I feel like Shaun could’ve been to snowboarding what Tony Hawk is to Skateboarding. He’s the snowboarder that has been able to reach the mass audience and pop culture. I am sure Tony Hawk faced and still faces similar issues that comes with celebrity like Shaun does, however Tony Hawk took this opportunity to become the voice of skateboarding outside of skateboarding and that’s what Shaun never did. Shaun is obviously allowed to do whatever he wants but I feel like that was such a missed opportunity and why a lot of people feel like Shaun cared more about his own success then being a part of snowboarding culture.
highly disagree with this. Why should Shaun be shoehorned into being the "voice of snowboarding" ? He did a lot for snowboarding in his own ways and wasnt recognized for it. Its a reflection on the snowboard community which isnt always rational and often very negative towards those who do stand out or are good at it, especially in the terrain parks.

Shaun was always about self promotion first and the snowboarding community second. Now he's acting like a martyr for the very decisions that he made for himself. I'd have a lot more respect for him if he just owned the fact the he destroyed much of the contest culture that came before him. He is the face of the corporate greed that crept into snowboarding and he still doesn't understand why he doesn't have everyones respect... Sad.
How did he destroy contest culture? He is the face of success - he is the reason so many of your favourite riders went up against him, and that was to beat him - that's what a contest is, winning and losing. Thing is, they were not good enough - but they were "cool". Most people can't handle that he doesn't fit into their stoner dude personality core culture bullshit. Its the same shit in Punk Rock, Surfing, Metal and so many other things. People want to be gatekeepers and god forbid making money or being successful should be seen as something positive. Corporate greed was always coming, if it wasn't him at that point in time, people would be mad/jealous at whoever it was.
He did own it. He didn't hide that he didn't share his pipe with other riders. He didn't destroy contest culture. Just bc he was winning? Getting first place doesnt stop other riders from doing what they do. Contest riding is still around and the culture is still there. There are plenty of riders that get the same treatment as Shaun for doing much less. The snowboard community as a whole likes to gatekeep people for reasons that are obvious if you're actually mature and objective with people.
@@rw8959 whats with every person saying ‘gatekeeping’. Imagine saying that about the most popular guy in snowboarding lol. Regurgitating bad arguments is bad.
@brianp9268 every person saying it because it's true, it's just that you disagree. It's disingenuous to act like that argument has no validity at all. Shaun white isn't the most popular guy in snowboarding, he couldn't be further from that, hence he's talking about his own alienation. And yes, the snowboard community inherently gatekeeps people because it isn't about how good at the sport, dilligent, or dedicated you are. It's about having 'the look', 'the reach', and other factors that sometimes trample traditional values like hard work.
