- In this DIY water shut off valve replacement video, we'll show you How to Install Water Shutoff Valves under your kitchen sink. For all you do it yourself homeowners, here's how to Install compression valves when you have a water shut off valve leaking, or when you remodel your kitchen. DIY plumbing tips for kitchen sink valve replacement
We prefer to replace any old multiturn kitchen sink valves with newer 1/4 turn shut off valves. these are of course the 1/4 turn ball valves. We install install angle valves every chance we get. Many people have their own name for these water shutoff valves, some call them 1/4 turn shut off valve, some people call them ball valves, angle stops, angle valves they all refer to the same thing. So now you know how to install water shut off valves, and you can do it yourself with our DIY plumbing tips. We always how you the best plumbing tricks.

I changed some valves when I moved into my house a few years ago. Quarter turns for the win.
you know it Shaun. The cool part about 1/4 turn valves is not waiting through 20 rotations to get the water to stop like the multiturn valves.
Twist and leak with the 20 twisties.

Glad to help I have been installing these valves in every one of my flip properties for the last several years now they just workout so much better and they give you the flexibility of being able to individually turn off the ice maker or the dishwasher without having to cut off the main water supply

I always like working with fresh copper but sometimes you just cant. Copper likes to work harden and cause problems and leak. I always cut just behind the old ferrule seat and start over when there is room on the standout pipe. Nice work, Jeff.
With my luck Howie, we always end up with barely enough pipe, so I just pull the ferrule. One time before I got any of my ferrule tools, the Husky just could not remove it, so I cut the pipe behind it leaving only 1" of pipe, and had to solder on an extension pipe to give me enough room to fit on a new ferrule.

I need to invest in one of those ferrule removal tools. In the past I've used my Dremel tool with a small cutting disc to score the ferrule, and it usually breaks away, but the tool I think helps prevent you from damaging the copper tube.

You have better luck than I, with a ferrule puller. I ended up with mushroomed pipe ends on a couple. They were probably way over tightened when originally installed. I've had far better luck with a ferrule splitter (Dickie Dyer "olive" splitter). There is a satisfying snap when the ferrule ring splits. Problem is that such tools are hard to find in the US. I had to get mine from the UK. I do wonder if a PEX ring splitter would work (with an adjustment for the thinner walled pipe).
great channel and video. most kitchen/bath faucet lines are 3/8th now but is the fridge line always 1/4th? thanks!
That is correct the fridge line doe snot need as much water pressure or volume of water as the kitchen faucet, so they are all 1/4". Also the water inlet valve on the back of the fridge is 1/4".
@jeffostroff, I don't know if your prior experience with the Husky ferrule puller was before they had the screw-on adapter and thus required using the two tongs/arms to pull off the ferrule, but the new design works extremely well for me. $11 at HD is a lot more easily justified by a homeowner than $50 for the Duck puller.
Yes, it works better now, but probably still not on a stuck ferrule. Next time I encounter a bad one I want to revisit the subject with the Husky tool.

You can use it, my engineering background has me a bit conservative, I like to replace everything and reset the clock back to zero again. Also the new ferrule is designed by the manufacturer of the new valve so I prefer to use what they ship in he box, as it could be more accurate in terms of tolerance.

The plumbers will cut it off the pipe segment, then patch in a new section of galvanized pipe with a T-fitting, leading to a stub out of pipe with a correct angle stop valve with 1/4" out on it for the ice maker hose.

I installed 4 of these a couple of weeks ago, following these same steps. Most people say tighten 1/4 turn. All 4 leaked. I tightened a little more- 2 still leaked. Tightened a lot more- 1 still seeps. I don't dare try tightening further, I will have to take it apart and use some kind of sealant.
My valves looked slightly different. Before installing I double checked open/closed by turning the handle and trying to blow through the valve.
In our other bathroom I bumped one of the valves before installing cabinets and the water spray reached the ceiling before I could close the valve so be sure they are off and nobody messes with them before hoses are connected.
You should not need any sealant, and they tell you not to use any, this is a compression only connection. It could mean you need bigger wrenches to tighten them down. It should be so tight that you cannot spin the valve assembly on the pipe. I keep tightening until it starts sort of click as tightens.

Do you have an alternative that I can use to remove the compression fitting from the copper tube? My home Depot website (Canada) doesn't seem to have it and and neither does Amazon. Thanks in advance
Jenny try this inexpensive tool from Husky at Home Depot homedepot.sjv.io/z6Y9r it should work as long as the compression sleeve is not corroded, as this is not as good as the tools I recommend for the job.

The compression valve collars on the compression valves under my sink are frozen on. Wont lefty-loosey with channel locks! Any tips?
When you say the collar do you mean that you can't get that big nut to loosen? That's one of the reasons why I gave up using channel locks years ago and I used that rigid wrench set that you see me used in the video. Because it's so much easier to loosen those, I often found that I could not maintain my grip on the channel locks as I tried to wrench it because they are not to be used as a wrench really on something that is super tight you really need a regular wrench. And so even if the regular wrench gives you problems you can slide a pipe over it to give you more moment arm mechanical advantage to be able to loosen the nut.
I used that rigid tool and the part of the wrench that goes into the valve actually bent the threaded stem when I tightened it down on both valves. Has that happened to you??

Hi, Jeff: I notice there is difference in part numbers for the hot and cold water valves. Are they different?
Yes, the cold water is different because one of the outputs is 1/4" for the ice line, the other is 3/8 for the cold water hose to the faucet. The hot water side uses two 3/8" outputs.

My 50 year old kitchen sink plumbing looks just like in this video. Is there any way to avoid (closing the Cold water inlet for my Hot Water Heater first) emptying my Gas Hot Water Heater and the hot water pipe to my kitchen sink so I can then melt the solder off the old copper T fitting and install the new compression fitting? I didn't find a shut off valve exiting the Gas Hot Water Heater... 😕
If you cut off the water to the whole house outside, it should stop the hot water also. Let all water bleed out of a faucet and your lowest plumbing points to make sure the flow stops.
I have seen compression fittings on copper pipe that have been tightened so much that the copper is dented.
That must take a pretty strong guy to do that I'm usually using quite a bit of strength just to get it to tighten

I do love you guys! Some people don't live near home depot, or their local store does not have it. I'm working on getting Home Depot links on there too. Yes I am miffed that those seller son amazon are charging that much, I hope others how up at a lower price.

I love it with bare walls and I can sit there in total comfort in my chair and make this happen. It sure beats lying on your stomach reaching far forward with no strength or mechanical advantage.
It should be noted that you're not going to find a *compression fitting* everywhere. In fact, I've *never* seen one *anywhere* I've lived!
Yes, that's why we showed you both cases here, one was soldered on, and the other was compression fitted on. You'll find the more modern houses are compression fittings.
