I was privileged to be a USMC Officer Candidate in June 1972 attending OCS training at Quantico, VA when as part of that training it included a performance for us aviator destined types by the Chief Pilot of Hawker Siddeley demonstrating the AV-8A Harrier. The demonstration not only included showing the Harrier's amazing agility, but the PA system on the field was linked to the pilot who in his great British accent described every action he was taking in pulling off each maneuver. He had 100 USMC Officer candidates going crazy with excitement watching that incredible show.

@@delten-eleven1910 "UK invented this unique jet!"(sic)
With a lot of help - both financial and technical - from the MWDP - particularly the United States - as Rowland White points out in his book Harrier 809. The UK ended up being a subcontractor on the Harrier II having abandoned the project from 1975-1981.
“Without American support, it’s entirely possible there’d never even have been a Harrier; at least not one that existed beyond the confines of Ralph Hooper’s sketchbook. As early as 1959, NASA saw enough potential in the embryonic British jump jet design to provide encouraging technical reports. And while the Hawker board might have sanctioned building two P.1127 prototypes without any official backing, it was American money from an organization called the Mutual Weapons Development Program based in Paris - a sort of military start-up incubator - that largely financed the construction of the expensive BE.53 Pegasus engines on which flying prototypes were dependent. Indeed it was the same agency that had introduced Sir Stanley Hooker to Michel Wibault’s Gyroptere in the first place. Such was the lack of British government interest or support that one senior USAF General was sure that without intervention ‘an all British P.1127 would die a natural death - it would just wither away.’ And so the Pentagon proposed the creation of a multinational squadron to conduct a series of trials using a development of the P.1127 known as the Kestrel.” Harrier 809, Rowland White, pg. 75

Heavens.. I've been watching Harriers since 1978, both AV-8A's and AV-8B's. Amazing that they are still flying, but I'd assumed they were retired once the F-35B was serving in a lot of squadrons. It's nice to be wrong now and then. 😀

The Harrier is a very interesting jet! It looks like the USMC is looking on replacing their Harrier fleet with the F-35B in the near future, so enjoy the time this thing is still flying

They have been replacing them with the F-35B for a while now. VMA-231 will be the last squadron to sunset the Harrier before transitioning over to the Lightning II.

I sure hope not the AV-8B Harrier can still do a heck of a lot more than what most people might think. It can mess a lot of things up if it had to be put into combat. No one would want to mess with it at all 💯 percent guaranteed. It's truly a legendary aircraft without a doubt. Besides the F-35B there's no other aircraft out there that can relate. It's also an iconic aircraft. It does things people thought weren't possible for an aircraft to ever do. Can you imagine what it can do with upgrades.

its applying maximum power with zero air speed into the intake so the engine is starved of air causing some unburned fuel.
