Good video. I moved into a neglected 2 acre property and did a major renovation on an old house in a semi-rural area of Surrey. Builders destroyed about 1/2 an acre of lawn with heavy equipment and storage of building materials. I have finally managed to get grass growing on almost all of the lawn, testing different seed mixtures in different areas (shade, trees, direct sun, I have it all). My current problem is that there are fields on 2 sides of my property and I have several different types of weed grass invading my renovated areas. I don't use weed killers as I have a lot of very active wildlife that I don't want to discourage as well as young children who use the lawn frequently as a play area. Thanks for sharing your great ideas and experience!

Thanks for this vid, this is a topic I have been waiting for. I only recently got into lawn care, and although my lawn is looking the best it ever has, after years of neglect it has huge patches of Yorkshire fog (velvet grass), making up about 30% of the lawn. I’m at the point of thinking glyphosphate and starting again is the only soloution. Just need to convince the wife!

thanks for the info. Have you ever thought about spot burning the weed with a torch? Win win. Cook the weed to the root....then put down the seed. Make sure to wet the grass 1st then boil the weed with the torch. Have a water hose nearby for safety and to extinguish when done.

I had a tonne of dandelions in my lawn and i stupidly bought that fiskars weed puller. Just made huge holes in the lawn. I had to go and buy turf to patch it so hopefully it will take. I am going to put down soem lawn feed tonight all over as the grass has been overtaken by clover. Last year it wasnt as bad but this year seems really bad.

I have Poa Annua in my lawn.
I only had the lawn laid this time last year and spent the last 3 days cutting out this feckin weed.
    It's driving me insane.
Just when I think my back breaking work is done - I see another little bunch of this damned weed poking out from somewhere.
I have a little girl that loves rolling around in the grass and I am trying my best to keep it healthy in the most natural way possible but I want to just pull it up already and be done with it.
It's only a small back garden and all of the neighbours love looking down at it so I try to keep it as pretty as possible (I'm on the ground floor in a block of flats) because I'm the only person around that tries with their garden but my patience is wearing thin.
I've spent a small fortune on Canadian grass seed, I am digging out the weed, I'm trying to leave the lawn for longer periods without watering, and I still need some help - even after watching your video.
Every now and then I get the fork out and go around the garden to get air down there. I have reseeded 3 times since having it put down (the lawn food with seed included). I have also top dressed the lawn twice as it was very clay heavy soil.
    I'm at my wits end.
Please help me before I totally give up on this garden and have it all taken out.
    (Great vids by the way).

Do you mind me asking, in your video you mentioned that AMG is happy being cut at 5mm.
Does that mean cutting the grass shorter or leaving it to grow longer?
Sorry for the dumb questions but I'm new to this and quite a proud Irish woman so you know yourself!
I'm determined not to let this damned thing get the better of me.
*check back in this time next year and I'll probably have ripped the whole lot out!!

I’m waiting for weather to warm up before digging these out entirely and replacing with some turf strips cut from widening the borders of the same lawn. Once turf is established am planning to then hollow tine, over-seed, fertilise and top dress the entire lawn. All planned for early March to April. Would appreciate know what you think.

    • @Premier_lawns_official

There isn't a ratio as such
Key is a couple of good handfuls in the bottom of the bucket before you start.
Fill a third of the bucket the add another 2 or 3 good handfuls then mix through bringing the seed up from the bottom of the bucket. Swirl the bucket around and give it a good shake

Hi Robbie, great video, thanks - as usual! I started watching your videos to understand more about lawn care, particularly short grass lawn care. I'm trying to grow a little 50sq.m (very amateur) golf putting/ chipping green in my very dry and full sun garden (top of a hill in Wicklow) from seed (Westland fine grass seed) since April (planted over the general garden grass that I cut low and levelled off with sand and screened topsoil) - I know I should have dug up the ground first and started afresh...... I'm struggling to fill a couple of bare patches and have a fair few weeds growing through including clover with hard stems growing along the ground. I have been keeping dandelions and other weeds at bay by cutting them out in the main but have just sprayed Weedol lawn weedkiller on the lawn and feed it once a month with Miraclegro lawn feed. Anyway, I have the cut down to 10mm and its going okay but am thinking of aerating and topdressing with seed to fill in the bare patches. Just not sure if I should use a sterilised topsoil or sand for the topdressing and if I should use a different type of seed this time?. Any tips you might have would be welcome!

Really nice format of the VLOG ! Look forward to hearing about grass varieties/seeds. I don't really know what constitutes "fresh" grass seed (although I suspect something laying in the back of a dry shed for more than a year isn't ideal) .... perhaps you could share some thoughts. I'm contemplating some Johnsons Premier Pitch (there is a coated pro nitro variety available) - essentially a Perennial Ryegrass mix with Europitch (10%) Coumbine (35%); Eurodiamond (20%); Eurocordus (10%) & Monroe (25%) cultivars but boy - is it expensive and to be honest - I'm just guessing at what might be good - I would prefer a fine bladed grass rather than broad leaf varieties but appreciate a mix makes sense. Presumably when we get more consistent rain (I live in the south east of England and it's been quite arid most of the summer) it's a good time to overseed i.e. late August/September. Any guidance on the above would be very much appreciated.

With regards to the aeration, are you aware of a powered machine similar to yours that can core and is perhaps suitable for residential use?
They are quite expensive to rent so long term it might be worth getting but the only one I found online was 3k. Many thanks

Aerators aren't mass produced and they need to be heavy hence a lot of material goes into making one.

Major issue with this in my lawn. Timothy grass and yorkshire fog etc....Nothing here I haven’t already done, although I’m watering too often to get the seed to grow and getting red thread in other areas, now the weather has turned wet when I want it to dry out.... possibly cutting too often too, but the weed grass grows way quicker and it just out thrives the good grass....Using fiskars weed puller for small clumps and patches. Glyfosate medium patches dig and seed...Big areas scarify to death, dig over, rake and level lawn pull out the weed grass routes, level, re seed, rake in lightly etc. Taking for ever though. Using Johnson’s general purpose lawn seed, seems to blend in ok so far, but time will tell....arguably it would of been better to kill the lot, re seed and start again.

I have found the weed grass to be very resilient. Some of the patches have been killed for a fortnight with round up, yet the weed grass is now starting to show new shoots. No idea what species exactly there’s too many. So I wonder if it’s worth killing the bad patches individually perhaps with a strong mix of professional grade concentrate round up. Leave it a fortnight or so to insure it’s not coming back and your happy then kill the rest as normal over the whole plot as double whammy. They say Yorkshire fog doesn’t like foot traffic and ware, tried numerous ways to kill it. Cutting, scarifying to earth, round up, and it still comes back. Saving grace is when you dig it over the plant is usually a big clump, so raking, grading and levelling does bring the clump of routes to the top and they can be obviously seen and removed, sometimes with a leaf blower to save bit of Labour .

another great video Robbie 👍👍👍, I'll be honest I couldnt tell the difference between that weed you identified and 'normal' grass 🙈, still got to learn alot!.
We had a new lawn laid just over a month ago now, to replace and existing but worn area. It wasnt laid in very good conditions at all.and I would have preferred the gardener to have cancelled until a better day weather wise, it was very wet,
I was worried about compaction of the soil,
Saying that it has actually turned out to be a very decent looking lawn, I've been watching your videos for a while now 👍, and feel I've got a much better understanding now.
I've cut the grass (first cut) on the highest setting available and all seems good. My question is, when should I aerate it? and with which type of machine ? (I cant find a plugging one?)
I am careful to not over water the grass here but being in Manchester, mother nature is a great help! I'd love to be able to maintain it as best I can 👍👍.

Yorkshire Fog is slightly hairy, it is very soft grass and has silvery green hue, you can see it very well after it rained because instead of getting wet water forms a few on it's hairs. It grows in clumps. Poa is different the easiest way to identify it is by the fact it has seed heads nearly all year round, even shortly after mowed as those heads are good at avoiding the mower blade.

    • @ravenmaster6364
      @ravenmaster6364 4 года назад

CMDR Sloma: many thanks indeed for this 👍👍, great information!
So if Poa is able to avoid the blade, I'm guessing by lowering this it would be more effective at dealing with it, yet I'm super wary of going too low with the lawn being new. When would you be happy to cut at a lower height please?

    • @CMDRSloma
      @CMDRSloma 4 года назад +1

@@ravenmaster6364 The goal is to you use rake to lift the seed heads in order to mow them off. If you lower the blade you will end up chasing regrowing heads as those will be growing lower and lower each time, nearly at a ground level. If you lift them up, poa will regrow them at the same height. This way you can keep mowing at desired height.
I was able to get rid of most of Yorkshire Fog, just keep an eye at single silvery blades reappearing every now and then and it will be kept in check in healthy lawn.
Poa is much more resilient type, I mow at second to last setting so my red fescue can grow tall and dense so it starts to smother other grasses. This way I hope to beat Poa but it is ongoing battle. Good luck.

Would 10 10 20 be suitable for your standard lawn? My garden is full of moss and thatch. I've raked it out and bought some seed and 10 10 20 as recommended in the garden centre but I'm not sure if it would suit? I'll be spreading by hand also as I don't have a spreader.

My lawn was too soft when i used the core aerator. The plugs wouldn't stay together. I haven't figured out an appropriate level of moisture.

Do you have any tips for when teh new seeds are not coming through? I scarified the lawn (well, half of it) and reseeded but apart from a 50 x 50 cm patch which came through nothing else seemed to have grown. And it's about 6 weeks now.
I did a test pack (1 x 1m) earlier and that all came, but it has taken to weed grass now as well.

There's not a selective herbicide that will take out the Poa annua and leave the Lolium perrenes, festuca, bentgrasses etc, is there?
Is there an attachment for that aerator that can push the plugs to the side?

No selective I'm afraid. Bigger aerators for golf courses there is an attachment
I'm not aware of anything like that for a lawn

Hi Robbie thank you for reply, if I was to dig out my onion grass how deep do you recommend I go.
It is only about 1x2 mtr square.
Will be topsoil and turf to fix
