The Brits abandoned work on the Harrier II from 1975 - 1981 due to lack of money. They returned after McDonnell Douglas had completed the overwhelming majority of the redesign and political forces had changed in the UK.
Italy did an upgrade to their Harrier fleet, they are now fully 4 gen. aircraft, stronger engine, new Radar and weapon systems and heavy carry capacity. Australia should have done the same, much cheaper as the F35
This video really understates the incredible British engineering that made this possible. The fundamental technology was decades ahead of anything else.
It also was prominently featured in "Transformers: Bumblebee." One of the movie's two villains, Decepticon Shatter, transformed into a Harrier as well as a muscle car.
RIP AV-8B. I'll miss that high pitch turbo fan sound when you hear that bird turning up and watching them fly in out of cherry point. They will be adversary trainers for a long time.
@ 2:47 wow, I've always seen the Harrier do vertical takeoffs very slow and carefully. I didn't know they could launch themselves up to hundreds of feet in seconds... Imagine a group of Vtol F-35's launching upwards out of a forest, that would be crazy!
I wonder what would happen if the Pegasus was upgraded to a counter-rotating turbine set up(the Vulcan bomber has counter-rotating turbine engines,) along with a more stealthy configuration?
@@mariosailas390 Okay. If you say so. Unless they have been completely Replaced By the F-35B. VTOL, there were still AV-8B HarrierII VTOL Squadrons stationed at MCAS Miramar
Eh...The British invented this aircraft and it did a fine job in the Falklands 1982.. it was upgraded by Mcdonnel Douglas.....The Martin B57 was also an upgrade of the Canberra Bomber ( another British Aircraft) Also of note is the P51 Mustang..it only became worthy of its name after the insertion of a British designed ( but improved ) Rolls Royce Merlin Engine.

1982 Falklands War UK was already using the Sea Harrier and Harrier fully operational ..in action .. !!??

Britain has always boasted of advanced engineering technology. It was similar to Germany after Hitler invested in engineering.
I saw it the first time in my favorite PS2 game Metal Gear Solid 2

US-based startup claims its VTOL will have Mach 0.66 cruise speed and over 11,000 miles of range.
