7. Eberhart Signature Saddle ( E.S.S.) reveal and proper usage!

- Опубликовано: 1 июл 2024
- This show will focus on the new "Eberhart Signature Saddle" and its advantages over other saddles and will have a short packaging video with Greg and Carl at the beginning. I will show how to use it and will also be in a tree showing proper hook-up and why. The ESS will be available on Sept. 18th and if interested there will be a link to the purchase site. There is some bad audio from around the 27:30 mark to 28:32 . It's only a about a minute and you can still understand the information. This portion was filmed before we purchased our new mics.

Got my ess. Love it!!! Where was this thing 20yrs ago?? I had first learned of saddle hunting maybe 3yrs ago
There was a comment that the ESS is a copy of the Anderson Treesling and my son Joe deleted it.
I on the other hand don't mind answering statement comments that are written by hunters that obviously don't know what they are talking about. The Anderson Treesling which is what I bought in 1981 and have made numerous modications to is very different than the ESS and I will be happy to inform that person as to why.
The Anderson Treesling doesn't have a an adjustable bridge (bridge is fixed to the lead), it has an extremely long lead strap that ties off to the tree and has zero adjustment once it's tied off, it doesn't have linesman loops and will not accept any form of safety rope for ascending and descending the tree safely, it doesn't have leg straps, it doesn't have a weight bearing adjustable waist strap, it doesn't have molles for attaching pouches to and it doesn't have aluminum D-rings that a bridge can self adjust on to evenly distribute the hunters weight when the panels are adjusted. The ONLY thing they have in common is they are both 2 panel saddles, that's it.
In your video you said that 16-20inches for the bridge. Where do you measure from? Is it from the D rings? I’m new to the saddle hunting. The ESS is my first. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
instaBlaster...
I just got my ring of steps today. I can not wait to give the entire system a try. Thank you John for taking the time and sharing your experiences
Come on people we have one of the countries top Whitetail deer hunters taking time out of his life to share knowledge and experience with us to make us better hunters .. why do people have to be petty and complain ....... How much does it weigh.... The sound is bad...... Be appreciative!!!!!!!!! You have the privilege of learning from the BEST!!!!!! THANK YOU JOHN!!!!! great video
Thanks Steven, but I don't get bummed by jealous rhetoric from hunters. It's all part of the game and if you want to be in it and help people, you have to bear the burden of negative feedback, of which there will always be.
@@eberhartoutdoors4219 yes sir thanks for the words of wisdom and knock em dead
Because anywhere you go....they're always gona be idiots. 👍
Couldn't agree more Steven..... I don't agree with everything that John says but I appreciate his opinion and his efforts.
We have evolved into a country of cry babies. Seriously folks whining about the sound.... dang the man is a hunter who is trying to help other hunters. This isn't a professional production here..... its a guy filming an informative video in his back yard for RUclips. Give him a break! Then some bonerhead feels the need to tell the world that he will never buy one because it costs too much. I'm sure John isn't going to be up all night worrying because some keyboard commando isn't going to buy this saddle. What the heck is wrong with people!
Thanks for taking the time John! Saddle looks good and I appreciate you explaining the reasoning behind the design features.
I am waiting for mine to arrive. Don’t know if I will hunt with it this year but will be practicing for next. Sure is great to have this level of experience working for me. Priceless!!!
John love your videos and respect all your opinions. I just never liked anything mechanical when I did tree work. Im the same way with saddle hunting.
I do love your signature saddle and it's probably because of the d-rings and I like the two panels. Way more comfortable than anything we sat in for hours on end and tree work.
Nothing against the Rope men. Just make sure you have a figure eight stop or not in the end to all the guys using them. There was someone that almost slid out of one that worked at asplundh Tree Service..
I don't like the prusik not either but there's a few others that I learned to tie that slide pretty well but you seem like me your pretty set in your ways LOL. Think that's why I like your videos cause i can relate to that. I use sticks but i also use ropes and I'm set in my ways.
Thanks for all the information! Rodger from Ohio
Had the original Tree Saddle years ago but seemed to large and sold it. Ordered an ESS from Tehrd as my Xmas present to me and was delivered in a few days to Ontario Canada. Picked up ropes from Maple Leaf Ropes near where I hunt. Already had biners from my HSS plus 11mm climbing ropes. Also picked up a Tehrd Predator stand. Still have muddy sticks to use. As John has decades of saddle time I watched most of his videos to continue my quest for more challenging hunts, Thanks John for sharing your expertise and knowledge.
John, I have had and used an anderson tree sling since the 80’s. I like what you have done to improve on anderson’s basic design. You have made it safer and easier to use. I think I will order one on the18th if I get lucky enough to get one. My only complaint is that you did not design this a few years ago. My tree sling is by far the most comfortable hunting method I have ever used. Keep up the good work sharing your experience with all of us “ amateur” hunters!
Rodd, if you've been using and Anderson for a few years you're not an amateur. You will like the changes I made, that's a promise.
I like the design of this. Looks comfortable and lightweight. Not a lot of stuff ya don’t need. But I’ve never hunted from a saddle before.
Glad you talked about taking naps in a saddle. I'm 62 and thinking of using a saddle, still have a saddle from my early 20s tree trimming. I'm not a fan of climbers, to noisy. Now I have two saddles in mind, and good information also.
Just bought one. Been waiting all day for them to go up on the website. Can’t wait to use it.
Just ordered mine cant wait! Gonna be my first time hunting from a saddle.
One of the best benefits of this saddle is, that, you can where it naked and poop right through it! game changer!!
That was supposed to be kept a secret!
🤣 spit coffee across the house! Thanks!!!
Ordered mine today. Can’t wait!
John, I've always appreciated the detail of your content and breadth of knowledge that you share with everyone. One question I keep coming back to with all the clothing changes is, once you strip down or you go in light and you stay up there to cool down before putting on your ScentLok and other layers, aren't you concerned about your scent dispersing in the area?
I got my ess today and I love it so far , I'm really struggling keeping those panels lapped over each other until I'm up at height but I'm sure I'll get there with a little practice , my first saddle and I couldn't be happier
For people not wanting to shell out for a ropeman a single loop of paracord can be used as well. I got an amsteel one with my Bullman Outdoors oplux linesman belt and it works awesome.
Another way is to run the tail through the carabiner and pull up to tighten the linesman's rope. The carabiner actually pushes the knot up using one hand.😐
Never tried that but if it works as well and as quick as a Ropeman and can save some money, I agree. John
Thank you thank you thank you. I hunted out of my old tree saddle last year. After that hunt my lower back was killing for the next two weeks. Now I know why.
Thank you John for this video. You’re one of my deer hunting mentors for sure. I have listened to almost every podcast I could find and read a couple of your books and I hope I can apply what I’ve learned from you to harvest a mature Michigan buck this year. This will be my first year in a saddle and I’m excited. Thank you for this video showing the proper way to use the ESS and for all of your knowledge you’ve shared over the years
How’d it go?
Fantastic demo. The two panel really is quite different.
Really looking forward to purchasing and learning the system. I will definitely incorporate it after this deer season and I have time to be efficient in practice out of it!!!! Good luck sir can't wait to see the success you have this year and the members of this page!!!!!
Best of luck to you!
Looks great. Good luck with the saddle and your season.
Thanks and same to you Bob
eberhart just blessed me with being able to sleep while hunting. thank you.
Just got my ESS this week, used it twice & NO more treestands for me. It was excellent. John, how do I relieve the stress on my thighs from the lower strap of the bottom panel? I think it’s because of the uplift caused by the leg straps, any suggestions would be great! I work in construction and I avoid any trends because it’s always the affectivness of the tool or piece of equipment over styles etc. & manual, personal, quick, easy adjustability is what I look for with anything. So I appreciate your utilitarian approach to this piece of equipment & I’m proud to own it. The ESS is the only reason I got into saddle hunting.
Made in the USA 🇺🇸 too!!
Awesome video sir!! Been waiting on one like this to learn more on the functions of the saddle! Looks like I’ll be waiting for yours to hit the market!
That orange buckle was stressing me out but hey great attest to the strength of it
Thinking about ordering one. Thanks for the instructional video.
I cannot wait to get my ESS!
Very good point about tether height! Good tip.
AWESOME SADDLE! And it's really awesome seeing John comment, class act for sure. ESS will work great hunting these Louisiana swamps!
Yes this will be my hunting system this coming deer season! Can't wait.
That's really awesome definitely some huge benefits to that system for sure.
Yes there are Russell and thanks for the comment. John
Can you make a video of your set up once tethered in? Placement of bow, backpack and how you place your top steps around the tree?
I'll definitely be ready to place my order. Bout time you put your mark on the saddle side.
Thanks Joshua
I’m sold on it! Going to give saddle hunting a try, just ordered my ESS 😀
Were did you order it I have trouble finding it

The link is in the description. It was on back order, but just shipped a few days ago.
Can’t wait to sit in one of these
Nice looking saddle system from a true legend! 🇺🇲👍
I’m buying me a Eberhart saddle ASAP
This is interesting, very different from the one panel design. I love my phantom so I expect this tethrd offering is a solid purchase as well!!
Great demo
I currently have a 2 panel sling and it is super comfortable. much more so than the prior single panels that I owned. I definitely like those D-rings on the ESS.
They are a game changer and work so easily. John
D-rings are a big plus and 2 panel saddles are simply more versatile and comfortable. John
I have a kite areohunter that I love but I'm going to get one if these because of the adjustability of the seating straps. Looks like comfortable support
Far more comfortable and the adjustable advantages of a 2 panel saddle is a big deal.
Use a micro pulley for that prusic to tend line or buy the mechanism for the lanyard through a tree gear place
Finally got my ESS, definitely not as simple as a mantis but way more comfortable. We'll worth the little hassle.
I feel like John would be the safety guy on the job site everyone likes. “These don’t really do anything, they’re just here for safety”. Lol love it
Love it
Can't wait
Screw I’m sold making my purchase now
The ESS solves all the problems I am having with my current saddle. I can't wait to get one.
On a side note, any talk about another book? My suggestion would be Whitetail Access part 2.
No talk of another book even though I have an outline for one. John
Whitetail Access was written by Chris, son of John. I was with him when he killed that buck on Martha’s Vineyard. John and Chris authored the How To books. Whitetail Access is actual hunts and what you can learn from them. Funny story, the title of that book was supposed to be Whitetail Nomad, cause Chris traveled all over the country in his van, hunting public land state to state, like a Nomad. Due to the 9/11 attack his publisher didn’t want the word Nomad in the title. We both liked Nomad better. Chris and John are amazing hunters. I’ve never met hunters with more dedication and perseverance. Many have copied their material, but these boys invented the game.
Great video on the how to use the ESS. Can you do a short one on implementation by Xbow and/or rifle hunters. Thanks.
I'm going to buy one & just display it in my glass trophy case.
Now that's a bit strange there Underdog! Good one - John
Yeah that’s an odd thing to do with a piece of hunting gear
@@eberhartoutdoors4219 Just joking, if it's sleeping in big daddy's house... it's putting out! LOL
John, you talk about how you'll be adding to taking off your layers during your sit. I'm a new saddle hunter this year and it would be very interesting to see how you add or take off your layers while in the saddle. Could it be possible to have you do a video on how you do add or take off your layers while in the saddle.
Great idea! We will definatly add that to the list - Joe
Great video! I'm interested in this kind of hunting. For future videos, I would suggest clipping your lapel microphone to the front of your T-shirt a couple inches below the collar. This should prevent the audio distortion that happens when you look down and your neck touches the mic.
100% correct James and we bought a wired mic just for that purpose, we're on a definite learning curve when it comes to videos. But the info is still the same.
Hi John. How often do you clean/wash your saddle? Have you ever washed in water with activated carbon? Thought I would douse it in a 5 gallon bucket with carbon after wearing it half a dozen times. Then let it air dry. Thoughts?
got one!
I wish they were USA made!
I haven't yet gotten into saddle hunting but am likely to try it next season. I know you typically use screw in steps to ascend, descend, and stand/lean/sit in trees when you hunt with your tree saddles. I am curious how you would hunt on land where you aren't allowed to screw steps into trees? How would you climb and descend trees and also stand/lean/sit in a tree? Would you use multiple tree sticks or that new one stick climbing method, or something else to get up and down the tree? Would you use a small platform or a ring of steps once at your hunting height? I know what you said in your DVD's 10 years ago. (I have all your DVDs and books.) However, it seems the industry has really been changing in the past 10 years and I am wondering which new products or methodologies you believe have a lot of merit and which are just hype or are dangerous? That might be a good subject for a future video. I think of you as old school because you have been hunting for so long, and when you show us the bows you hunt with they are certainly old, but you were definitely saddle hunting land recommending it long before I heard anyone else talking about it, so you are certainly an innovator. "John Eberhart's recommendations for hunting on land where you can't screw anything into a tree" might be a good topic for a future video.
We use strap on steps or sticks with a Cranford ring of steps - Joe
I really like the looks of this. I’m looking to switch to saddle hunting this year. I’ve been doing a lot of research, and I’ve not been able to decide between 2 panel and single panel. I saw a video a couple years ago were you jokingly said you may convert to the Tethrd Mantis. Are you still a believer in 2 panel? I know comfort is different for everyone, but that is number one priority for me. And I plan on climbing with a one stick method
There is no way I would convert to a single panel saddle as they are too limited concerning comfort and no adjustability. When the Mantis first came out I thought it was cool until I sat in it and then it was over.
Sold!
Thanks and there will be another video explaining more advantages but the next video will be on sparring, rattling as many hunters have saddles and want some KILL info.
Does this saddle work well with the drt method of climbing
Is this available for purchase on September 18th or was there already an order by date?
I know this may be a little bit late to comment but 2 questions..#1 why a strap for the bridge and not a rope? Pros and cons? #2 do u use those hauler bags on the saddle? and would it work with this saddle?
is it dangerous to use a crossbow in a saddle? (i haven't used a saddle yet)
Thank you for the great video. Is it made in USA? Also, will the Tethrd crew help with ordering the correct accessories? Thank you again.
Unfortunately it is being assembled in China (it will be tarriffed) with parts coming from all over. Keep in mind that I'm a sales representative in the hunting and fishing industry and know that to compete in the retail brick and mortar store market with similar price points as Hawk and Trophyline (both I assume are made in China) that the ESS had to at least be assembled at as low a cost as possible. The ESS was supposed to arrive in June and be sold into retail outlets as well as on-line in 2020 and obviously that didn't happen. That is the plan in 2021 though and although it will likely cost more than the Hawk or Trophyline saddles once all the required accessories are purchased, it is a far superior design and will be more versatile and comfortable. The factory in China is a premium factory that manufactures a lot of high end products for different hunting companies.
@@eberhartoutdoors4219 Thanks for the update! Wishing you a great hunting season and really appreciate your videos!!!!
Hey John, how do you do your steps on public land where "screw in" steps are not allowed.
In the beginning you guys talk about the awesome color combo (ranger green and coyote) but on your website it looks like a really light tan what’s up with that?
Nice John! Bcuz you hunt cold weather doesnt the tether force your jacket up the tether allowing wind to then hurt staying warm? I messed with new tribe saddle and sent it back last winter. TY
Not at all. If I'm wearing a longer Parka style jacket which most winter jackets tend to be a bit longer cut, I will tuck the tail of the jacket under the outer panel and it's a regular cut jacket, I will let the jacket overhang the outer panel. It's no biggie either way - John
New Tribe saddles are all single panels so you don't have the versatility of adjustments.
TY John for explaining.
What's your opinion on washing the ess ? I'm getting ready here in SC and was preparing my scent lok and packing my tubs etc... Should the ESS be treated like a pack in regards to scent control ?
John-
I realize the ESS can’t be pre-ordered but is it correct that I am not even seeing the product on tethrdnation.com? Only the other saddles are visible. Thank you
Glad you mentioned this and that is correct that they don't plan on putting it up until it's ready to be sold. I haven't went on their site in a few weeks and I never did just prior to Tethrd releasing any of their other saddles so I don't know if that's their normal protocol.
John, I ran across your channel and I've know about you and your reppatation as a great saddle hunter, so I came across your new video on your new E.S.S. saddle and it interested me greatly. I'm looking for a good saddle for me to use this season. However, I use a lone wolf assault 2 stand for rifle season. For the past couple of years now, I've had trouble with my normal harness in my stand. After looking on youtube, I've discovered that a lot of stand hunters are going to saddles. So I'm looking to see what type or manufacture of a saddle I should get for this year and give it a try. I'm also a believer in paying for Great equipment, so I don't go cheap when it's dealing especially with safety. Will your new E.S.S. saddle work for what I do for deer season and if so, are there any adjustments that I should make?
First off the ESS is only $200 (stand alone ESS). If you buy, I suggest purchasing 2 Tree tethers and no linesman rope and use one of the tree tethers as your linesman rope and use the other for your tree tether. I also suggest getting one Ropeman and the video for that reasoning will be shown soon. As far as a saddle vs stand is concerned, there is nothing you can do from a tree stand that you can't do from a saddle, but there are numerous things you can do from a saddle that you can't do with or from a treestand.
@@eberhartoutdoors4219 John first of all I want you to know that i really appreciate you sharing your knowledge in this field. I have done a more research and I'm convinced to purchase a saddle for this season. I have seen a ton of people that are recommending the two panel saddle. So because of you, I'm going to purchase one of your ESS saddles on September 18. I just hope I'm able to get one. Thanks for your recommendations, which I'm going to do as well. The Ropeman 2 is something I was going to do as well, as it seems to be extremely popular. Maybe after this season, I'll study up on saddle hunting and practice with your saddle and then next season can be my first with saddle hunting instead of treestand hunting. Thank you again John. Look forward to more of your videos.
I’ll be ordering one when they hit the website. What’s the weight limit on these? I’m 6’6” and 270.
300 pounds. John
John I have some back problems and its about all I can do to sit 4 to 5 hrs and after a few days of that I am in quite a bit of pain. Do you think this set up would take pressure off my back so I could sit longer? Thank you Great looking product.
Yes it will
Looks great, I cant wait to order. Hopefully I can get it before october. What is the price point?
$200 for the saddle and there will be limited quantities. Available Sept. 18th first come first serve - Joe
Are your saddles lined with carbon?
Surely I’m not the only one who noticed that strap barely hanging in the orange buckle during the demo in the tree? Maybe if the open ended buckle faced the opposite way? I really like this saddle but that’s just too risky for personally. Good luck too all and stay safe..
No one’s going to say anything about the left leg strap on the verge of falling off the loop!?! Lol. I know it’s not supporting anything but still couldn’t take my eyes off it.
we were also only about 2ft off the ground - Joe
Of course there sold out way to market
Looks nice! Just wish your audio was better.
Working on it! But I was able to hear the crappy parts well enough to understand or I would have redone them. We're still learning where to put the mics and we just bought a smaller mic. I had the mic on my shoulder and every time I lifted that arm, the sound sucked.
I am sure there is plenty to figure out with the audio, especially when outdoors. Keep up the good work.
I see that the ESS is already sold out. Any clue when you will have more in?
Early October
Check out the latitude outdoors method saddle it’s metal free and most comfortable saddle made today.
What would be the deal would be if the two panels can be attached somehow and then separate them after you get the main belt on. Just a thought.
You can separate them once the belt is on by pulling down on the inner panel. The belt on the outer panel is supposed to be just tightens enough to hold the inner panel (beneath it) in place for climbing and walking. Once ready to hunt you slightly loosen the belt and pull them both under your butt and then adjust the top panel up to wherever you want it. John
@@eberhartoutdoors4219 yeah I understand. I’m referring to holding something to keep them together while putting the main belt.
john,,do u have any idea roughly how many sddles will be available on the 18th? do i need to put my order in a minute after midnight because by 9am they will be sold out? silly question but worth asking..thnx
I think Greg is going to post them in the early morning. John

He said in the beginning of the video that you can’t preorder. Have to order September 18
At this point they are not accepting pre-orders and the website is: tethrdnation.com - John
Eberhart Outdoors thank you for the response. I hunt near Grayling and we love that you are making these videos. Michigan can be a tough cookie to crack! You have been a huge influence to me and my uncle! Can’t wait to see more. Good luck and be safe!
Those orange connectors with the open ends seem dangerous. They always seem to come out of place and can easily fall off. Why doesn't someone just replace these with small cobra buckles. People will pay more for safety. This saddle looks cool but I'm pretty sure if you go inverted on accident you could slip out of it.
Jesus 2 seconds into the video and it sounds like a QVC commercial.
The first part of the video was filmed by the Tethrd crew not us - Joe
@@eberhartoutdoors4219 Just messing with you man.
Do guys that gun hunt use a saddle. Is it even possible?
Yes
Why not an adjustable amsteel bridge John? It would slide thru the rings just as easy as the strap wouldn’t it?
Adjustable strap or amsteel, doesn't really matter and the strap was less cost and works perfectly. Once I have my bridge set for the length I like, I will not move it anymore. John
@@eberhartoutdoors4219 hopefully you won’t get sued over that cheap strap and how it attached to the d loop
Your leg strap is falling off
Weight???
Does that really matter, I mean really!!! This isn't an ounce here and an ounce there weight contest, it's about using something that will help in having more opportunities at killing deer. This weight thing is extremely out of hand and as you can see its made of fabric and has aluminum D-rings. Hunters should be far more concerned about items that are cumbersome and uncomfortable more than a few ounces one way or the other and I have no idea what it weighs and will not weigh it. I'm certain at some point someone will and will post it someplace. John
@@eberhartoutdoors4219 Damn whats the big deal? the weight is just another benefit. What does it weigh?
@@stdavis22 Have zero clue.
Haha damn. Who cares how much it weighs at this point. This isn't a hang on that weighs 10 plus pounds. I mean for Christ sake everytime I read comments for hunting stuff it's always about weight weight weight. All I give a shit about is this shit safe. Looks good jon. I have avoided saddles for awhile now cause they all look like diapers but maybe next year I will try this on.
Wow, I was just curious that's all. I like to be as light as possible. That's just me!
Bet it costs well over 200$ I’d never pay that for that type of saddle
Boneheads outdoors good thing is...you don’t have to. Man you’re a lucky dude!
I don't think anyone careswhat you'd do
That because you know nothing about them or how they are supposed to work.
Eberhart Outdoors now how much u think it costs to make that. I’d say no more than 50$ at most. No way it should cost more than the other two models there is less material. Have some common sense man.
@@silentdeathtx4 Less material? Maybe less useless mesh material but there is far more webbing in the 2 panels slings. Put the crack pipe down son!
Does it come in a doe scented version?
Drench it in doe in estrus! Just kidding and no. John
You're sure someone will copy the metal d-rings? I'm sure the Treehopper Recon had metal bridge buckles long before you designed this. I realize this is an old Anderson sling design but it actually appears as though you copied the Recon to a T. Minus the terribly designed adjustable bridge on yours. That being said, I love the 2 panel slings.
Sorry and nice try Jayson. The Treehopper has elongated metal loops that the bridge goes through just like the old Treesling I bought in 1981. The ESS had angled slotted aluminum D-rings and the saddle itself ride through the slots while the bridge freely slides along the D-rings. The bridge strap automatically self adjusts on the D-rings to however the user adjusts the 2 panels. Do you honestly think they are remotely close, because they are not and I've been using a Treesling probably since before you were born and think I know the difference. The adjustable bridge in the pictures I posted were from a prototype and the adjustment buckle on the finished product is much closer to the D-ring and is a different buckle. Also I actually like an adjustable bridge strap and once I put the strap at the length I like, it will stay there forever. Lastly, I've had this design for over 2 years which is well before the Recon or any other 2 panel saddle. I have turned down 2 designs of 2 panel saddles that were offered me that I didn't like and both of them were similar to the Recon and another 2 panel on the market. In fact, Tethrd made a prototype 2 panel saddle for me to look at that was identical to one of the 2 panel saddles on the market and I didn't care for it at all and stuck with the D-ring ESS. I've used a Treesling for 40 years and it has a very similar oval loop for the bridge and panel connections as the Recon and it works well, but not as well as the ESS. But it was a nice try.
