The fact that the Swedes have donated 2 AWACS-type aircraft should help Ukraine IMMENSELY. They should allow Ukraine's F-16s MUCH greater radar coverage - and multiply their effectiveness.
Awacs are flying in Poland, Romania and the Black Sea 24/7 providing Ukraine with the gathered information. Two more planes flying the same paths will not do any difference.
You are wrong. The Swedish planes will fly over Ukraine itself and will 4:42 be able to radar guide the missiles from the F16s so they can have theirs turned off. That solves a vulnerability the F16s have. The Swedish planes will be a huge advantage. @alexbort3082

No but when your already a fighter pilot it doesn’t take as long to learn a different aircraft and I’m sure the combat techniques/maneuvers between us and Soviet pilots aren’t too far apart from each other , after all most of our systems and doctrine was designed to fight and defend from each other .
People been driving cars for 20 yrs and still can't drive. Imagine re-learning how to be a fighter pilot AND learning to speak a different language just so you can read the instruments and all the technical manuals needed to then someday start learning HOW to actually fly what to them would be a space ship compared to the Soviet era Bi-planes they were flying.
Not only do they have to take time to train pilots to use F16s effectively and efficiently, which is a lot as it is, they also have to train the maintenance crews on how to repair literally everything on the jet: from weapons systems, the avionics, the engine itself, etc. and not to mention there’s a LOT for each of those. Not to mention they have to fix battle damage and learn how to load bombs properly as well as get the right aerospace ground equipment (AGE) for the jets, obtain the previous maintenance records for each jet AND learn how to properly document the maintenance that will take place once Ukraine is ready to deploy the 16s to the battlefield. It’s not an overnight thing and ALL parties involved have to be trained to handle the 16 properly. Lastly, it’s an American aircraft, it was manufactured completely differently than the Soviet aircraft that Ukraine had. It’s like training a Toyota mechanic to be a Bugatti mechanic: it can happen and a lot of the concepts are similar but the engineering in a Bugatti is a lot different compared to a Toyota
The repair issue is not as critical -Planes can be shipped out to be repaired or even based in neighboring countries, high speed video links provide live assistance.
The missions will not be dogfights but rather deploy weapons from a superior platform and to extend a cone of uncertainty over the F16's operational range ( including weapons)

@@stephenwilkinson1254 I beg to differ, western made aircraft are far more complex than the old soviet era aircraft, the maintenance of western aircraft can’t be supported properly by video link, and basing them in neighbouring countries would be seen by Putin as a direct involvement by that country/NATO in the war and he could possibly attack that country and compel NATO to intervene. I spent 24 years as a “maintainer” of western built aircraft and to properly maintain them you need a conversion/manufacturers course just for starters, then you need time to gain experience and more knowledge and the different skills that you have to employ, and that is hard enough for an experienced engineer to do, the Ukrainian maintenance personnel have to more or less start from scratch, yes there basic skills won’t change, a spanner 🔧 or hammer 🔨 are the same thing in any countries toolbox, but things like computer diagnostic equipment are not, each different aircraft have different support equipment and that can take weeks just to learn the basics, and even when you have the ability to collect data about the issue you have to be able to interpret that data and act to address the problem, the diagnostic kit can only tell you so much, the rest is down to experience, and that is just one of the different challenges they will face, it is not as easy as Hollywood portrays the operation of aircraft, get just one thing wrong and somebody could die, the pilot, or maintenance personnel, they need to train the engineers just as much as they need to train the pilots, and that takes time.
The F-16 is the most commonly produced aircraft in the world , so too should be both experienced pilots and ground crews, active and retired , for a fee of course ,who can “spread the wealth” of there knowledge, fighter pilots had a great deal of input in its design.

Out was a o e of a kind revolutionary type of plane. It is fly by wire. Meaning when you pull on the controls there are no belts and caables actually attached to the control surfaces. Those are completly gone. When you move the stick a computer interprets that and tells the control surface how to move. Everything about the F16 was state of the art at the time and honestly it’s still a bad ass plane. Why else do you think it is still in production to this day. They are still building them in Georgia as we speak.

I think the F-16 is good for Ukraine because they aren’t as expensive as the F15, they are still fast and can deploy any weapons in NATO and it’s the most mass produced fighter plane in history. Ever. Like 6000 I think have been built. Pretty much all of our allies, except for like Sweden and a few other country’s, use them so spare parts will be plentiful. Now on down the road I would like Ukraine to eventually get some F15’s and maybe when they are in NATO the F-35. But the F-16 will give them a lot of bang for not a lot of bucks.
I don’t think the side stick is such a big issue. Many pilots shift from commercial fly by wire aircraft to warbirds and back, they are different, but you adapt. The yak52s the Ukrainians are used to have very light control forces. As to combat Gs, the footage I’ve seen suggests they are pulling hard. Ukraine rejected Australian F18s offered to them, which had tired airframes with G limitations, but otherwise all the capabilities of the older F16s that are coming. Apart from complicating logistics and training, the major limitation was- not good for high G combat
Depending on modification of Mig 29 more likely F 16 will be facing Mig 31 and Su 37 which are much faster and manuvarable then anything US have...
@@NathanDean79 F16 can't be arm with anything which is provided by NATO to Ukraine till now most of the spare parts you are dreaming about are gone ages ago to Romania,Israel and Turkey. Back in 2020 there was a bidding war for parts both Romania and Slovakia brought second hand planes and need it parts .Israel and Turkey still have a big fleet of F16 and even US in the past brought some parts to repair old frames for the National Guard....
I watched a documentary once where this young pilot Luke Skywalker went from driving a land speeder to flying an X-Wing Fighter.

As a child in the late 1970s and early 1980s, I had a plastic model of the fighting Falcon the F16. I read articles about this fascinating aircraft, and it was considered the Porsche of combat jet fighting. After all these years and now at age 60, I am impressed that American engineering has proven itself to be the best when greed and avarice doesn't play or stand in the way of a perfect invention that has stood the test of time. It's not the best of the best but has adapted well and it was suppose to have been retired years ago but it still shows that it has a place in the world of fighting evil and avarice today. Let's Go F16 and the Brave pilots who fly them into victory!!!

Hmmm. You are saying it is difficult for Ukrainian pilots to transfer their current skills set, which includes actual combat on the F16 platform and yet the pilots are saying it does not. In reality, given how long this war has been going on, its clear we in the west have been dragging our feet, maybe for our own security reasons.

it's really not easy tp switch platforms. A jet is not a car and jet fighters are infinitely more complex. It would take them a couple of years to really learn how to fly one and not get instantly killed.

My guess as to why we haven't seen F-16s yet: probably waiting for more patriot batteries & AA assets to get delivered to better secure flight facilities without leaving Ukrainian cities further exposed.

the actual reason is that you need the infrastructure and logistics to fuel and maintain them,
That means more US logistics in theatre that can only be manned by US troops on the ground to run the systems and do the maintenance, technicians to arm them on each run etc etc.
It's a very complex thing, you can't just park an F16 in an airfield, pump some gas into and fly it all day long. For every hour of flight they need 17 hours of maintenance. This means you need safe hangers (there are none in Ukraine) and places for those US troops (who aren't officially there) not to get bombed, and specific fuel supply lines that is undoubtedly different that what MIGS use.
Imagine Russia takes out an F16 base which they most surely will take out a few, when the service men come home dead how does the President spin that one to the families and the the world. He would have to admit to Russia that we have active troops in Ukraine (which they know but can't prove yet)
It looks like Ukraine will get F-16's soon. The Ukrainians have been doing their best to destroy the S-300, S-400, and S-500 anti-aircraft systems in Russia.
That would be the main thing that would pose a problem to the F-16 squadrons.
Without those defensive batteries, Russia won't be able to shoot them down easily. The F-16's can operate mostly unhindered.
The "delay" is nothing but the monumental task of getting logistics and training up to par for a sustainable new modern weapons platform.

People really should just ignore the Nuclear Part of the F-16 Falcon's ordnance. These are NOT the versions used by the USAF. Which only operates a VERY small number of Nuclear-capable F-16s to begin with! These are EUROPEAN operated F-16s that NEVER had the necessary equipment installed to even carry Nuclear Weapons, let alone to be able to arm and drop them.
And on that subject, with the right equipment, a Su-27 and MiG-29 CAN ALSO be made Nuclear-capable. It all comes down to equipment. And just to point out an oft overlooked fact, the United States Air Force actually AIR-LAUNCHED A MINUTEMAN NUCLEAR BALLISTIC MISSILE FROM THE BACK OF A C-5A GALAXY TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT!
Sorry for the big letters, but I wanted people to see the point. And mind you, the USAF hasn't operated a C-5A in 40 years. That should tell you how long ago we did that. And just to note, it is RUSSIA that keeps bringing up the F-16's Nuclear capability and that it is an American Fighter. Yes. But last I checked, Sukhoi and MiG are RUSSIAN Companies with Ukraine using RUSSIAN Fighters. Now these F-16s are coming from Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands. NONE OF WHO HAVE NUCLEAR WEAPONS AND THEREFORE DO NOT HAVE THE EQUIPMENT TO MOUNT AND OPERATE NUCLEAR BOMBS!
Again, just pointing out for those who are obsessing over the F-16's LIMITED Nuclear-capability. You want real fear, there's talk of making Nuclear Warheads for Rapid Dragon. Those Cruise Missiles delivered by Pallet from C-130 Hercules with no special equipment required. Yeah. Panic if you see Rapid Dragon coming.
That said, the Missiles haven't been modified yet. Security and Safety concerns after all. But that doesn't change the fact that the F-16 also uses the HARM Missile in all THREE of its modes, which the modified mounts on Ukrainian Soviet Legacy Aircraft CANNOT do. So, for Russia, that's a big Oh Shit moment.
Oh and rumors are going around that F-15 Eagle might be heading to Ukraine as well. Older USAF F-15C Eagles. And Russia better remember, that right now, F-15 is 104 and 0 and took out a Satellite for show in the 1980s.
The sole purpose of the Dutch F-16s was to deliver nucleair bombs, if needed. Nothing else. Sure the Netherlands don't have their own nucleair bombs, but Russia is well aware about the number of those bombs ready for use at Woensdrecht airbase.
The nuclear capability is nothing more than posturing. The world knows that Russia isn't going to launch any nuclear attacks over this war. Unless Ukraine has some sort of crazy breakout and starts making a bee-line for Moscow, it's not going to happen.
I can say this because Putin isn't going to risk his own life or his legacy as being the guy who started a nuclear war and then lost it in his own country. If you want to know what will bring every NATO ally actively into the fight and ensure Putin ends up in prison or worse, it would be launching a nuke. China isn't going to want any of that smoke, and Russia collapsing only benefits them. Ditto for India. North Korea might make some stupid gesture, but Iran wouldn't fuck that mess with Cuba's dick.
Nuclear war only ensures Putin loses and Russia is wiped away as a functional state. Their military would be gone and Russia would become a military governorate and the federation broken up. Putin would end up assassinated by his own people, standing in front of a firing squad or in Guantanamo Bay for the rest of his life.
He's not dumb enough to launch into that. He needs the war to continue if he wants his economy to not fall apart.

Considering the Ukraine armed services are using a western fighting style, this could get them not just stability, but proper air superiority. If that happens, that is how they regain their eastern salient from the Russians. If you don't have proper air support, you can't run a proper western ground assault to run the offense. I think the Russians are very scared of the things to come.

There has actually been Ukrainian pilots trained on JAS 39 but it is as he say a logistical issue.
We Swedes have tested the Meteor missile on the F-16 and we have also provided a couple Erieye planes to the upcoming war effort.

@@larseriksson1741 Also, the Gripen is an aircraft built around the idea of having to fight Russians without direct support from NATO and with dispersed logistics and infrastructure. So it's a great plane for the current scenario. Hopefully Ukraine will eventually get Gripens too.
The Jas Gripen are specifically designed for easy logistics. But the number avalible is a bit low.

F-16 training is not about a few pilots learning to fly a jet - it's about an entire air force learning, adopting & implementing an entirely new doctrine. It involves everything from the planes, the pilots, weapons, pods, parts, ground crews, airfields, storage sites, supplies, fuel, tactics, procedures, mission planning, approach & execution, and far, far more, far, far beyond both our knowledge & purview. This is, at a minimum, a 5 year process when done at rushed pace *IN PEACETIME!!!* Doing all of this in less than 2 years in the middle of the largest, most intense & destructive conventional war the world has seen in decades is nothing short of miraculous. So, for all of us looking in from the outside, maybe we oughta keep what we think to ourselves and let these professionals pulling off real-life Herculean tasks do their jobs.

America sent Abrams without proper logistics, and Ukraine abandoned them in the middle of the battlefield. It is better to be slow and correct this time around.

As a veteran of the American wars, I can say that your understanding of our equipment will decide how well you succeed
The planes are fine and dandy but Ukraine doesn't have enough pilots to fly all the fighter aircraft that have been promised so far. They have 30-33 pilots ready to retrain on the wests fighters and already about 90 fighters promised and that number is growing. We need some volunteer fighter pilots to come forward.
If the USA allows private military contractors to go to Ukraine, Would they be allowed to fill that roll?
The planes are needed if downed and the pilot is ok. And they can't leave the skyes unmanned, got to have reserve planes when they get service. If you have 30 pilots you need to have atleast 90-100 planes just to not have anny unmanned skies.
Read a little, Ukrainian pilots have been training since last year in the US, UK and France.

Take into account downtime for maintenance. F16s need a lot of maintenance.

Ukrainian pilots have been training in Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona for a wile now. One of the things that we never read in the news.
Already in March 2023 NBC News had reported that Ukrainian pilots were already training on simulator at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, so they've been at it for a while now. It just takes a long time for all involved to become proficient, and it's far from just the pilots that need training, but also the mechanics, ordnance specialists and loaders, crew chiefs, and more. Supply chains need to be established for parts, fuel, weapons, and everything else. Those who ask what's taking so long don't realize how complex this operation is.
Which further corroborates the fact that U. is merely a tool in NATO's proxy war.

The real reason we are hesitant to send F16s is because the F16 is the most purchased fighter jet in history. It is still a top seller for countries that can't afford or are not allowed to have the F35; therefore, they can not allow it to look bad in combat. Therefore, it's not just teaching them how to fly it. It's about teaching them to fly it with modern warfare tactics in coordination with other weapons systems. They also need to have the maintenance capability up and running because the only thing worse than being taken out by the Russians is being taken out by your own mechanics.
The F-16 will likely be extremely effective at striking air defenses using HARM missiles.
The F-16s can also be maintained and repaired outside Ukraine. Keeping the mechanics safe in Denmark dramatically improves the expected lifespan of the fleet.
Until Putin attacks Denmark.
The F-16 will also be equipped with a small-diameter bomb so that it can fight from a greater distance from the battle lines.

i am for the F16s, but i also hope our goverment can send some JAS-Gripen fighter jets mostly due to their possibility of landing on roads, which could be a nice backup plan and does not require as much things like the F16 does

Not only land but also start. A bit of a roadstrip in the middle of nowhere and you have a temporary airbase.
Here’s the problem, they’re releasing 1-6 jets each time and the delivery batches are coming only once every few months. U actually need mass in numbers to make a difference. If Russia has 6 Su35s deployed to fight 2 F16s, it isn’t really fair

Why the F-16 is because they are being replaced in many countries by the F-35 so there are plenty of surplus F-16s now and more becoming surplus every month. There are literally countries that have them sitting around wondering what to do with them as they don't need them anymore. Giving to Ukraine not only makes the world safer but gets rid of jet just taking up space at their air bases.
Indeed however the F-35 JPO has had 1 year delay in accepting new F-35 from Lockheed Martin which limits any delivery to partner countries. JPO just agreed to a limited version of Technical Refresh 3 so that acceptance testing of those new aircraft can start. That won't complete without the full function software release that will come later.

The F-16 is the best multirole fighter but not the best air superiority fighter, that title belongs to the F-22, in terms of range and payload, it remains unmatched but we would never give those to Ukraine, there are the F-15s that reigned supreme until the F-22 arrived as a possibility. The F-15s are contemporary to the Su-30/Su-35 in terms of performance and payload.

The Ukrainians are a very, very innovative people. They will find uses for them that will teach everyone else a few new things. In the hands of Ukrainian pilots, the F-16s will be deadly and - I believe - sufficient to get the game going for a strong counter offensive. The addition of more planes to the fleet later will help to build on what Ukraine will undoubtedly achieve with the first batch.

Dassault is pronounced dasso and Rafael is rafal which means burst like in machine gun burst or gust as in gust of wind. The main reason for the frsiry of F16s is their availability since they are approaching 5000 units. Rafael an Grippon are much rarer. Much less of them could be supplied. It's that simple. Wtf, I'm very disappointed in this video. Too much hype, too few facts. A bit more sober reporting would do you well.
Additionally, Ukraine did not "choose" the F16 because of its interoperability with NATO. It's the one aircraft that was available in significant quantities in a reletively short time span, especially because this plane is gradually getting phased out in western countries.
The F16 hasn't been chosen over the Grippen or Rafale because of NATO "compatibility". It has been chosen because thousands of them were made and many countries are currently phasing them out so there are the best option at the moment. The F16 is a very well known plane in many different countries so it is also easier to find coaches to train the new pilots. If some F16 are lost, the real pain will be the loss of the pilot, not the plane itself. If you look at all the weapon systems Ukraine got, they are often old and being currently replaced so instead of trashing them, they are sent to Ukraine. For instance the ATACMS development has stopped in 2020 and it was already planned to replace ATACMS from 2023/2024, the first new equipment has been received in December '23. The French AMX 10RC is being replaced by the Jaguar. Of course there are also modern and current weapons sent to Ukraine, like the CAESAR, Patriot or SAMP/T anti missile systems. But this war is, currently, mostly fueled by old technology (beside UAV of course). And Russia isn't able to make any significant progress for 2 years, in a war that happens at its border. It is a total failure for Putin.

You should take that issue up with Ukrainian air traffic control as well as the airlines for directing a commercial plane over a war zone. Also remember that at the time Russian separatists in the Donbas were not officially recognized as part of Russia as Crimea was. Russia is not responsible for the shoot down.

Try to get the facts correct. JAS 39 Gripen is compatible with the same weapons.
But there are not enough numbers of the JAS built.
Anyway, Ukraine still wants them in the longer perspective. And Ukraine pilots has already received an introduction to the jet.
It was my understanding that the gripen has been promised to other countries that Ukraine wouldn't get any for a couple years. Let alone start training on them. The gripen would be a great choice for any budget minded country.

@ronaldholverson257 Yeah, if not for availability, the Gripen E would have been a perfect plane for Ukraine. It's built to fight the Russians while using guerrilla war style that Ukraine is using.
Actually, Sweden offered to send them to Ukraine recently but were stopped by the US. Gripen contains US part and as such the US can decide where they can be exported. The reason the US claimed was that its better for Ukraine to focus on one air craft type at a time. But many in Sweden think that its because the US dont want to be upstaged if the Gripen and F-16 were to be featured at the same time.
Edit: Oh and also Sweden have more than 100 of them. If they sent 10-20 they would not be missed.

The fact is that Ukraine preferes the Jas 39 C for the folowing resson. A larger combat area, lower RCS, can use road bases, needs less maintenance, has a much better radar with a detection range of 150 km. Uses less fuel, cost 6 000 for a flight hour while the F16 costs 15 000, the Jas is a 9 G fighter that can for a time be used at 12 G turns. Jas has a better E warfair suite. Jas can carry Meteor missiles, will probebly be equipped with a GaN radar that at full effect increases detection range to 250 km. Can be equiped with RB 15 that will have a stand of capability of 250 km. Can use the same weapins as the F 16. Ukraine has asked for the Jas 39 C from the Swedish government. The Swedish government was asked by the USA to delay the Jas delivery to let the F16 delivery to be the first to arive to Ukraine thinking that Ukraine has not the capacity to introduce two systems at the same time. What was said here that they prefered the F 16 is wrong since they mostly will be getting F16 block 50 and some block 52. Jas 39 C is superior to those blocks.
While some comments and opinion are with some degree of truth here is the real truth.
Ukraines has not had a proper fighter since the begining. They fought well with inferior older fighters and kept the bear out using US taught tactics. What will they do with the F16? We can debate that all we want however in a couple of weeks when they arrive then and only then will we know for sure. Yes some will be shot down but it is the balance of the outcome and the effectiveness that is the proof of the pudding and brave Ukrainians have appetite to eat the pudding and tell the world how it tastes. Well put. I think the delays are due to training the pilots on US, i.e. NATO, tactics so they can work alongside NATO when this inevitably escalates. Remember, neither previous world war just broke out instantaneously into widespread conflict. We spent months on full-speed logistics prior to the liberation of Kuwait (for whatever that was worth to anyone besides Haliburton).

Honestly I was saying back in 2022 when Biden was wavering on whether to provide F16s, do the training now, it doesn't commit us to sending F16s but it means that if the need arises and we think it's a reasonable risk they can be operated as soon as possible.
The West should have started the Ukrainian F16 program 2 years ago, but instead dragged their feet thinking that Putin would withdraw. This shows that the West grossly over estimated Moscows resolve.

One big possibility that Ukraine might be looking at, is the large commercial airports in Crimea. F-16s arriving would give them a real chance at taking those airfields and being able to base strikes from there. They are plenty large and smooth for F-16s. Ukraine would be able to concentrate air defenses there.
In modern warfare, anything stored in an aboveground unprotected hangar is an easily spotted target.
