I think you basically re-discovered an old geometric axiom, that the diagonals of a trapezoid can ALSO be equal, just like a rectangle. I'm always making boo boos like that dang rim beam SNAFU. Glad to know I'm not the only one.
11:00 I notice you don't like to use joist tape (black butyl that comes in 50' rolls to protect exposed edges), but assume that's a choice you made specifically for the enclosed portion of the screen porch.
I like the screen under the decking boards. We all make some mistakes and at least you admit it and don't mind showing. I feel your frustration with the boards being wider or thicker in some variables at time's we get that alot in South Carolina. Keep pushing forward and great work
Suggestion. On your next deck job. Might want to try rolling tar along tops of your joist. Prevents rot. I know this is screened in with a roof. But any extra preventive measure is always helpful
Thanks I've seen people use protecto wrap on top of the joists before kind of thought it was Overkill. Now I'm starting to think sat with azek decking it's probably a necessity because the framing will need to last so much longer because of the composite decking and trim. Very soon probably early April I will start a another screen porch project that will be all composite finish. I will for sure but protecto wrap behind the ledge where it mounts to the house and on top of the joists just for additional safety and to make sure it lasts for a long time. Thanks for the info
Great vids! We are getting ready to do this on our house. So glad you included your mistakes. A question- is the ledger board attached to the rim joists on the house? We discovered when we dismantled the old deck that the ledger board was only attached to the exterior brick, held in with lead anchors!! Its a wonder the deck didn’t fall years ago! So im watching closely. The new ledger board will be lag bolted to the rim joist of the house.
I would prefer to have concrete all the way up to just above grade, but, this homeowner wanted to shave the cost. Setting the post on a footer below grade and backfilling the hole is allowed by code. Thanks for the comment
The simpson hangers usually use teco nails, but, they do have a screw option. It's a specific screw that they sell and are more expensive, so, that's why I use the nails. Thanks for watching
@@horstcarpentry I just built a whole Deck with decking screws for everything even the hangars. I used bolts where the Post are though. Do You think I should take off the screws from the hangers and put nails? I think they are just normal hangers from Home Depot.
The nails that they sell for the hangers are definitely stronger even than regular framing nails. I know it's a lot of work but it would be better with the teco nails.
Just dark screening from Depot. I'm pretty sure it's fiberglass material. Look for the larger rolls the pricing is much better that way.. You may have to order them online. Thanks for watching

Why the screen? I didn't hear a comment for that. Also I noticed many of your deck boards were crown down. I've always heard deck boards should be crown up because of curling. Don't know if that's gospel or not. And one last comment....I have also heard boards should have a gap but I've learned over the years to pack'em in as tight as possible because when they dry they will shrink leaving a gap. I built 2 decks last year and even though I put them in tight there are gaps still getting bigger. So much so that I will probably have to remove and replace some of them.
I've always put screen underneath that way nothing can come up through the deck board gaps. I had some deck boards that I installed down strictly because the top side was very bad looking. I agree with you and would normally not do that, but, because of the 20ft lengths if was harder to get visually nice boards. Always install treated lumber decking tight. It will definitely shrink up and have gaps. Even before I finished this job there were gaps in the boards. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy the job
Glad I ran across your videos. I've been searching for a build very similar to yours. I've been wanting to build a "Sunroom" off the back of my house and haven't been able to decide what kind of roof to put on it. What I'm wanting is a 16x30 ft room with 6 ft sliding glass doors as the walls. 2 on each short side and 4 across the front long side. I figure they can be opened during spring and fall and be bug proofed with the screens or opened all the way. I'm also thinking it will be less expensive to go that route. I just couldn't decide whether to go with a shed style roof or a gabled style. I don't know what the slope is on my roof but it's not traditional. It's just a slight slope so maybe the shed style will work. Will have to check out some of your other vids. Thanks
What area are you in? I'm in east, Tennessee. Your doing good work. I also do the same thing as you for work. And from what I can tell Me and you have alot of similarities
That screen porch job was in Severna Park. The addition was in Severn / Odenton area. At my other company I had a lot of jobs down in Davidsonville, Annapolis and Edgewater. I drove a lot more back in those days

Thank you for that comment. Ive always wanted to show what something looks like in real life....not TV. Glad you enjoyed the job

Thank you so much for sharing your project. Awesome video!

You have to cross brace those joists. That way they won't warp and it'd fix that one warped board.

Thank you
Always use exterior torx screws instead of nails.
I like the screen idea
When the gap fills up with debris it can always be vacuumed out.

Great you show your mistakes along with what goes well. Screen under the floor, I wouldn't have thought of that! No inspectors to deal with here?
This is real carpentry....mistakes and all. No inspections on this one😎

If you use batter boards to square and do your holes first it's easier to do
Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching
Is it ok to fill up post holes with dirt?

Can you just use deck screws for everything or do you need nails for the hangers?

The rubble should have went in the holes with concrete
Some of it could've went in there

Are your ledger bolts sinking through the wood?
I think I countersunk the nuts on the end of the ledge bolt. Sorry, it's been awhile since I did this job
How much cost fineshed job
It was $7500, but, that was in 2019. It probably would be more like $15k - $20k. I hope that helps you. Thanks for the comment

Why did you put a screen at the bottom?
It will prevent bugs from coming through the bottom once the decking shrinks up and has gaps between the boards. Thanks for watching
