After watching Lab Muffin's video recently, It's interesting to see Butyloctyl Salicylate as the 4th ingredient when supposedly people prone to hyperpigmentation "need" to avoid chemical sunscreens. It's just disheartening to see fear mongering towards any population that just wants to stay healthy.

I've been waiting for your review of this! I know you really tell it how it is. In my opinion, it's too expensive for sunscreen (which should be applied generously), but I was interested to see if it lived up to her claims.
I really appreciate Dr. V's skincare philosophy for skin of color. It's true that she's super strict (almost fearmongering) about ingredients and strength of actives, but it makes sense. She's said that even if only a small percent of people might experience irritation/sensitivity to a certain ingredient (like fragrance), with hundreds of thousands of views on her channel, even that small percent equals hundreds of people, and she's not ok with that. So I get it and it's true to her values, even if a lot of us might not have the same philosophy.

i think the phrasing "maximum UVA protection is dishonest." 16 PPD is not the maximum and you can get much higher (like >50) with a chemical sunscreen. Yes, PA++++ is the highest rating but that doesn't = maximum UVA protection. she's intentionally implying that this sunscreen will give you the most UVA protection possible.

    •  3 года назад +1

I see what you’re saying. In technicality, she’s saying it has ENOUGH, but for like daily use. It has sufficient to have broad spectrum designation, but more in terms of a regular, everyday sunscreen. Not an ultra high UVA protection sunscreen

Just saw her video on common sunscreen mistakes. She says to put a quarter to a half teaspoon on the back of your hand before applying,
But then she applies much less than that to her hand. A quarter teaspoon for the face alone is a LOT of sunscreen. I measured it out.
Edit: to clarify, I don't like how she says to put thay amount and then DOESNT. While less than a quarter teaspoon is sufficient, I find it misleading when she says to apply a certain amount and then she herself applies much less than that

However, she is absolutely spot on about fragrances and denatured alcohol. Her claims are confirmed by my personal dermatologist whom I respect. It is also a sentiment universally shared by the vast majority of dermatologists in the world.
On tyrosinase inhibitors being AM safe, you may want to do your own research on which ones are photostable and which ones are best for you. Alpha Arbutin for example, is not photostable. I wouldn't follow any influencer blindly. No one is right, 100% of the time.

As for where I disagree with her, it's her claim that mineral sunscreens reflect UV radiation, while chemical sunscreens absorb, which is a bit outdated. The only difference between Mineral vs Chemical filters is that, chemical SPF absorbs 100% of UV rays, while mineral sunscreen absorbs ~95% of rays and reflects back ~5% of UV rays.

@@vacationeyes6430 Got it but when it comes to the difference between what suncreen ingredients do or don't do I have to say that I don't focus on that because the studies are really not clear or are biased or done by such or such brands or we don't even know exactly how the study was done. Although many RUclipsrs like to act as they are experts and the studies clear even when the real experts do not agree. Plus ingredients or percentage of ingredients is not the only thing that matter. The entire formulation matter and how are you able to apply and reapply a sunscreen properly. For those reasons I also rely on simply being very mindful of when I get exposed to the sun/ hat/sunglasses etc... But I heard of several Dermatologists including mine saying that they see in their practice a better reduction of hyperpigmentation when people use properly mineral type sunscreens rather than properly chemical type sunscreens and that's my personal main issue ( hyperpigmentation). So I also tend to trust Dr who see many different type of patients in real everyday life.

Congrats on getting your license and thanks for a well-rounded review on this. I will say I do agree that some Dr V's content around sunscreen types to use and her ideas on "good ingredients" vs bad are a bit iffy but well-meaning. I like her content and she has shared a lot on YT and has helped so many people figure out how to deal with their skin, howeeeveer I do think the fact that she deals with people who have really bad skin issues either naturally or through from misusing certain ingredients may have warped the way she sees ingredients like alcohol or fragrance, especially if they are the common denominator in her consultations. Like you said, the problem with alcohol or fragrance only affects a small amount of the population and certain alcohols, for one are actually only used to help the penetration of the actives in a formulations and evaporate very quickly after application so don't sit on the skin like most people think. Lab Muffin did a video on this too. Anyhoo, it's great to have options and I wish her well with Inzincable and I'm sure it will do well. For me and my household, the price is a little too steep for the quantity you get. My wallet would definitely be mad at me if I purchased this.

Thank you for this review. I think the biggest thing about this sunscreen is that it's suitable for skin of colour and doesn't irritate sensitive skin. I've tried alot of sunscreens and they just don't work for my skin. I am indian in coloring and not even in the darkest range but I get a white cast every time.
You're right in the sense that she does tend to be more conservative in her recommendations but that's because she always says this information is for those of us with darker skin colours who have issues with hyperpigmentation etc. She is a doctor and does tend to generalize which can be a bit scary if you don't listen to more of the content. With darker skin tones we tend to pigment more. You don't see it when you're in your 20s as much. You'll see it as you get older and by then for some people it can be too late if you can't afford the more expensive products that can have ingredients that can help. I'm in my early 30s and already seeing how quickly I freckle in the sun with sun screen. I've developed sensitivities I didn't have in my 20s.

Before watching this vedio, Dr V is a great person working for skin of color and her all products are great especially her sunscreen, skincare + protection. Skin of color works completely different from all other skin tone, a slight careless mistake can cause anything. Dr V is always strict when it comes to melanin kings and queens. She always put prevention first. And basically what she claims is what is good and bad for skin, it’s that simple . If you have no issue with denatured alcohol or fragrance but it’s not good or health to our skin for long time avoiding these chemicals are always good our skin. @Dr V is the best.

She suggests avoiding tyrosinase inhibitors (such as alpha arbutin, tranexamic acid, azealic acid) during the day for people who have hyperpigmentation. This is because the skin is more prone to pigmenting if SPF is not applied correctly over these inhibitors and most people don't apply the recommended amount/don't reapply SPF every 2 hours. We also don't know when SPF wears off exactly so it's better to avoid these products during the day if you have hyperpigmentation because sun exposure makes it worse.

Whether it is their own or someone else's product most influencers are trying to sell something..period. Even if it is just an idea. People have control over what they "fear." I find the idea that some random person on social media stating their concerns that may be different that someone else's is labeled fearmongering to be a sign of the times. Just don't listen or find someone you agree with. Everyone should be seeing a professional that touches their skin and use these videos as entertainment not the gospel. She was right abt glycolic for my skin but it may work for someone else. Everything is blown out of proportion and people look for someone to chastise.

I have watched Dr. V's videos in the past and it's geared more so towards people with sensitive skin vs people of color in general. I get that people with more melanin in our skin pigment easily but all of us doesn't have irritation to fragrance or alcohol. I would say that she leans on the side of caution more than derms based on her content. Fragrance and Alcohol damage happens over time. You might not have an issue with it until years later. It's nice for younger people to be informed that this can happen. My Nana was a Beauty Therapist, she had a Beauty School and Salons, she always told me to protect my skin from the sun and don't use fragranced products. She had the most beautiful skin with almost not wrinkles. Lots of things play into this outcome but that was her main advice.

You wont know if there is an issue right away and by the time you get to know it's too late. And her philosophy is that she doesnt want anyone with skin of colour with hyperpigmentation issues. And fir something like contact dermatitis which means she has to make it a generic statement than saying "dont use fragrances if you are sentitive' coz u wouldnt even know.

She is conservative with her product because she caters specifically to skin of colour, that gets Hyperpigmentation with the slightest irritation. Which is something npoc usually wouldn't experience, which is why they can get away with a little alcohol, witch Hazel, fragance etc etc.
Its marketed, more so formulated for these reasons ie skin of colour, so if you don't have those issues, they would sound so extreme because you can use literally anything and won't get such reactions.
However, due to uniqueness of skin, there would as well be some ingredients in the product that might irritate someone else, and if you're that person, then the sun screen is not for you.
She's keen to updates and reviews, so I'm sure she's already working on the critiques made.
