- This is the extraordinary Japanese restaurant where monkeys serve drinks and wait tables. The Kayabukiya Tavern, in Utsunomiya, Tochigi prefecture, has been employing macaques for 29 years - after a monkey called Yat-chan, belonging to restaurant owner, Kaoru Otsuka, started copying human staff voluntarily. At three-years-old another monkey, called Fuku-chan, started copying Yat-chan and now 14 years later he has become the star attraction at the establishment.

How about dogs trained at a very young age to become police or service animals? They don't have a say to what people are making them do. Is that any different?

These things are responsible for $31M in agricultural damage each year! What is so wrong with a few bringing in some tourist dollars to help someone feed themselves? Nice to see them keeping busy CONSTRUCTIVELY, instead of the DESTRUCTIVE behavior they constantly engage in. I hope this man's restaurant is a continued success and he employs as MANY as he can to help relieve the burden his fellow countymen experience on a daily basis.

They seem to be happy & having fun being the center of attention. If you want to see animal cruelty, go on the web & check out instances where baby monkeys are abandoned by their mothers, sometimes right after birth, or beaten by older monkeys who steal their food. Sometimes they are bitten by dogs, or thrown off high places, or beaten into senselessness. Many orphans are kidnapped by poachers & sold on the open market. Mos tof the times, these are bought by humans, who usually treat them well.

@@SereneJ there is a huge huge difference between pets and wild animals like monkeys. Cats and dogs have thousands of years of evolution and domestication that specifically MADE them house companions. Many dog breeds, especially the smaller ones, would literally die if they were put in the wild. They were BRED to be companions, monkeys are wild animals who have evolved without the same human influence. Just as I'm sure you can see there is a fine line between lions and house cats, it's the same thing with monkeys. They are wild, unpredictable, and thrive when they live in their natural habitat.

So some of you say this is animal cruelty and need to be banned. Well, if so, then Seaworld need to stop caging the whales and dolphins and train them to entertainment humans. Instead they should release the whales from. Not much difference. Seaworld does this even at a grander scale. Why not?
Unfortunately these animals can't express if they like this lifestyle. They probably would prefer to be free in their habitat or in a private home with access to outdoor space and trees to climb and free to play. Not cute or funny. 😞

You are right. I think people are upset that the monkeys are willing to help the man and draw customers. These monkeys look happy to me. There is no rope tied to their necks and the staff is kind to the monkeys. I would patronize their business. I bet you if some people came in to take them away they probably won't go.
