  • The AV-8B Harrier II was developed by a team comprised of McDonnell Douglas, British Aerospace, and Rolls-Royce. Back in the 90s this aircraft cost almost 30 million dollars. Or, 7 million Pepsi points! It was based on the 1957 British-designed Hawker-Siddley Kestrel and went through a series of extensive upgrades. This aircraft is from the first V/STOL fighter jet family. And even though it is subsonic and not designed as a fighter, the 1st generation of this aircraft saw dogfight action during the Falkland War and held its own against Argentine’s Mirage jet fighters. U.S. Army General Norman Schwarzkopf named this aircraft as one of several important weapons in the Gulf War. The Harrier II is the first combat aircraft to employ composite materials extensively. With the help of the its unique nozzles Harrier II can perform a special air maneuvre called VIFF’ing that is making radically tight, controlled turns. The Harriers were supposed to be retired, but the F-35's delays and a review that not only altered how the Marines used the Harrier but also revealed that the airframes still had a lot more flight time in them than had been previously believed gave them a second chance.

This video really understates the incredible British engineering that made this possible. The fundamental technology was decades ahead of anything else.

The Brits abandoned work on the Harrier II from 1975 - 1981 due to lack of money. They returned after McDonnell Douglas had completed the overwhelming majority of the redesign and political forces had changed in the UK.

Italy did an upgrade to their Harrier fleet, they are now fully 4 gen. aircraft, stronger engine, new Radar and weapon systems and heavy carry capacity. Australia should have done the same, much cheaper as the F35

Eh...The British invented this aircraft and it did a fine job in the Falklands 1982.. it was upgraded by Mcdonnel Douglas.....The Martin B57 was also an upgrade of the Canberra Bomber ( another British Aircraft) Also of note is the P51 Mustang..it only became worthy of its name after the insertion of a British designed ( but improved ) Rolls Royce Merlin Engine.

It didnt "hold its own" against the Arge Mirage and Skyhawks, it OBLITERATED them. It also took on F5`s piloted by American "Aggressor" squadron pilots and obliterated them, it then took on American F15`s and wiped the floor with them as well. See Sharky Wards "Sea Harrier Over The Falklands" book or audiobook.
