The only plane in the world that flys up, down, forwards, backwards, sideways, can spin on its own axis and land on anything big enough to accommodate its wingspan. Beautiful old girl 🥰
I remember watching a Harrier in Biggin Hill air show in 1986. The airfield was wet after heavy rain and while hovering the jet started to boil the water over the concrete.
Didnt need speed to beat the quicker planes in the Falklands war back in the 80s, just its other advantages it has and the greater skill of the pilots flying them.
About 40 years ago, maybe less or more there was a race of the U.K. Harrier and a top USA war plane from London to New York. The agreement was that thi pilots had to get to a building and deliver a message to the heads of State. The Harrier was the winner by far as the Harrier had a helicopter pad to land on
Similar story back in the 80s where a Harrier squadron was used to transport packages over enemy land farther than its fuel tanks would allow, technically it could do it because it didnt need to pitstop at an airbase, all it needed was to refuel at any friendly base with a 200yard footpath (or a helipad) to get up with full tanks and munitions.

An utterly awesome airframe, genious design
I saw my 1st harrier at an airshow at stewart airport in New York. The demo was amazing!
Love that harrier!

So pleased the US keep the English designs up in the air!!
McDonnell Douglas did a bang up job fixing most of the design flaws in the original when they produced the AV-8B.

"Princess?" I reckon he musta lost a bet. Or is so badass he can have that and it not matter.
This is an awesome plane. If it has more speed it will be more respected in the sky.

Me gusta más el jarri av8b que el elf35 en su forma de despegue y aterrizaje vertical es más completo y se mantiene más estable
Without the 20-odd Sea Harrier versions of this beauty, UK would have lost the Falklands War
fantastico

very cool
Best combat aircraft ever. Such a shame the RAF and RN no longer have them.
They got alot of good use out of them since the 80s, they had to retire one day unfortunately.
