Years ago when I lived in the area I would grab a cup of Old Fisherman's Grotto Clam Chowder and a sourdough roll and go sit on the beach and enjoy. It's a core memory.
Uh-mazing!! We honestly did not eat chowder for 6 months after this day😂. Just found out about friend worked at Schooners and he was loving this video! He said he did the same thing with the fisherman’s chowder! It’s time that we go back to Monterey!

My wife and I are from the Monterey area, but moved away over 20 years ago. Any time we're in town visiting family, we make it a point to get chowder at Old Fisherman's Grotto and it never disappoints. Their recipe is online, but no matter what I've done to fine tune the recipe, it just doesn't turn out the same. Glad you guys enjoyed it as well!
We are gonna try to make it for sure! We ate so much chowder that trip we didn’t have any for almost a year😂. We are back in the white stuff now!

Sandbar is on the municipal wharf. Fisherman’s wharf is the next one over. Heading back to Monterey in 2 weeks. Lived there for 2 years in the ear;y 90’s. Great video!

I lived in Monterey..the first place I’m sure Clint Eastwood filmed a scene there in play misty for me. Grotto was my go too, very consistent too

Before it was the sandbar it was the wind jammer where Clint filmed play misty,they used to slide back the roof ontil people got seagull crap on there dish .
Somebody had mentioned this to us, it was a little before our time but we looked it up and he sat in our EXACT booth! My dad was so excited to learn this!

We usually go to Monterey every month at least once. But we haven't for a couple of months.
It took us sooo long to get out of California because it is just so awesome.
FYI, you don't have to pay for parking in the lot at Fisherman's Wharf if it's under 15 minutes (or at least that's how it used to be). So sometimes I'd drive in, park, get Grotto's clam chowder at the outdoor counter and leave; take it and enjoy it at one of the beaches in Carmel or Big Sur.

Does the sandbar need a reservation?
We weren’t there on a weekend or a peak summer day but you would probably be fine just to walk in! We also learned that Clint Eastwood filmed a scene in our booth!
What about the fishermen grotto do they take reservations or just walk in?
Is there a parking around here
There are parking lots but they can be pretty expensive. There is free parking around Vivolos and they had amazing chowder!
Parking is tight on weekends..no problem weekdays
I will take good chowder over good audio any day
Hahahah we were so bummed when we got back to edit that video. The good news is we have recovered from over-chowdering and are capable of enjoying it once again!
