The Vekoma Flying Dutchman: Is the End Near?

- Created in 2000, the Flying Dutchman model is one of the most unique roller coasters ever created. With only three ever built, two of which were relocated, how much time is left before we'll no longer be able to ride one? Join me as I give a brief history of all the existing Flying Dutchmen, and speculate on how much longer they will be operating.

Sorry it took so long for me to get this video out! I've been dealing with a back to back flu and laryngitis this past week, and you know I kinda need my voice to narrate these videos. Anyway, I'm not dead, so let's talk about the Vekoma Flying Dutchman!
Also, this is my first video edited in Adobe Premiere! How'd I do?
Looks great! Ive been tempted to traverse into the Adobe realm, only time will tell if I decide to take the plunge!
Your production quality has improved so much over the years
Thanks so much, that means a lot!
I rode Stealth as a kid, I was barely tall enough to ride it at the time. I only got to ride it once as the ride was constantly breaking down. I remember really liking the ride as the time and thinking it was the best ride in the park. I never rode any of the other Vekoma models though, but I love B&M flyers.
Honestly, I hate to think about this model going defunct. I had the pleasure of riding all three, and I prefer them over B&M flyers because of how unique and forceful they are. It's really a shame more of them weren't constructed
I compared Batwing to the most recent B&M flyer I've ridden which was Manta at SeaWorld Orlando, and although I find Manta to be smoother overall, Batwing was much more intense. The only part of Manta that comes close is its pretzel loop.
For the record both KD and KI were originally going to receive Flying Dutchmen but because of the problems Stealth had, Paramount sold them both to Six Flags at a discount. That's why they were placed at Six Flags America and Six Flags Worlds of Adventure/Geauga Lake, since they were the closest SF parks to KD/KI.
It's always a good time when rampaging Rex is on the scene
Batwing > Superman UF 🤭
Also don’t forget FLY! It’s coming soon- new Vekoma Flyer!
I was on the very last train on fire hawk and it was very bitter sweet. Personally love the model and have been on two of the three. All good things must come to an end.
I sadly never got to ride Firehawk, I was a year too late when I finally made my way to Kings Island. I did get to see it in 2001 as X-Flight at SFWOA, but I was way too short to ride.
I rode Batwing over the summer and it was freaking intense! My face hurt after. But the one train ops were terrible and going up that lift hill rivals an RMC in loudness. I hope at least one of these stick around a while longer though.
how do u only have 7k subs
I haven't been in maybe 7-8 years but I always really enjoyed batwing. Honestly that ride is solidly in my top 20, maybe 15. Was never rough and such a unique sensation with the loose vests, b&m flyers can't provide that. I really hope that ride sticks around and six flags keeps it maintained and running regularly. Nighthawk on the other hand I've given many chances and it's solidly one of my least favorite rides ever. The constant 2 hour lines when everything else isn't even 15 minutes doesn't help either.
When I rode Batwing for the first time, I was bracing myself for the worst, but I ended up really enjoying it. Sure there were some rough spots but it wasn't bad at all. I haven't ridden Nighthawk but I'd like to get to Carowinds within the next year or so.
If you go to Cedar Fair’s website, under Carowinds, it states Nighthawk as a popular coaster there. It didn’t mention CS, Intimidator, or Fury.
Happy I got on Batwing today, getting on Nighthawk soon
Mr Krabs:It's the real flying dutchman! Vakoma:You were expecting maybe a Hyper Coaster?
It wouldn't surprise me if Nighthawk is the next to go at Carowinds in the next few years. The ride has become progressively rougher over the last few years, As a Carowinds passholder, I usually only ride it if there's little to no line. The load/unload time takes forever, meaning you sit in the hot Carolina sun in that brake run for way too long lol. It's a shame the ride isn't nearly as smooth as it once was, because it's a fun ride. But it's painfully rough these days! I've also ridden Batwing years ago, so at least I can say I've been on the last two remaining of these.
Grayed out on the Batwing’s loop!!
I rode Firehawk during its last year. It was a fun ride and surprisingly smooth for a Vekoma. I haven’t ridden either of the other two yet. (I live on the west coast and airfare to the east coast is expensive.)
I've heard that Firehawk and Batwing are actually pretty good rides for older Vekoma coasters using the Arrow track design. I would love to ride one of these, since I have heard they are very intense rides, but sadly, it seems that this ride model is not going to last any longer. I mean Vekoma stopped making parts for this model, and we can't forget about B&M's take on the flying coaster. I have heard nothing but this ride just being extremely painful to maintain, since it's such a complicated design that lends itself to unreliability most of the time. Idk how much longer Batwing is going to last, since again it has a lot of downtime and the maintenance is hard to do, since Vekoma can't even make spare parts for this ride. At least Nighhawk has spare parts from Firehawk to last I guess a few more years, but again, you can only maintain this for so long using parts from a defunct coaster. This model probably had to use a lot of spare parts that were crucial, especially for the trains. I mean many of the Arrow coasters have S&S to support them to provide spare parts since S&S did acquire many of Arrow's assets, so Arrow Dynamics' coasters are much more likely to stay around much more longer. But with these Vekoma Flying Dutchmans, not as much.
I'm low-key nervous to ride one of these at Carowinds. I heard the shoulder restraints feel kinda scary. (I know it's safe tho lol)
They do give more freedom of movement than the B&M flying coasters, but I still felt locked into place while riding. The Vekoma restraints are much more flexible.
@@RampagingRex To quote XscreamThrills, "The way you're laying down when the train flips you onto your stomach, all your body weight is sent to your shoulders, and the flimsy feeling straps doesn't seem secure to me - which hindered me from enjoying Firehawk as much as I should. Yes, I know the straps are safe, but a better version would've allowed me to enjoy the roller coaster so much more." I'll prob still ride Nighthawk anyway lol, and thanks for the quick reply :)
Surprised no mention of FLY. Vekoma's third attempt at a flying coaster. This time it's a flying launch coaster!
I honestly forgot that FLY was even happening! I heard one mention of it earlier this year and nothing since. Sorry about that.
Whats the intro music?
Mega Man X7- Conflict (Escape Stage)
Hopefully so.
Batwing at Six Flags America has a shitload of downtime, a not so comfortable ride and maintenance dreads working on it
What is your favorite coaster and what is your worst coaster
My #1 is Phantom's Revenge. My least favorite has always been the original Mean Streak at Cedar Point. It was incredibly painful and I'm glad they RMC'd it.
I'm just going to say this, fuk roller coaster. Do video game history and unknown video game products. Old video game history is a sweet topic and you did that last GameCube video perfectly. Keep going with that and you will have 100k subs in no time 😁😁😁
Yea I saw that. I also saw trains for a B&M dive as well
Dutchman over B&M Flyers!!
I've ridden a flying dutchman; it Beat me up but damn it I'd be lying if I Said it was forgettable.
I’m really not a big fan of Vekoma’s SLCs. The layouts are pretty much the same with nothing new.
nighthawk opened october 7th and running great so vekoma not going anywhere
