    The AV8B Harrier II Plus is a beautiful aircraft, I want it to remain operational for many decades to come, and never need to be replaced unnecessarily.

    The AV 8As were the real “widow makers”. I was at Cherry Pt 77-81 with 223 when they were A-4s. A number of Harriers went down at that time. Its my understanding that the B models were safer and the accident rate dropped off. The Harrier was one of my favorite birds to watch.

    It should be noted the name on that first jet is Lt Col Chris “Otis” Raible. A legend in the Marine Corp and the CO of VMA-211. Read his story. The epitome of “every Marine a rifleman.” This video has to be at least 10 years old or the squadron kept his name on a jet if it’s more recent. RIP and Semper Fi!!

    You have to take your hat off to the Men that fly this airplane. It is more complex than any other airplane. Yet they've achieved a 94% readiness rate they, were a critical weapon system, and they've won numerous awards.

    Love listening to the people in the background:
    Those missiles are blue because they're training missiles.
    Yes they're taxiing slow because this isn't flight simulator where people taxi at 60 knots!

    The Harrier is rapidly becoming my favorite airplane.
    The sound of that Pegasus engine.
    Did you see that take off? The nose didn't even come up.

    • @sebkuip
      @sebkuip 4 года назад

      That sound is just horrible imo. The whine hurts when you need to listen to it for longer times. I also play DCS world where the harrier is implemented and you often hear that whine sitting next to you. So it’s almost an unwritten rule to shut down your harrier when landed

    This magnificent aircraft in fact still have lots more potential as a very useful ground support bomber, if givn the added benefit of some computer assisted vertical hover/lift - active balancing sub-nozzle feature intended for doing-away with the notorious moniker of being one of those "widow-maker" equipment.
    Way I see it, this aircraft's phasing-out was simply the evolutionary process of make way for the -35s' induction. Then again, for since the Harriers were made from using the regular metal materials, they were prone to corrosion on especially those units that served on USN's LHD type aircraft-carriers. The F-35s on the other hand, were done with the more accepted active application of to-date carbon composites that are not vulnerable to rusting.

    The bombs painted on the side are the ones we dropped in Iraq in 2003 when we deployed to Iraq on the USS Kearsarge.

    It is a shame that the Harrier couldn't have been upgraded with the many years of service. Yes it has quirks that could have been smoothed out for the better.

    • @P90F55
      @P90F55 5 лет назад +1

      What quirks? It had a 93 to 94% Readiness rate in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. It was one of General Norman Schwarzkopf top 7 Weapons Systems. The Black Sheep won top Marine Corps attack Squadron four times with the Harrier.
      It got a bad rap from the fake media. No one took into consideration how much time is spent in takeoff and landing which is the most dangerous part of flight for any airplane.

    • @ricardosoto5770
      @ricardosoto5770 5 лет назад +2

      It got a raised bubble canopy, a glass cockpit, a new wing, souped up engine, FLIR, laser designators, a multimode planar array radar. They did improved the Harrier over the 50 years long career.

      @@P90F55 I love the Harrier but it had its share of problems other than the VTOL portions of flight. The Pegasus engine wasn't very reliable and engine failures forced a lot of guys to eject. Furthermore, the ejection seat in the Harrier up until the late 90s was very flawed and guys were getting killed while ejecting. Once again, I think its an amazing badass machine, I'd love to fly it when I commission, but I'll admit it certainly had its flaws and has had a higher fatality rate than the F-18 or F-16

      Obama furled 513's colors in 7/13 at Yuma. But a new Flying Nightmares [w/F-35Bs] was formed at MCAS Beaufort SC as VMAT-502. But they can't have the old Squadron motto of "Damn the Bad Luck" without a 13 in their number. I was also with VMAT-203 at CPNC in '75. Light duty... but we did have some TA-4J 2-seaters w/20mm guns. Until the TAV8As. Semper Fi, Brother.
