I saw a Harrier Jump Jet at an airshow in the U.K. when I was a kid. It was brilliant, it hovered, moved sideways, backwards , turned a 360 on the spot, bowed to the crowd then pointed its nose to the sky and went straight up like a rocket. I’ll never forget that day.

Jack the lad except the first model British Harriers were fucking terrible, and more than half of the Marine Corps Hawker Siddeley AV-8A Harriers crashed. It wasn’t until McDonnell Douglas redesigned all the flaws out of the shitty British version that made the Harrier into the badass machine we know today

2 interesting facts about the V-22 Osprey:
1. The diameter of the two rotors is so large that they can't be tilted 90 degrees horizontally while the aircraft is on the ground, otherwise the blades would be touching the floor.
2. Either one of the turbine engines can drive both rotors via a driveshaft that stretches across the wing. So if one of the engines fails and can't power it's own rotor then the remaining engine can take over.

Honestly, I still have my doubts when it comes to the flight model. It feels too easy considering the Harrier is known as one of the most difficult planes to fly. I'm pretty sure the oscillations when in ground effect aren't modelled for example.

Little known fact: Yakovlev, the russian aircraft design company sold the designs for vtol to Lockheed Martin for the F-35. The plane that uses this design was an old soviet aircraft known as the Yakovlev Yak-38. Used thrust vectoring for the back two nozzles, and then had 2 smaller engines behind the cockpit for the forwards upwards thrust required for a vtol landing. The F-35 uses the same system, with a hatch opening above the forwards engine to allow airflow through it.
Not the case at all- the technology transfer happened, but how much of the _Yak-41_ specifially was used is arguably no more than studies of its flight envelope
The _F-35B_ uses a vertical thrust fan getting power from the engine, not two separate turbojets. Layout of the cold and hot thrusters are radically different. The three-section nozzle is very similar, but both get their origin from a Convair patent from the sixties.

Ashley Thomas Totally false, The Osprey did have a lot of early accidents but now it's currently one of the safest airframes in US service, it also has a larger range than helicopters while carrying more and being faster
The Osprey is almost as fast as the Fairey Rotodyne but not as good.

Your not even convincing yourself. It's a public issue that is regularly debated in MSM. There is no other progam in the US Armed Services that is a greater safety risk. (Unless you consider the actual Navy Officer class itself that has caused the 3+ major Naval collisions)
not sure why, and im pretty surprised but this almost moved me to tears... the sheer amount of passion and dedication required to make something so precise, so graceful... i dont think i have been this moved in a long time, and i think i want to become a pilot, this has pushed into wanted to pursue flight, and while i wont be able to fly a harrier, or an F-18, i would be happy with a J3 cub, or a Cessna, thank you Real Engineering, i doubt you'll see this but but for the first time in a long long time i feel inspired, and i can not thank you enough

My dad worked ordinance on Harriers. He was part of the team that tested the AV-8Bs, they gave his team a blank jet and they wired the weapon systems. He was also part of the team that tested the max takeoff weight. After the takeoff, the pilot came back and said "never load it up that much again." I start aviation maintenance school in the fall, and I dream to work on a harrier.

F-35 is effectively a flying military control room. It can monitor the 'battlefield' from afar, even firing missiles if necessary from afar, rather than engage in dog fight like combat that is better suited to more agile aircraft. Don't underestimate the power of a flying ARMED combat computer in today's world.

I've been a subscriber for a while and have enjoyed many of your videos. I was just watching a documentary on the Harrier jump-jet... I'm familiar with it but found myself confused with the nozzle placement. I couldn't find anything, well, I watched a crummy 1992 animation or something like that and then immediately yours popped up. Everything I wanted to know was explained in perfect detail along with history of how it got to that point proceeding that information. The thrust differential between the fronts and the rears was an issue I thought would have to be dealt with. Not only was my suspicion correct, as you immediately pointed out, you explained exactly how and why nozzle placement compensated for it. That's very satisfying, sir. Thank you!

My neighbor is an old F-4 Phantom pilot. He saw a little action in Vietnam. I keep telling him to write a book. He had his share of close calls and narrow escapes from MiGs.

As a kid, at Farnborough 1990 I had prime position when 3 Harriers were hovering along the runway in a display, maybe 80 meters in front of me. It was probably the loudest noise I have ever experienced in my life. I had my fingers in my ears, but you could feel it through your body.
Despite all it's shortcoming the F35 is still such an AMAZING piece of American Engineering. Incredible piece of labor.

it should be noted that not ALL F-35s will be able to vertical lift, just the specific F-35 B. the other two variants are just for air force specs (F-35A) and intended as a replacement only for the F-16, and theF-35 C which is suppose to replace the hornet F-18 A,B,C,D which are aged air frames, but won't replace the E and F models that are still quite useful by naval standards.
the thing you should note is that the air frames may be the same but the guts are being revamped.
During the Falklands War, Harriers of the Royal Navy were based on a few 'cargo' ships. That surprised the Argentinian Forces, and forced them to 'Recon' the Entire British Fleet, which, in turn, cost them a few much-needed aircraft (expensive Intel pics!).

@Real Engineering the F-35 IS in service, the B variant in particular (VTOL) has been IOC since 2015 and has undergone its first tactical forward deployed to Kadena Air Base, Japan, as of last year. The F-35A (USAF) has been IOC since 2016 and participated in its first red flag exercise 17-1 in which it scored 145 kills to 7 losses. The only variant yet to become 'in service' is the F-35C CATOBAR variant, which is slated to reach IOC this year.
This is for F-35A Block 3F since December 2017

The Crab 145 air to air kills against F-15C's and F-16's operating within their own integrated A2AD environment whilst also emplpying advanced ECM. The F-35's were also pitted against top teir SAM threats such as the Patriot site and even the USAF owned S-300 without being detected or shot down by either. I dont know what your opinion is on the aircraft but the fact is there is no other aircraft currently in service that can match it

The Crab The F35 aircraft themselves aren't that expensive, and the program cost is only 1.508 trillion through 2070, which in terms of government money is pocket change, and the Red Flag exercise isn't rigged because what's the point of that? It shows the flaws and benefits of every aircraft involved and other air forces participate in red flag, ranging from France and Israel to Pakistan

I feel that f 35 delays have something to do with the plane being outdated before its made, what I mean is the whole movement to eliminate the human factor from weaponry
the only problem is when the lack of a human factor leads to the machine uprising
Removing the human factor from weaponry isn't happening anytime soon. The levels of automation are increasing really fast though. Basically a F-35 will eventually fly with a drone escort improving its performance.
I just want Marvel's Quinjet to be a reality, a spacious airplane that can land and take off from anywhere, would be the perfect air caravan

I was lucky enough to see Sea Harriers land and disembark from the conning tower of HMS Invincible back in the mid nineties.
Got to Steam from Gibraltar back to Portsmouth, I was about 14 years old.

as a german, i'm disappointed you didnt mention the Dornier Do 31, the worlds largest VTOL. The apporoach was similar to the Harrier, with 2 Engines with 4 Outlets each mounted under the wings. Exept that this was not enough, so they decided to just brute-force it and attatched 8 Turbojets (4 on each wing) to the tip of the wing, mounted vertically, and only used for Takeoff and Landing. Naturally, this plane never got past the prototype phase, but is still interesting to look at and see how they managed to get 25 tons of plane into the air!
F35 A and B have both already become operational, and the C will likely reach operational status this year.
No mention of the brilliant British engineers who designed this plane or that the British were the first ones to have a truly effective VTOL fighter jet ??????

volcano hi Just want you to know that what you have said is complete rubbish. The UK didn’t abandon the Harrier project. The Harrier has been in continuous UK military service from ‘69 to 2011. The Uk didn’t scrap the project in ‘75, perhaps you missed the sea Harrier deployment in the Falklands war in 1982 (where the Harrier had a kill to death ratio of 21:0)? It’s just astounding to me that someone would imply the main Harrier innovation came from the USA.
I changed many AV8-A engines in the 70s and latter I became a Navy pilot. The exhaust nozzles are mechanically rotated by slightly larger motorcycle chain mechanism. Very simple. No computer at all..in those days.
Watching the Harrier literally bounce up and down on landing is kind of hilarious, but also alarming. It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a pogo stick!
F-35 has nothing in common with Harrier apart from vertical take off. The technical aspects of F-35 are more similar to Soviet Yak-38. Also, Harrier land version was CAS only aircraft as it lacked radar however sea harrier had radar and was designed to be launched from ski jump of the ships.
The Yak-41 is closer to the F-35 design, but it seems awfully similar to the Convair Model 200 concept.
The F-35 is only similar in appearance and VTOL thrust placement though, since it uses a driveshaft to spin a lift fan while the Yak all used two jet engines to achieve the same frontal lift.
@@ivanlagrossemoule One engine - this was to become the Yak-43, which was a development of the Yak-141. It was built only in the layout. And since the creators of the Yak and F-35 collaborated, they got access to the drawings.
@@user-xf7tm9nq3i the F-35 design has absolutely nothing to do with failed soviet prototypes. The only thing americans got out of the Yak-141 was the flight test data. Lockheed was funding the Yakolev project, which in turn was flying the prototype and giving data to Lockheed. By the time they did that, the X-35 was already being built.
@@lucastekkan There is some information on the Yak-43 on the Internet. Yes, of course, I believe that the Americans did the same thing themselves - a coincidence. And the Yak-141 was not unsuccessful, it was a complete project, and the best in the world at that time. Check the information before you speak. He did not go into the series, because at that moment the USSR collapsed, and the entire Russian aircraft industry received huge difficulties.

My sisters brother in law was a Harrier pilot. But his family was Bethsham Christians. I remember he went to my sisters wedding to his brother and he had cheap plastic shoes on, it turns out he gave so much of his wages to said church that he had very little money to himself. Strange people. But me being a 12 year old kid, I was in awe of him.
This tech for vertical lift and land was first seen in a cartoon named Swat Kats on the turbo cat in my childhood way before it was implemented in any fighter plane ... 😇✌️

Since you are telling lies, 6 ships sunk and 18 damaged, many of the damaged were not seriously damaged.
In air combat 3 Skyhawk, 9 Dagger and 1 Mirage, another Mirage damaged but later shot down by the Argentine army, that was by Sea Harrier pilots who sustained no losses in air combat.

I like to imitate different accents for fun and it always amazes me, these little quirks, that otherwise go unnoticed. For to accurately mimic an accent, you need to listen very acutely to every syllable, vowel and diphthongal glide.

over 200 A B & C variant jets flying with an approaching 150,000 hour flying time miles tone without crash ... the last generational leap in fighter tech, the F-16 saw over 500 jets lost in just the US Air Force from Mishaps & accidents .. and far too many pilots killed.
Congress, Senate & the pentagon, spent well over $100 BILLION in 'over budget' funding to try and fix it (the F-35A is just $4 Billion over budget) and many pilots just quit the USAF on learning they'd have to fly the "electric lawn dart".
The F-35 JSF programme suffered from mismanagement early on, but was fixed and made a responsible programme under the helm of Gen. Bogdan... who was solely responsible in the ridiculous 2nd engine programme being cancelled for the F-35 JSF... he knew and was familiar with the boondoggle of the F-16's 2nd engine, and knew that the JPO and the tax payer could not afford to be so reckless or wasteful with money, time & resources.
To date, the entire JSF (A, B & C) programme has 1 lost air frame due to gross human error, a fire consumed 3/4 of a jet after the ground crew chief twice signed off on having done the engine break-in period & tests, while NOT HAVING DONE SO ... in response, the JPO designated that P&W be responsible for all US inventory jet's engine break-ins, and a fix be made to prevent a fire if an engine be installed and run at full power without the break-in period again.
They're operating successfully overseas, despite a spare parts shortage (common in aviation programmes, the JSF is not unique there), and the technology is proven itself from tranche 2B to 3F in green flag, red flag, and the 'knight & entry exercises domestically.
having flown the B & A models since 2013 over the standard networked setup of Three PAC-3 air defense batteries without detection or simulated loss, INCLUDING the 2015 & 2016 PAC-3 test, utilizing the F-35B flight attached to RedFlag, with the PAC-3 operators directing the F-35B's (pair of 2 & singular) to fly how/when/where overhead.
During these exercises, the legacy F/A-18C/E, AV-8B, F-16CD, & A-10 suffer 2/3rds losses to simulated air defences & 98% detection rates.
In no survey group of the 'blue' ground forces, could they tell the difference between F-35B/A or Legacy Close-Air support fire missions. in any year. With the F-35A & B having flown 95.5% success rates in 'Flag exercises so far.

Should the JSF have occurred? dunno ... without a STOVL jet, the trillions of dollars in the USMC gator carrier fleet would have needed an entire war fighting doctorine rethink & change ... and they would have NEVER have gotten an independently developed jet.
... the fiscal costs of the F-35 ABC JSF programme & JPO are TRILLIONS less than the cost to change the force structure of the US Navy.... and the delay in the final operating service guise is FIVE DECADES FASTER than building new ships.
... so with everything, there's PRO's and CON's ... especially when creating a new generation & a never done before technology.... which, last time, resulted in the F-16 ... over 500 jets lost, too many pilots killed and $100 billion more than the F-35A in overbudget funding
Aleksander Lucy, Where are you sourcing your information about pilots quitting the service rather than fly the F-16? I'm curious because at the end of flight school when airframe assignments are first made all of the flight school candidates are committed to serve for 10 years as payback of their initial and advanced undergraduate pilot training. Is there a record of mass exodus at the end of the 10 year commitment that exit interviews attributed to the F-16 incident rate?

Despite the good stealth of the F-35, one Israeli F-35 was hit by an S-200 missile.
How is that possible?
N BOR without AWACS support, an F35 has to turn on its own radar sensors, which is like turning on a big beacon for anything with a passive radar system. The trillions of dollars of stealth make it a bit of a pig in the sky compared to some gen 4 fighters too, French Rafales beat F35 (or F22 I can’t remember) at Red Flag training exercise quite a few times a think. The US have stopped inviting them now...
Stealth isn't invisibility. It's more like camouflage.

I feel like VTOL aircraft are the future of aviation, as they don't need a big area for takeoff and landing, meaning in military terms they can deploy from almost anywhere. Hide one in a barn, then just roll it out on the field and takeoff. It would render airfield bombing almost obsolete. But what would have been a huge and impressive development would be big aircraft (Like transport planes) able to VTOL.
I don't know if he said it in real life, but I love Neil's quote after ejecting from the VTOL tester in First Man - "We need to fail down here so we don't fail up there."
