As a solo artist, she was awarded the prestigious Best New Artist GRAMMY Award in 1987. Furthermore Jody Watley was only the third black artist in the history of the recording academy and broadcast to receive that honor.

Watley’s eventual fusion of jazz, and deep house music makes her a long time staple in underground club culture and dance music. From her groundbreaking marriage of rap & R&B (1989’s “Friends,” a collaboration with hip-hop legends Eric B. & Rakim pairing that is the first to crossover R&B/Hip-Hop, Pop and Dance into the Billboard Top 10 “Friends,” to her vision-forward marriage of high fashion, street fashion and music in the ‘80s (long before it became the norm), to her fusion of jazz and underground club culture with keen pop instincts, and the ease with which she crossed and still crosses genres, fused with cutting edge trendsetting style;Jody Watley forged the template that is now everybody’s playbook.
With her latest 2024 release the internationally embraced “EVERLASTING” which reached #2 in February on the UK Soul Chart produced by Watley along with longtime collaborator jazz musician and former musical director Rodney Lee with additional production and remix by Italy’s renowned Alex Di Cio a favorite of UK Soul radio. "EVERLASTING -THE REMIXES vaulted to #2 on the iTunes Top Albums spot in April.

An original member of the Disco/R&B trio Shalamar before her departure in July of 1983 after 5 1/2 years. Jody Watley kicked off her solo career while living in London, a part of the the historic 1984 UK charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas” Band Aid. Two limited release dance singles for Phonogram Records UK in followed 1985. After returning to America signing with MCA Records. The monumental multiple platinum self-titled solo debut album was released in 1987 producing 4 Top multi chart Top 10 Singles (Looking For A New Love, Don't You Want Me, Some Kind Of Lover and Still a Thrill).
