I got 4 bedrooms, 2 of which are just storage of clutter to the point where you can barely walk into one of them. Yesterday I decided to do a 1 hour better session and guess what!! My less cluttered room is fully cleaned and organised now! Threw away a huge bag of trash. I am soo happy, cannot wait to tackle the other room in the days coming. I know that will be much harder and longer process but the happiness the first rooms cleanliness gave me just motivates me to get this done! Thank you Dana, lifesaver!

My mother died in April of 2023, and I'm still going through her things, and she was a literal minimalist! Anyway, I just now used the five steps to go through one drawer and cabinet of hers in the bathroom. I set a timer, got the trash bag and donate box and camera in case of anything sentimental to "keep" without keeping the physical item. It took me 27 minutes, taking one thing out at a time, starting with trash, easy, duh donate and then taking things where I would look for them. I took one photo of a knickknack. But I didn't only do that one drawer and cabinet, the decluttering spread a little bit into another bathroom cabinet. AND there was NO MESS. I could have stopped any time and it would have at least been better if not complete. I can certainly envision doing all the chaotic areas of my house this way. Now I have hope instead of being paralyzed with overwhelm. Literally crying. My mother would be proud and happy if I can peacefully, even joyfully, let go of things. I appreciate your approach to this serious problem that really steals our joy. ♥

Yes! These are my absolute favorite videos of Dana, in the sense that you get to visually see the steps being acted out in real time & real life. It’s so encouraging, especially when you’re trying to remember the steps to declutter without making a mess. So glad when people agree to let her film and upload their session with her. So great!

Your sequence of tackling clutter is light years ahead of deciding if something brings you 'joy' or not. Too bad for me that Dear wife is not a fan of the 'where would I look for this first' game .

I really, really like your "One Hour Better" coaching videos. Your 5 step method totally makes sense, but seeing it in action with "real live people" 😅 really helps the method click into space. I know you are going through this process with some of your Patreon members. Do you have any members who are "collector" or "antiquer" type people? I think that would be interesting to see, how a declutter for those types of items would go. Thank you for your books and videos. I suggest them all the time to people who want to start the decluttering process.

My son is a SAH dad with 3 littles. I came over to help with the kids while he decluttered pantry floor so he could walk in and declutter the shelves. An hour and fifteen minutes later. Walkway and alcove under the stairs cleared out swept and 3 bags of trash in my car. Next … one shelf at a time so they aren’t overwhelmed. Decluttering without making a mess. What a great idea. Thank you!

These coaching sessions take my own understanding to the next level as you use the process in the moment, Dana. More, please! She was great and all-in...even thinking out loud about items as she sorted her way through with your prompting. Hearing her thought process took her even further, and helped me. What really clicked for me though was choosing the children's books to keep while making space for them by eliminating others taking up that space. Helped me see how I stuff-shift sometimes without asking myself what might go to make room. Keep anything, not everything. Thanks to you both for this one.

Dana, your guidance in helping Rebecca tackle her cluttered office was amazing 🌟 As someone currently reading your book, it's so helpful to see these strategies in action. The way you broke down the decluttering process into simple, doable steps in the video really complements what I've been reading 📚 It’s impressive how you focus on the real purpose of each space and make sorting things out seem so manageable. Your tip about deciding where an item belongs by thinking about where we'd look for it first is super practical. Seeing the 1-hour transformation in Rebecca’s office and her relief afterwards was incredibly inspiring 💫 Thanks for sharing these strategies both in your book and in the video, making decluttering feel less overwhelming 🙌
Your wisdom and approach are truly appreciated! ❤️

This video made me realize even though I know Dana’s process and use it and listen to her a lot, I wasn’t doing it completely correct- when i take things to other rooms, I don’t always put it in the correct spot.

"Most of us have these rooms [...] at times in our lives."
It just occured to me that this kind of room can appear in a transition period. Kids growing and either needing their own room or moving out, parents, especially mothers returning to work and needing an office. And it's beautiful. Let's all embrace the flow of life and give ourselves permission to let our homes and spaces develop and shift alongside our own changes.

Omg. Just discovering you. I’m so ready to declutter. Over the years much of what I’ve saved is collected from grief, poor choices, and good intentions. I’ve tried the spark joy method but many of my items are saved for the wrong reasons and the act of sorting through any of it causes sadness or disappointment. As a clutter shifter it’s frustrating to not know where to find something i truly need mixed up with all the stuff I’m saving to sell, donate, fix, etc.
I loved the gentle way that you guided her into making decisions without pressure and kept her motivated but focused.

Bless you for your patience. I so see myself in this scenario. We are downsizing planning to move. This is so hard for me to watch because I have justified so much stuff. I have decluttered yearly my closet and my office bookshelf. It's gotten less and less full each year. But I have avoided other areas. This method is much much faster. I learned today that just because the item is sentimental, it does not mean it will be used or needed again.

I have started using the “where would you, you, you look for this thing first?” Method for handling the question when others ask me where should we put x. I don’t have any ideas, and it is not mine. So where would they look for it first, and they’ll be like well… and figure it out. The neat thing is that they are starting to use the same language in their own words to me back in conversations. Where do you look for your knitting thing first? I answered that and asked them why, and they said that they wanted to know where to put something that is found on the floor of the truck. Neat oh huh?!
