  • Star Trek's 55th anniversary is this month, and accompanying that milestone is the just-released 4K Ultra HD Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection. And to help celebrate the occasion, IGN's own Star Trek aficionado Scott Collura interviewed William Shatner himself!
    In this William Shatner interview, which you can watch at the top of the page or below, Shatner discusses the making of the first four Star Trek movies -- as well as Star Trek V, which he directed and is sure to be on the next 4K set. From the convoluted development of Star Trek: The Motion Picture to bringing Kirk into a middle-aged funk in The Wrath of Khan to shooting the famous "double dumb-ass on you" scene in The Voyage Home, the star reveals lots of fun behind-the-scenes tidbits from the beloved franchise.
    As for the Blu-rays, Star Trek's 55th anniversary marks the first time that the original four Star Trek films are presented in not only 4K Ultra HD, but with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 as well. Each film -- Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek: III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek: IV: The Voyage Home -- comes packaged with "hours of previously released bonus content."
    This content includes commentary, deleted scenes, storyboards, trailers, production videos like "Designing Khan" and interviews with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, and more.
    This Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection, which is available now, also comes packaged with standard Blu-rays and digital copies of each film. For those without 4K TVs or players, there is also a version that just includes the Blu-ray discs and digital copies.

      @Hibernicus1968 3 года назад +15

      Yeah, he actually looks younger than Patrick Stewart, who played a Starfleet captain _twenty years_ after Shatner first played Kirk, and is a decade younger in real life. His voice has held up better too. When you hear Stewart speak, his voice has that scratchiness to it that tells you the speaker is older. Happened to Nimoy too, and you could hear it in the later movies where he played Spock. Shatner, on the other hand, still sounds pretty much like he always did, and if he voiced Kirk in an animated Star Trek feature, you wouldn't be able to tell he's old.

    I love STAR TREK - THE MOTION PICTURE! During the lounge scene, there's a flash of anger in Kirk's eyes when Spock says "Of Course, Captain". It's so tiny, many people might not even see it, but it's Shatner at his very best (in my opinion). My favourite Kirk moment in my favourite Trek film!

    • @mikephillips8810
      @mikephillips8810 3 года назад +2

      Yes fearless! You may already know this story...
      ...in one of Leonard Nimoy's books he describes a moment where he and Shatner were reading the script for one of the episodes in the third and final season/series. Some of those scripts they didn't like as moving too far away from ST norms. This one had Kirk's mind taken over by a woman. Nimoy noted that the script was weak and not right. Shatner said "well, that's what we've been given. And I'm going to attack it!" meaning of course, do the scene, with gusto!

      I'm not sure that CBS are trying to kill it but they are certainly morphing it into something which goes completely against Gene Roddenberry's original ideas and plans for the Star Trek universe. CBS seem to want to make it appeal to the masses (who seem to be finding the new stuff forgettable popcorn TV) but at the same time are losing many of the original Star Trek fans. There's been some totally unsuitable people in charge of Star Trek for the past few years but you also need to look at those who hired them because they too are partly responsible for the mess that it's in right now.

    Burning the sets instead of selling them to the fans or collectors for charities that the cast love ... 🤔🤦

    Great interview but he is wrong about one thing. The sets were never taken down after TMP they used them all the way till they finished Generations.

    ST the Motion Picture was a bit weird, but sort of made sense in the way of a machine intelligence that is sort of deciding to wipe out Earth or not, and decided not to. Not too many people would understand. Spock does diplomatics. Computers are impressive fast execution devices that can gather approximate audio visual data and transmit it to other computers. It involves charge sensing, usb protocol, internet protocol, compression, audio analog to digital conversion, vice versa, and etc...

    WRT "My character wouldn't do that".
    Shatner claims here that this phrase never left his mouth. However, this is the same Shatner who, when asked to say "Let them die" about the death of Klingons in Star Trek 6 said "My character wouldn't do that". He's even been interviewed saying how he fought against Kirk saying this line.
