I really like this format for comparisons.
Really loved V30. You can't really appreciate the difference between all of them until you listen to that format of comparison
Yeah the V30 is awesome! Thanks for watching Stefano!
Best format of a speaker video yet. Thanks man
Greenback for clean and light overdrive. Vintage 30 for heavier overdrive and distortion. Great demo!! Love hearing how they sit it the mix.
Great shoot-out...
Very clear and precise... thank you so much.
Greenback: balanced, open and has enough top end.
Really good vid, very informative. I am thinking about changing the celestion in my Fender hot rod for a Jensen Neo and this comparison was very helpful.
Loved this comparison format
What a great way to demo different speakers! Liked several, guess that’s why pairings are so popular \m/
such a well made and well presented comparison video. great job!
All are perfectly usable nice speakers.
Watch it without looking at the video screen. The stock Lighting Bolt is actually pretty good, similar to the Jensen but less efficient. The Vintage 30 is good but has some top end fizz, and would likely be better suited for a higher powered amp. The Cannabis Rex has a high-mid frequency roar that I really don't like (louder isn't usually better). The Greenback takes first place, with Sample 2 being the best reference for clean and dirty tones.
I have a Fender Blues Jr. with the stock speaker and have been planning to buy the Jensen 100. This demo was perfect.
Excellent - Excellent demo and very clear what we were hearing and seeing. Like it a lot. Interesting how some were great for a particular type of music being played - none were all around perfect but the Vintage 30 then Greenback then the stock BJR were my favorites.
Yeah, those were my Top3 as well, except Greenback was on 1, then V30 and then the BJR.
Greenbacks by a mile. What a brilliant format btw
Many musicians do not like the shrill peaks of most guitar speakers. For these the Jensen Tornado is the best option. It has the most neutral sound and saves you a lot of weight in the cabinet/combo.
I have one, love it
Yep the Tornado or the Cannibis Rex for that situation. The Tornado has the benefit of handling twice as much power and being about half the weight of a Cannibis Rex.
a serious comparison method, well done!
Nobody talking about the lightning bolt probably because it's a stick speaker but I love love love it.
I like the Jensen best
I have the V30/G12M/Rex tested them all and liked the Rex the best, and use that one all the time. But in this test it sounded rather dull. Placement of the mic could make a big difference, too much off axis for the Rex (which is fine for bright speakers like the V30). But still very informative and well done! Thanks!
Excellent presentation, very informative, many thanks. Currently researching lightweight neodymium speakers because I am not getting any younger. Interested to hear opinions.
Great demo!
Celestion Greenback and Vintage 30. I was surprised how close they sound to each other during the entrée test.
When did they do the appetizer test?
Very good shootout, well done. The drum track helps a lot with showing real life differences. And good choice of speakers, for a 1x12 setup I'd go with the V30 or the Tornado.
best test format ever !.. thx... Jensen !!
I was thinking of putting c12n on my HRD but after hearing that Jensen Tornado... it SINGS! 🎶 what do you think guys? Tornado on HRD. I want that Frusciante type of tone.
This is why we have tone controls on our amps, my stock Fender cab is brighter and my Celestion Greenback cab is darker. love the lightning bolt here thanks for posting this...
Given the limitations of listening to an amplified speaker through your computer's amplified speaker (subject to whatever the internet does to it on the way), this is not really a very good way to audit speakers. You really need to hear them in person. Having said that, this is one of the best online presentations I have seen on the subject: we are hearing the same sample through each speaker so we can actually determine the speakers' relative characteristics. We are not dealing with the distraction of a presenter (who is concentrating on looking good) playing differently through each speaker so we have no idea what is the speaker and what is the player. That is the problem with most of the other videos online. Congratulations @UCGom8O99-aRzQWv1e_CfnvA for doing an excellent job comparing speakers in an objective fashion. This is an actual apples to apples comparison a consumer can actually use.
Thanks, great comparison!
Well believe it or not...that Fender Lightning Bolt...Sounds the most like nearly every 70-80's recorded guitar recording ever recorded...just my 2cts
Great video man! Man that greenback nailed it. I never liked that v30, but man I dont know what happens when you use overdrive with it...
Hello, I would really value your opinion if at all possible please? I have taken one of the 12 inch (JA3066 - in super condition) speakers from my old 70's/80's Yamaha G100 212ll amp and connected it to my new Hughes and Kettner Deluxe 20 amplifier (20/5/1Watt) and it sounds great. However, do you think I would do MUCH better to invest in an new speaker such as the speakers you are comparing here? also, should I go 10 or 12 inch for home use? I like playing clean and also Hi Gain. Thank You
great demo, can you do a high end demo next like p12n, cream (90) etc..
I like the Greenback and the V30 more. Maybe a conbination of both?
Thanks a lot for this comparison, Miike! Nice work! It really helped me a lot to decide what Speaker to choose.
Just bought a Palmer 1x12" cab with that Jet Tornado Speaker from a friend two days ago. It's absolutely awesome for any kind of sound or style, even at very low volumes. Sounds like the perfect mix of the Celestion green back and the V 30 to me.
Compared to the other Speakers, the two Eminence models just fall far behind, when it comes to overdriven/crunch sounds. They all sound pleasant, every one in its own way, clean. But the distorted sounds really make the difference: The Eminence speakers both sound weak and muddy and don't cut through the mix. The greenback is just a little too dark sounding to me, while the V 30 is too harsh in the high mids. But that just might be the reason why it's the number one choice of most modern metal players for aggressive high gain sounds.
In my opinion the Jet Tornado seems to be the best of both worlds. Very balanced but still powerful. And - as it is the only Speaker with neodyme magnet here - it can handle 100W and is ridiculously lightweight (about half of the weight of a V 30!).
These are all good speakers . If I had to choose only one I would pick the Eminence Fender Lightning Bolt
The greenback sounded great. I own the cannabis Rex in a Princeton and I found the speaker very responsive to treble knob changes. Assuming all settings were the same on the amp, the cannabis Rex really sounds good with a bit more treble and the bass rolled off
I thought the Jensen was the most balanced. The celestions lacked lows and the eminence lacked highs. The Fender lacked mids. But any of these could be the better match for different gtrs or amps.
instablaster...
Agreed
I liked the vintage 30 best for over all balanced tone. I had cleaner top end with balanced miss and lows.
Excellent demo to choose sound!! Greenbak superb and then Fender Eminence to me.
im split between the celestion vintage 30 and the jensen. The only ones that sounded truer and less muddy. I think I like the Jensen the best
this is a fantastic demo and a great format for comparison, well done. i wish more people would be this organized and systematic about their demos, they are often worthless. my only wish is that you did a clean funk vamp also, i'd like to hear the attack more in a portion of the clean demo. liked the 12m greenback, curious to see how it stacks up against a jensen p12n
Agree. Probably the best shoot-out ever on YT.
I usually love Greenbacks, and liked it clean here, but found it a bit harsh on the gain settings. I thought the Jet won on most settings but wanted a bit more high end shimmer. Lighting Bolt next best. Best comparison video out there, great job
Мне тоже понравилась наглядность вашей презентации.
Celestions were the only ones that didn't sound like they had a blanket over the cab...good show on the vid - better music than most - liked it.
I just visualise the frequency range : canabis favours low mids, greenback has a nice curb all through the mids to the high frequencies, V30 has a bit more highrange and a clearer cut before the high mids, Jensen is balanced, more hifi on all frequencies, Lighting Bolt is the same shape as V 30, but slightly more on the low side and more scooped. The choice depends on your guitar, the music you play, the way you play, how many others you play with. Nothing like a good recording session to understand what you needs are.
12M greenback is my favorite speaker. I use it for anything.
Drop tuned extreme metal to el84 british chime with my tele and strats.
AMEN!.. I just spent solid 5 hours in my living room testing most of the speakers above (minus the jensen but throw a weber12F150 in the mix).. I have 2 amps, fender blues JR and a DRRI.. Conclusion: I am selling/trading my other speakers so I can have a greenback on each amp lol. Cannabis Rex is the biggest looser (beautiful cleans, kinda dark and SUCKS at taking overdrive). Second place is a close one between vintage 30 (more mids) and the 12F150 (more treble)
wow celestion rules! i never thought that. maybe some other competichon was left out?
The Celestions are bright and midrangy, the Eminence speakers sound dull and the Jensen delivers the best balance of lows, mids and treble frequencies - although it could have a bit more upper mids and treble. Surprisingly, I wouldn't go with any of these speakers. Thanks for the comparison!
Vintage 30 , clear sounding . Midrange prominent .
They all had their merits, the fender sounded a little more unique, yet still nice.
I thought the Eminence patriot sounded a little dull.
Its all about finding the right speaker to fit your amp & style. Right now, Im really digging the WGS's ive heard...
If these amps were in a Grossman Iso Cab then there may be a lot of low end buildup around the microphones and maybe even comb filtering from phase cancellation. This was a good A/B between speakers, but I feel like having the speakers in an open back cab and in a treated room would be a better comparison. Awesome video though!
V30 and Greenback sounded very similar in this demo. I liked the Eminence Cannabis Rex.
1. Celestion Greenback; 2. Jenson Tornado. As for the others, the V30 is too spiky in the midrange though it does cut thru a mix well and the 2 Eminences sound like they're being played underwater. I've had 4 of the 5 speakers at some time in the recent past ('cept for the Jenson) and now use Creambacks as they have more power handling, otherwise a Greenback would fit the bill beautifully. Good video by the way.
can u run a GB 25 with 40watt head?
Super test!Greenback!)))
Greenback and Vintage are similar, but the VIntage did much better when slammed with gain. I never understood the rage about the Cannabis Rex. Always sounds like there is a blanket over it. I don't mind a speaker being bright because you can always roll tone off, but it's hard to add in treble without it sounding weird. Jensen was kind of in between. Still a bit dark.
Whish you would have added a blueback as well, other than that great comparison, thanx!
great demo, not sure any of these were my cup of tea, not jangly or glassy enough. Vintage 30 was alright, I've owned several cabs with those inside, but my tastes have changed a bit since I bought those.
very nice preso....This confirms it: I'm a greenback lover.
Awesome demo thanks!
I think the Celestions have the best midrange by far. The Jensen Torando would be my second choice. Least favorite is the Canibas Rex way too mid scooped would never cut through the mix imo.
I totally agree. I kept the Green Back, but would like to have the Vintage 30 as well, sounds a little more "hifi", whereas the GM sounds more like ROCK! (if you know what I mean -)
HELP ME OUT, FOR THE FIRSTMINUTE OR SO I HONESTLY DON`T HEAR MUCH DIFFERENCE IF ANY AT ALL ??
With distortion the greenback seems to add a natural compression that sounds so good. I'm really surprised how poor Cannabis Rex sounds to me.
that cannabis REx with distortion is amazing!!!! wow
Ragin Cajun by Eminence is my speaker of choice. I prefer it to the Cannabis Rex, wish it was on the list.
That was long time ago ...
Why don't you do more speaker comparisons ?
I'd like it. 😁😁😁
They are SOOO much work :-(
It would be hilarious to find out it was a done through the same solid state amp
Why power handling is so low for such big woofers?
First time I liked the celestions over anything in the test. The T Rex was disappointing in this test but the Jensen Neo's had some good points, hm....
nice clean with the greenback and litlle overdrive. cannabis rex good for distortion
great demo/comparison!! I liked the Jensen far and away the best over all 3 tones - green backs were okay. eminence just sounded dull
It sounds like the mic position for the cannibis rex was a bit off axis compared to the rest?
That can't be. I used a Grossmann Iso Cabinet that has fixed mounts for
the mics and a fast-change system for the speaker. Having said that, I
used the same positions for all the speakers, didn't look for sweet
spots or anything. And of course the speakers had no break-in, they were
"fresh" so to speak. I guess with a couple of weeks of break-in and a
little time searching for the sweet spot, those speakers can sound
better than in the video!
I think that is the idea of hemp fibers in speaker cones.
They diffuse high end, hence the 'off axis' sound.
The same comparison video with two or three SM57 positions would be great. But I believe the cannabis rex has just a different "hot spot" for the mic. It really smooths the top end. It is a good speaker to balance the spectrum of a bright voiced amp. In some amps it may sounds a bit muddy. I have both cannabis rex and lightning bolt. Now I'm using the CRex in a blues jr III (with the circuit modded by me) and the lightning bolt in a bigger cab. In some situations I use two speakers at the same time through the blues jr: one cab miked to PA system (and pointed to me) and the other cab pointed to the band (when my bandmates needs heard me better). For bedroom levels, I use the larger cab alone with the lightning bolt with my 5W all tube Biyang Wangs head. It delivers a really nice clean sound in low volume levels, and a kind of plexi overdrive in higher volumes (but too loud for bedroom). Just awesome.
Greenback is the Gold Standard. Cannabis Rex is full of personality. I’ll choose one of them.
Celestion Greenback was most appealing to my ears; the Emi Fender Lighting Bolt the least.
Greenback!
Nothing sounds as good as a Greenback if you want that important woody midrange
Bravo well done!!! I own the Jensen Tornado in a few amps, best all around speker Ive owned
Thanks for your comment Derrick, means a lot! Those were the early days of my youtubing, didn't really know what I was doing, so it's nice to hear you liked it! :-)
All the best!
Id say greenbacks for clean and crunch but the V30 for distortion/heavy sounded better IMO
The best speaker is....the one that gives you the tone that *you* want. This isn't hi-fi. There should be no argument about subjective vs. objective measurements. For guitar cabinets, it is the subjective sound that counts. Saying that one is 'better' than another is as silly as saying that one reverb setting is 'better' than another. Anyway, that's my opinion.
The format is brilliant.
its important to note this is a way mixed and not matched comparison.
Holly Rocken Reverb Batman ... they all sound good
Jensen is strangely the Best sounding speaker in this particular lineup, which is strange in my opinion since they normally Sound brittle and harsh and not musical at all in my opinion.
The Tornado 100 is not a vintage reissue speaker- in fact, none of the Jet series speakers are. They sound fat, juicy, and sparkly, but the Tornado 100, 80, and 65 are totally different sounding from each other. 65 sounds like a greenback, 80 like a vintage 30, and the 100 sounds like a beast! I have some other Jensen's, like the p12q and c12r, but those are very vintage sounding speakers- the Jet series has major balls and sound very sweet and musical. Highly recommended!
V30 is good on clean and crunch, Cannabis Rex is brilliant for distortion
Celestian Vintage 30 then the Jensen Jet Series Tornado. I like the format.
Would be interesting to hear the v30 compared to a Jensen Stealth Tornado 80- it has way more mid range emphasis than the 100. They should have totally different names lol
Some single-notes would have been good. I think I liked the Greenback best.
After listening to this comparison with Sennheiser studio headphones, the Eminence speakers sounded far inferior to the rest. The Celestion speakers were the clear winners although I enjoyed the Jensen as well. I would ranked them; 1. Vintage 30, 2. Greenback, 3. Tornado.
Jensen is the most equilibrated!
I’ve watched this video dozens of times in the past couple years, and there must be some intense compression & EQing going on, many of these speakers have drastic volume differences and tremendous contrasts in EQ, but here the differences are subtle. I like this format, but wish the recordings were left natural. The heavy section at the end does good to highlight some tonal differences, but still seems more slight than in real life, where some of these speakers are very very different. Still appreciate the comparison
Surprisingly .. the greenback over all.
Celestine GB, 30 and the Jensen.
You really hear the difference on high gain
V30 still .. everytime I go speaker shopping I end up back at V30
WGS Retro 30 and Reaper 30 watt
I'm a fan of the Jensen here.
Celestions cleaned house by far
by far? really?
@@johnc3403 I think so. Clear, defined, open. Eminence are more bass speakers to me, as a bass player I may add.
The speaker sound way more different than the video implies
There are no implications. It's just the sounds of the actual speakers.
The Rex!!!
I love Celestion speakers! I have other brands, but I always go back to Celestion.
Here I think the Vintage 30 sounded the best.
Greenback all teh waihhh
Jensen
I expected more from the cannabis rex. I'm glad I didn't go that way. The greenback sounded a little more my style. More clarity and chime.
