Things have changed in the last 50+ years. The front of receiving barracks had yellow footprints but only four wide and seven or eight deep. They faced the barracks and led into the front hatch. The rear of receiving barracks had yellow dots and you could fit an entire platoon onto them. You faced toward the south end of receiving barracks and were taken inside via the back hatch off of your right shoulder. The red bins were to the north and you went down a red brick deck. The staff that greeted you all wore "C" dress blues except for some of the non-recruit handling staff. They did the paperwork, issued your first clothing, barbers, etc. The attitude of drill instructors and receiving barracks staff hasn't changed much in that time. Still as nasty as ever.
August 24th, 1997. That was the day I began that 13 week journey to becoming a Marine and more importantly, a man. It's going to be 21 years in 20 days. Unreal sometimes...because it's just as fresh for me looking at this. Platoon 1009, First Battalion, Mighty Bravo Company
I understand. I went and got a short flattop haircut a couple of days before I left for PI. Of course, they did it all over again. I think the objective is to take away as much civvy stuff as they can, project total control, and project that you don't know anything and that you can't do anything right. That worked well with me.
a good attitude, a strong body (get in shape before you arrive), and the thought that no matter how bad things get you will make it through--what is 12 weeks compared to the rest of your life/?
14 Jan 1974 is not a distance memory. The Marine Corp Recruiter picked me up at 5:00 am and 12 hours later I was at MCRD on the "Yellow Foot Prints", wondering what I got myself into. After 100 days (90 training days) I wasn't a 19 year kid anymore.Best winter camp.To the following,Drill Instructors, Platoon Commander,Series Gunnery Sergereant D I's Sgt.R.M.McCully, Sgt T.W.Prahl, GySgt.V. Yes! Lots of flashbacks. I noticed he is an SDI and a Sgt E5. He's on a fast track for SSGT, being an SDI. We were picked up at the Yamassee train station and did drop/pick up bag drill for quite a while before leaving for PI. I took time to look over to my right at a DI, having only seen Jack Webb in the DI and wanted to see a real one. I had no less than two DIs come at me from both sides, yelling and screaming at me for moving my eyeballs. That was my very first encounter.
Watching that video made me realize something. We were only on those yellow foot prints for a couple of minutes, yet I have never met a MARINE that did not remember them as if we had stood on them for a year. And at the time, it seemed like a feaking year. Memories fade with time, but EVERY MARINE remembers the yellow foot prints.
This old. I think 2012? Thats the year I went to a recruiters office and didn't make it far cause of not having a high school diploma. 8 years later, I'm going there in 28 days, December 14th, 2020 or 20201214.
remember this Boot Camp is the easy part--you will be expected to maintain the standards your entire tour whether it be 4 years or 20 yrs--and let me be the first to say Semper Fi
yeah im sure there s more to it than meets my eye, but just from my persective seems kind of odd chain of events! but thanks for your share of experience!
my brother should've been in that group! We think we saw him but we're just not sure :( Thanks for uploading this though, it gives some reassurance that (we think) he made it there safe!
We took a train from LAX to San Diego. We waited and waited and a military green school bus showed up with a Lance Corporal and he said get on board. As we drove through the gate he said welcome to Disneyland girls. As soon as the bus stopped all hell broke loose with three no neck DI"s It shocked my system so much I didn't take a crap for 7 days.
I was in this too, I didn't even realize they were filming us. I remember the next night when we finally got to go to sleep some jackass on firewatch turned on all the lights in the squadbay at midnight and made us get up because he read the time wrong.
LMAO at the airplane! May of 1994, Platoon 1010, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion. SDI Sgt. Newton with DI's Sgt. Rojas, Sgt. Jacobson, Sgt. Salinas. When we started training we had to scream back at those planes. AAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!
back in the late 60s the DI would say you have 10 seconds to leave the bus and i'm standing in the door--many went out of the windows--guess things have changed until the cameras stop rolling then it is "fun time" no real abuse but physical training use to discipline and "no one "ever gets hurt" well not badly
at 2:35 that plane was a friendly reminder, that they are stuck there and there's no leaving boot camp lol. i bet some of these guys are regretting joining the marines.
the majority of the recruits regret getting there the first week, especially after the "Black Friday" (not the friday after thanksgiving) its normal, but everyone just disregard that regret. I actually regretted the first night I went to sleep, lol, but every friday when I heard the graduation parade, I always counted the weeks for graduation and thought, "in 13...12...11...10...9... (and so on) weeks I will be there on the parade deck"

Happy graduation Charlie company.
4:46 Guy with the black uniform in the back of the line is MP?
Probably a civilian contractor
Could be possible. I'm not sure about the uniform, but I don't think that the MP is dressed in all-black.
If it was military he'd be dressed in desert digitals, the civilian rent-a-cops don't wear military camo
went to go talk to a recruiter on monday and got the call today to take the asvab! gonna be put in DEP. I can't freaking wait!
Speed and Intensity!!!
They are being taught to obey instantly, lest they are shot at.
2:40 brings back memories. Our DIs would point at the planes and have us war cry till the plane wasn’t making noise anymore.
I was somewhere on one of these buses. Couldnt find myself on the video though
I leave for basic in june!!!
June what?
Ignorance is bliss, my friend.
there is a reason for this--the privs are tired after a long trip and arrival after dark is another shock--it works
I remember thinking this was the hardest shit I'd ever do, then as a 0311 I got deployed to Iraq that was the hardest shit I ever went through.
Thankyou for your service Mike Bravo

about 10 pm pacific time
