish air superiority in Ukraine. That is, to say it carefully, very optimistic, especially with the low number of planes Ukraine receives. Much more likely is, that the F-16 is not a gamechanger. It will give Ukraine slightly better capability (e.g. use western precision glidebombs themselves), but by far no air superiority over eastern ukraine.

Yes, another "wonder weapon" until it isn't. I don't gamble, but if I do, I will bet that F-16 will not change the tide of war for one simple reason, Ukraine had more fighter jets that are comparable to the F-16 such as Su-27 and MiG-29 in the beginning and they couldn't match against the Russian air force. A few dozen F-16s is not going to make a difference against hundreds of MiGs and Sukhois.

And he's right. F16 is a 50 year old plane and the ones going to Ukraine are the oldest spec. Imagine the Vietnam War fought with 50 year old planes. Russia has shown it can deal with Western advanced technology. Storm Shadow, Himars and Patriot - Right at the start, these were trumpeted as game changers and briefly they were. Now routinely brought down or the launcher destroyed. Leopard 2, Abrams M1 and Challenger 2 tanks - all described by similar screaming "Putin Fears" monikers on channels like this - have all shown themselves to be highly vulnerable to the tandem warhead Kornet missile. JDAM and ATACMS - more declared game changers; vulnerable to Russian electronic warfare. The F16 are no different, other than they are old hat. Russia will adapt and bring them down and now that they have western weapons sussed as over stated, their tails are up and the are making progress. The half hearted response by the west, particularly in this last year, has played right into their hands. It also shows how poorly prepared NATO are for any future war when they ran out of even the basics like ammunition. Meanwhile, the Chinese look on with interest - their ally against a NATO supported enemy, and they seem to be getting what they want.
