Karishma kapoor deserved the National Award for her surreal portrayal of Zubeidaa. A R Rahaman’s music was so soulful and melodies, one of his best works. Kavita Krishnamurthy as the voice of Zubeidaa weaved magic in songs like Main Albeli and Dheeme Dheeme.
Finally this gem is getting some hype today. Stellar cast and performances. Karisma's best performance along with Fiza. She truly deserved her filmfare critics best actress award.
You could’ve given Karishma a little more credit but you glossed over her and went on and on about the others....Had it been a mediocre outsider, you would’ve assigned them qualities they did not bring to this role and carried on about their brilliance undeservingly....Karishma was amazingly brilliant as Zubeida, she made us feel every emotion, joy and torment she felt and she was so damn beautiful, she exemplified regal royalty of the time. That last scene, where she was so headstrong and pushed Rekha aside was so real. I do no remember a false moment with her. She really did deserve the National Award.....Kajol even got the best actress award over her for her loud, ott, nothing special acting in K3G, go figure, not undeserving and quite unfair!
and Zubeidaa's music is timeless... I think Zubeidaa's first husband was played by a very good looking actor who also used to anchor a show on Tv called Bluffmaster..I remember all the details :D
Zubeida is an underrated masterpiece. Interestingly, the screenplay was written by Zubeida Begum's son and film critic Khalid Mohamed (Yes, the same khalid Mohamed who used to write film reviews for Hindustan Times). The characters of both women: first wife as well as Zudeida are so incredibly nuanced. The double standards of the upper class Indian men have been exposed so well! The background score is so apt and poignant and one of the very underrated works of Rahman.
This movie was, and is, a beautiful piece of cinema. I watched it on VCD (the days of two separate CDs) and was mesmerized by the experience. The soundtrack is pretty great as well.. Rekha was brilliant and Karishma was - Chef's kiss. Everyone must watch this piece of cinema.
Filmfare has always been partial towards the more popular film. Karishma deserved the best actress award that year. She got the critic's best actress like some consolation prize when she gave the best performance that year. But guess what?? Kajol got it for K3G because it was the highest grossing movie of the year..when her performance was the most overacted one of all the nominees.
Very true … Filmfare was dolling out awards to Kajol for unworthy performances - Fanna, K3G, My name is Khan .,, like why … even nominated her for Dilwale
Not only Filmfare awards, even national awards and every award for that matter are the biased ones! Here this lady Karisma Kapoor doesn't need any award, she is beyond everything and anything, a Sky none can reach nor touch her high 🙏🙏 she was not among those who lure Biggies to get work, she believed in her dedication and honesty for work and reached the miles which no one can reach 🙏🙏
Thank you Sucharita and Film companion! Zubeidaa was a truly underrated film and soundtrack. Sheer poetry. I revisited it only last week while showing it to a friend. The career best performance from Karisma Kapoor. This movie is my peace place. AR Rahman didn't get enough appreciation for this gem. I'm glad you reviewed it again!
I remember I was in grade 8 when zubaida came out. I only saw it once or twice after the first time and it hit me deep everytime with same force like it had the first time I watched it. You are right this movie is all heart. Completely unpretentious. And I loved karishma 's performance.
Zubeidaa is a classic now, for me it has earned a cult status. Everything about Zubeidaa is just amazing. The cast, the performances, the costumes, the music, the haunting background score and that beautifully etched screenplay.
Thank you for this. The film is really close to my heart and is also one of my mother's favourite. One of the films we watched together. The film, pretty much like Bimal Roy's Bandini or Shekhar's Masoom, doesn't rely on flamboyant camera work and keeps the things simple so that the audience can simply connect with what the people in the film are going through. And the music, the haunting score and Surekha Sikri finally watching the film just breaks you but consoles, as she finally gets to see Zubeida one more time.
Zubeida shall always remain one of the most favourite movies of mine! Watched it in my teens and fall in love with Karisma's beauty but later when I watched it, fall in love with the story! 💚
Such an underrated gem with great performances by the entire cast and musical gems by A R Rahman sir. Salute to the writer and director Shyam Benegal’s Vision. So ahead of its times.
One of my favourite movies. Incredibly moving and poignant, Karishma Kapoor is luminous in every frame. This movie is all heart, I get a lump in my throat just thinking about it.
I grew up in the late 1990s-early 2000's. Those were Karisma Kapoor's golden years. She was always on the TV screen in our living room. So, I grew up watching her and I think she never looked as beautiful as she did in "Zubeidaa". Everything from the costumes to the lighting flattered her like never before and never since.
Can Netflix, Prime or some other OTT stream this film please. It deserves to be seen in all its glory. Not in the "semi decent" print that's available on RUclips.
I love your time machine episodes even more than your reviews, there's a certain nostalgic charm you render to old stories through your own singular way of recapping these movies. Keep it up!
Loved this movie ! I saw it pirated way back in 2001 and the poetic acting of Karishma long stayed with me, especially the chiffon sarees, pearl choker , curls and her doe eyes. Please do watch this movie in time machine - mere apne. Also your presence on youtube is like Claire saffitz 's presence on her RUclips channel - warm, sunshiney, honest and fun
Loved the movie back then as a teenager , its a good thing that the new gen has platforms like this where they can discuss abt movies . I never had an oppurtunity to discuss the movies i loved .
Loved this movie when I watched the first time. All emotions were acted and expressed genuinely. As irrational and and highly emotional Zubeida was, you could empathize with her. Please review Padosan 1968
Sucharita I can't tell you how much I felt for Zubeida !!! I watched it two months back and was completely mesmerized by Karisma and Other cast... Thank you for doing this.
Let me say this I recommended Zubaida to sucharita under dil se review comments section! Right na sucharita!!! Btw I’m from Pakistan, and you expressed my emotions towards this cinematic marvel aptly. Thankyou! 😊
I was 2 years old when this film came out and other than my parents and my sister the first person I ever recognized was Karishma Kapoor and since I couldn't speak fluently at the time, I would call her "chun chun" owing to the song in the movie, chun chun Mai gaati jau. So simple stories like that make some peices of art so special! Still haven't seen the movie but I guess I should!
I have a lingering memory of this movie and the song which had the lines door kahi ek aam ki bagiya.. I couldn't get the song and the lyrics out of my head while a train journey to some temple the night after watching the movie. I was 13 years old and didnt know why i felt lost and sooo connected to the character. I just remembered she wanted to be an actress and that was enough for me to empathise. Also the scene where mandy didi forbids her from dancing with the local dancers is such a powerful scene. I relate to that as well. I wish I could write more im that much in love with the movie and the character.
I've always been intrigued by this film universe, Mammo, Sardari Begum and Zubeida. Thanks for this video, to further add, there's a short story collection by Khalid Mohammed that adds as a further read to the Zubeida story.
Karishma kapoor was REVETING in this CLASSIC. Shyam Benegal's trilogy was amazing🙏🏽 And how GREAT was Rajit kapoor in the scene when he was hearing bad things about his mother when he first enters the palace..by the old assistant of Manoj
I have noticed that both the sisters are very good actors but they are somehow not very choosy when it comes to scripts and their roles. They are very comfortable doing small roles in big hero commercial movies. They could have given more number of amazing performances, considering how talented they are.
This was so interesting! If you’re open to suggestions, I would love to hear your thoughts on 2007’s Om Shanti Om starring SRK and Deepika Padukone. Though any review will be great!
Wow Sucharita, kudos for talking about Kabir Singh again. I totally agree with you, I love the craft of the movie just didn't like the impact of it. Shahid lived that character with total honesty and supporting cast also did a good Job Music and BGM is still 🔥 even haters can't deny it was a very well made movie.
Suchariita I m glad u finally realized the importance of film makers urge to tell "his/her" personal and honest take on a story rather than pleasing the masses or critics or moralists of society or classes. I hope u don't forget this while reviewing art pieces in future because it is the basics of art critique. this is the basic point that makes the viewer connect with a movie or art piece and differentiate between an honest emotion and a propaganda machine.
Hey Su4rita, you are just mind-blowing!!! I really like your articulation and a wit to see the intricacies in movies. Keep it up. Really appreciate your efforts...yeah, you can review movies like mother India, Do bigha Zameen, The trilogy: Fire, Water & Earth.
omg what an interesting storyline... had no clue! fine actors ! i was 9 at that time. su4ita we ABSOLUTELY needed Mehboob and that hand dance by Sush. it is iconic. no haters plz

Fiza was made by Filmfare guy only. That'd be like awarding oneself.
@@sumanghoshchowdhury3251 of course Karan Johar gang was already at work even back then buying awards for his dharma kids only
My dad being a Shyam Benegal fan, I am thankful that I didn't miss the movie at the time when I was in school.

In 2001 I was 14... Intresting karishma won critique award for fiza but not for zubieda film

Zubeida is a lovely film...old memories...thank you for revisiting this movie
Karisma Kapoor deserves an Oscar for her flawless performance in #zubeidaa or even #fiza..the best actress post sridevi generation..

“Main Hoon PAHELI” is so relatable. Yes, I am that PAHELI, y’all!
Great Point - Filmmakers make film for themselves. Sucharita acknowledges the passion Reddy for Kabir Singh. Respect. A critic is born. 👌
Love your reviews Sucharita. Next please review Masoom or Kaun.
Did anyone ever spot Tilottama Shome in "Mehendi hai rachne wali"? I could not find it in her credites anywhere
