In the area of Northern California where I lived as a child, Bay trees grew abundantly. My dad a miner at the time would harvest the leaves for a fellow miner who was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis. The fellow would make a strong tea which he claimed relived the pain allowing him to continue working. At that time you worked or starved, no government program to fall back on. ...Sometime in the 80’s a blight killed the trees. The correct name for these trees is California Laurel.

I recently learnt burning bay leaves and closing the door to the room helps purify the air. A bay leaf deters insects, place rhem Ina pantry, cupboard, behind fridges, and cockroaches will leave, although it doesn't kill them they will leave.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge of the uses for Bay leaves. I never knew it had good health benefits! My mother has a lung problem so I will share this with her. I just bought some and will start using it for tea for now on. Do you happen to know if the commercially sold is sprayed? I know it repels certain insects, but wondering if it should be rinsed with vinegar and water first?
