I dragged my poor husband to (yet another) plant nursery and I thought he was standing bored in a corner but he turns to me with these big eyes and starts gushing “Kell, you have to come see this plant! Touch the leaves! You should get this one” (worth noting that five minutes before he had implied I had plenty of plants)
It was of course a velvet touch. It might be my favorite plant in my entire collection.
The Rare ones you mentioned are common here in the Philippines. I feel blessed to know that 😅

My white fusion died the other day. Sadly I wasn’t upset, actually relieved to not have to worry about it. It was the most diva plant I’ve ever owned. I used filtered water, got it a humidifier and left it with it. Monitored soil moisture levels. Used recommended soil. It put off new growth and they instantly browned or withered.
I am still trying to figure mines out I hope it don’t die I put it next to the rattlesnake calathea
I’m in Melbourne Australia and the white fusion is a diva here too. People are beginning to have success placing them in a cloche. My next one I’m trying in a terrarium.

The Soaring Seaward Family I grouped mine with other plants to raise the ambient humidity from respiration(?). It did a bit better with that, but I noticed its pot cracking and repotted it. All downhill after the repotting. Oh well, live and learn.
Mine did that too but I kept watering it and it was like it went dormant and it is now regrowing. So.... if you still have it around you might try watering it. But yes, it's a diva for sure. The second one I had browned and died and it has not regrown at all, though I haven't given up on it yet.
Calathea warscewiczii is named after Józef Warszewicz, so it's pronounced var-she-vi-chi.

@@sunghoononice8796 That's the case in many countries in East (Southeast) Europe. -c is often pronounced as a 'ch' sound. Like the last name Danic is pronounced Dah-neetch. Although Polish does have a lot of consonants I don't understand, like 'sc' and 'cz'. I once landed on an airport I can't even pronounce, Rzeszów. And my friend has a lat name I keep forgetting the pronunciation of as well. I call him Przewalski after the horse, but he really doesn't appreciate that.

My very first calathea was an Orbifolia. I had been really getting into growing house plants for about 2 or 3 months when I stumbled across some at one of my local nurseries. They had a few crispy edges and the manager of the nursery gave me 30% off of the $6.99, 4" potted Orbifolia. Needless to say I bought 3. Then I went back a week later when they got their shipment in and got 5 more. I am now the very happy, proud caretaker of 8 gorgeous calathea Orbifolia, 5 of which are growing together in one giant pot. They still have some crispy leaves, but they have their own humidifier and I quite literally worship the ground they grow in. I absolutely adore them and pictures truly never do the silvery green leaves justice. If you have a chance to get one take it. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have found so many of them locally, in relatively good condition, and for such a low price. They are hands down in my top three favorite house plans.

I'm so blessed to be born in a tropical country, where I can get all these "rare" Calatheas easily for a very, very cheap price. And it's so easy to take care of them as well! My family influenced me on my fondness of Chinese Evergreen but my first love was Calathea Ornata. I seriously want to collect all Calatheas they're too beautiful

I got one too and it's one of my fav Calathea's, out of my 15+ collection :)
How do you care for it? I have one for almost a year now and it is the most difficult plant to take care of. I have a lot of brown/yellow spots on the leaves and I had to cut off a lot of them. It got to a point where I had like 1/4 of the original plant left, so I put a bowl with water underneath (for higher humidity) and I only water it with filtered water. It started to push new foliage afterwards but the spots are still there. No other calathea I have is so demanding.
But I love it so much I'm not willing to give up on it just yet :)
@@KasumiKingfisher I wish I knew! Mine too has been a pain to take care of. Several times over the past year I have cut it back and started over. I live in Florida so heat and humidity are not the cause if its demise. It constantly grows new leaves, it just never looks pretty.

I bought one calathea (freddie) on a whim, and just a couple months later, I now have a beauty star, ornata, fusion white, and makoyana. Still not even sure I can keep them happy in the long run re: humidity!
If you don't mind me asking, where did you buy your plants?? I go to many different plant shops and they always have generic plants... :(

It’s interesting that I got my calathea pinstripe, rattlesnake and warscewiczii from Lowe’s. I did not see those plants at either of two plant nurseries where I get plants.

This is so useful! When I see something new pop up at the nursery it's so helpful to know if it's relatively common and likely to pop up again or more rare and something worth snagging while it's available. I'd love to see this for peperomias or hoyas!

Today I touched a Calathea Warscewiczii and now I can't stop thinking about it. Am probably gonna dedicated a section of the house to just them calatheas. 😂 Love love love your Rare Plant Index series. Thank you for making them as you make me realise how blessed I am to be living here in Singapore and these very rare, extremely rare (like the Lutea lines the estate my apartment is part of) are quite common here. Update. Now I own a Calathea Elliptica Vittata, Calathea Musaica, Calathea Orbifolia, Calathea Sanderiana (Pink Ornata), Calathea Beauty Star and adopted a baby Calathea Warscewiczii! They sit together with my Stromanthe Triostar and Magicstar! 😂 My calathea collection has gone BOOMZ! In two months.

Another great vid and well-researched. I discovered the pronunciation is Var-sew-vit-see-eye. I call mine wishywashyeye. It's hard to stop touching it. Beautiful white flowers. The white fusion is definitely high maintenance. I moved mine closer to the humidifier and the window and it's doing much better. Your white star is beautiful...it's on my wish list. But it is behind the musaica. I don't know if I'll ever see that in my local nurseries. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge!

About the pronunciation, a good trick is to put the latin names in Google Translate and set it to Italian to check how they sound. We have the same sounds of latin (mostly), hence you'll get a pretty close pronunciation.
For example, when you see the syllable "sci" (like in faSCIata), the sound to make is the same sound in the middle of the word "faSHion". So the correct pronounciation would be like "faSHiata" (sci = sh).
Btw Fasciata means stripped or "bandaged" (in the sense of covered by wide stripes) both in Italian and in Latin. :)
Other examples: carnosa (like in Hoya carnosa) means plumped/meaty/succulent in both in Italian and Latin. Zebrina (like in Alocasia zebrina) in both languages means stripped like a zebra. Leopardina (like Calathea leopardina) means stripped like a leopard. Pavonii or pavonina means the plant has a pattern similar to peacock feathers. Cupra means colored with dark red. Picta means painted. And so on...
In general, in botanical Latin the names always have something to do with the look of the plant or with the name of the botanist who categorized the plant (like in Hoya hoffmannii, from Hoffmann).

I am full on obsessed with Calathea and the way that their leaves move all day.
I bought a Calathea majestica a few weeks ago, i love it! The first evening it scared the bleep out of me, the leaves looked completely lifeless. I gave it some roomtemperature rainwater hoping it would recouperate. The next morning i was pleasantly surprised the leaves stood up straight. Later on that day i learned by googling about it that it's common for calathea's to move their leaves during the day. Really fascinating! It's thriving, i must do something good, 😁

When you watch a banana tree stam, you can see, that these are much thicker, than on your image. And every leaf, comes out of one stam. Greatings from germany :)

I have a Calathea Rotundifolia it reminds me of my orbifolia with just darker leaves. Very accurate description!! Has the same shaped leaves as well.
I absolutely adore calatheas! I bought and received my first one recently, a lovely White Fusion... admittedly it was in rough shape after being shipped to me, but it bouncing back with some tlc. Makes me feel like if I can get it looking beautiful again, I could take care of any other calathea lol. I'll be moving in a few months, so hesitant to get any new ones till then, but this list has got me wanting /several/ to keep mine company. Whoops.
Found your video researching calathea, mosaics specifically as I was at a greenhouse today and they have a table of them and thought it was so awesome looking. Might have to give it a try
I have the calathea lutea and I often forget that it’s a calathea except when it “prays” it like a lot of sun and where I love, thrives in direct sun, it grows super tall 3-4m and the backs of new leaves feel a little velvety but yeah such a weird calathea, it doesn’t look like a calathea and like very different light to a calathea 🙂

14:00 "it looks like a banana tree" Definitely does! In Indonesia they call it Banana tree ornament tree, I didn't know it's a calathea! If you google "tanaman pisang hias", you'll see it has red&yellow flowers/fruits(?)!
Those are members of the Heliconia genus, which is from the banana family, Musaceae. Calatheas are from Marantaceae, the Maranta family.
And their flowers are vastly different.

I have 3 plants from this list. The calathea crocata ‘candela’ that I have, have much darker leaves. The flowers last min. 4 months. I have to say, out of all calatheas that I have the leopardina is the easiest to care for. Grows and flowers in low light and has close to no brown tips. Love this video and the list of plants you assembled.
Thanks for the education Kaylee! I always thought I had an Ornata but I definitely have a Beauty Star! I thought mine just looked a little off (not hard to assume when calathea are so fussy!). Although I wish I had an Ornata! Love the deeper green.

I've had my white fusion for a couple months now. Shes been doing good but definatley fussy! Been trying different light patterns, about 6 hours of partial/full sun 3 times a week and shaded north facing window for the rest of it and shes happy. Leaves are really susceptible to chemical damage tho, and the soil likes to stay moist. Thin leaves that wither easily so it's important to prune and monitor. A beauty tho
The C. ornata looks stunning! C. lancifolia is my first (so far only) bought indoor plant and honestly still find it the most beautiful, rare or not :) glad you cleared the rattlesnake part up, I was confused because I just couldn't see the resemblance.
I love this series! I really do love aroids esp. the prayer plant family and alocasias and this video made me want to go on a rare plant hunt! My first calathea was a Zebrina and it is so soft to touch!
I loved it instantly and not knowing anything about it brought it home, researched it and I find it to be a easy plant to take care of instead of all the story's I read about it being a diva plant so I guess I'm a overprotective plant mom now 🤔😊
I have a Calathea White Fusion! They’re not too bad to take care of. I think the key is just accepting you might get some crispy edges on some of the whiter edges if you don’t have it in a terrarium. I live in Florida, so the humidity factor takes care of itself, but they’re just really sensitive to tap water, mostly. Definitely worth the marginal effort to see the beautiful leaves 💚

I have a white fusion calathea. It’s so pretty and delicate, the leaves are like tissue paper. I use distilled water and a grow light.
My white fusion is a D-I-V-A indeed. Filtered water is a must and I have 45-60% humidity and I still spray it. The nursery where I got it clearly didn't take great care of it, as I got it with tons of crispy edges, but new leaves are starting to look well. Hopefully I've got it down. It's small, but utterly gorgeous!

So happy that my bella and silver plate are in the extremely rare category 😁 I hope Kaylee have these plants now they are so so pretty and on the more easier side. Calathea lutea is also super common in Indonesia, most people use it as aesthetic purpose for their outdoor area and so many people hate then eventually remove the plant because it attracts mealybugs a lot!
I just bought a calathea white star on sale for 8€/9$! I admired yours in the back, while watching the video and was surprised to see it be listed in the very rare section. I'm glad I made such a steal 😍 she's 55cm tall. I can't wait for her to arrive ❤
I recently got a little calathea amabilis, and honestly I would recommend one to any first time calathea owners! It's sometimes listed as a stromanthe or maranta amabilis, or a fishbone calathea (I think anyway!). The ambient humidity of the UK is enough for it to thrive, and it's throwing out new leaves almost daily! I have a magic star as well, and my amabilis has been so much more low maintenance - plus it was only £3.95 for a 6cm pot 😍
I got a musaica!! First one I've ever seen in person and I walked away from it after convincing myself I shouldn't... Then I promptly and frantically emailed the plant shop the next day to see if there was any chance it was still in, and it was, so I went back 😁 worth it
Kaylee I love your videos! Lately I've been stopping at our local greenhouse because winter here has been cold and very snowy and I can go where its warm and green for a few minutes and trick myself into thinking winter is gone. Anyway, I've been drawn to a white fusion calathea and now if they still have any when I get back there I'm definitely going to get it!

I have a calathea white fusion and it's gorgeous! However, I had to buy a cloche to keep it happy. It kept dropping leaves within the first few months of me buying it, and even sitting it right next to a humidifier didn't keep it happy. However, once I put the cloche over it, it grew and unfurled 2 new leaves within a couple of months and is much, much happier. Having the cloche is nice as well because it keeps the soil damp for so long, so I don't have to water nearly as often as my other calatheas. Gorgeous plant, for sure! But you definitely have to be willing to put in the work to keep it happy.
I love this series! Really educational and entertaining. But since i'm kind of "new" to the hobby of plants, one thing i realized is that i'm not always sure of what the common plants are, like I now know what the rarer philodendrons and calatheas look like, but I have close to no idea what is considered the common ones. I had never heard the term of calatheas before watching your videos, so I am totally clueless. Would love some quick examples of the commons just as a quick referens or reminder. Thank you for these videos.

This is really interesting because the plants in most of your videos here in NZ we can't get any of them or they're like $1000+ but most of these calathea we have in every store here like the ornata, zebrina, vittata, roseopicta corona and orbifolia! So interesting!

I have 2 calathea makoyana & lancifolia. My makoyana is so easy and producing so many new leaves for me, compared to the lancifolia who is refusing to do anything 🙄🙄
I got a white fusion for $20 here in Canada and she's doing great! Had a spider mite outbreak and only she came out unharmed as well. She just likes humidity and does great with a daily spritz of water.
