Thanks Ken. I think it is awesome that you are putting out these videos. I do want to point out that a number of these coaches who seem to be promoting "Twang" specify that it is a Training sound NOT a singing sound much like your "Bright La". The Brightness in your La is a product of engaging the "Twanger" other wise the sound would end up being dark and operatic sounding. The muscle movement that causes the Twang and the muscle movement that opens the throat are two different things and can happen at the same time. Coaches sometimes train these things separately depending on the needs of the student. When making a program that tries to benefit everyone you must include exercises that train separate aspects of the vocal mechanism separately. The sounds are not singing sounds but strengthening and control exercises.
Ken I can't find adequate words to thank you for the information you have shared in this video. You have taken me out of a doubt of years regarding the twang and every time I have tried to sing with twang it sounds very nasal and not good tone. Belcanto and what you teach is the true path. I agree this is a twang at an extreme, but when it’s applied with a balanced sound, meaning you apply maybe 10-30% of twang, then I believe it can make a good sound. I mean, a lot of great singers sing with a bit of twang. Never 100% twang. Bruno Mars, Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi. I’m korean, and for me, every American singer has a bit of twang cuz y’all have natural twang in how you speak English
you won't sound good in a short time trust me , especially if you don't have previous experience with singing , I am exercising my voice for more than 1 year I don't have Kens course but with his free videos it has improved quite a bit compared to how bad I was, but I am still too bad but don't give up keep exercising even if you don't see results because it will take time , but if you have Kens course your voice will grow much faster
because I have some records from when I first started training and it is soooo soooo soooo bad and back then I thought it was ok but now when I compare now and then I see how terrible it was , but also after 1 year when I listen the records from now I will realise how bad I am but year by year you will always get better if you practice correctly

good for you having a live vocal coach is much better you will get instant feedback just make sure he is right one and is not going just to pluck money from you , follow Ken's advice if the vocal coach can't sing well himself then he isn't the right one

Ears being clogged are normally either ear or throat infections. They can be painful, or just make it difficult to hear yourself singing. If symptoms persist, it may be worthwhile to have your ears and/or throat checked by an ENT.

Hi Ken. I’m really enjoying the live streams although I missed today’s. At 37:33 you talk about that sound embedding itself. I would like to know if it’s possible to remove that sound? I feel my whole chest register and speaking voice sounds like vocal fry or what I would call a kazoo. My head voice is much clearer but lacks power. I have always had weak vocals and speaking. I am now 44.
You have to kind of start from the basics and get your voice clean and free of embedded bad habits. Work with a pure AH vowel and singing it without fry, without trying to twang or any other affectation besides a clean tone AH. If you have a voice that sounds like a kazoo, it's time to replace that with rich, beautiful, tone.

Ken, where this ampitheaters is actually placed? You said it's in the back of the throat, but can you say it more specific? I think I found it, but I'm not sure. It's like one time it's there and I feel this resonance that comes aboard with it, and the second time I lose it. Do I need to lean the sound in the same place everytime no matter what vowel mod. I use? I'll be very grateful if you tell me.
It depends on the note and the vowel, as to exactly where each resonant pocket resides. I'm talking about the area up behind the uvula. You'll feel it back up in that area.
The difference is very subtle between notes. It's more a difference of size, which affects the resonant frequencies. Think about how different size musical instruments have different resonant characteristics, like different sized rooms have differences in acoustics. In the vocal tract, the sizes are more similar, but the tuning of the resonance is due to the forming of the space, which is variable.

Twang and curbing are alike in the sense that some voice methods teach both of them as answers to singing in general, and they are misconceptions as to how the singing voice actually works, when it comes to actual, practical applications in singing. People come up with these concepts and then try to fit singing into them, as if they are actually solutions to learn to sing well. They can make singing be like forcing a round peg into a square hole.
Thank you for the answer. That's some stuff to think about. I'll show the answer at my voice teacher. In Belgium we talk about 4 singing types. Neutral, curbing, overdrive and edge. All the rest are effects. I think your open throat technique are mostly neutral, mixed voice and edge. Overdrive = Pearl jam (the e and o) So yeah there are misconceptions. It's difficult to relax with curbing because I choke of the vocal chords and have not enough space in my throat. Twang is more lifting the tongue I think and is an effect we don't need very much. I realize that my reply is 2 years late, but I just wanted to post a message as a fellow Belgian. :) The things you're describing are from CVT and I used to study it as well. Until I hit a plateau and I felt like things didn't make sense anymore. The curbing thing was killing my throat as well and even now I still don't know what they exactly mean by curbing. XD I think it's their definition of mixed voice, but I don't know for sure. Anyway, I agree with Ken saying that it's not the best practical application for singing, but I guess it can be interesting for research purposes. I've been studying CVT for 3 years and it has put my mind in a state of "continuous overthinking and analysing while singing", which felt horrible. Also, I assume from your nickname that you like to sing rock music. :) In my experience KTVA is much better for that purpose than CVT. When I used to sing in "Edge" it was always super twangy and it really didn't sound well. CVT also doesn't teach you how to increase your range and their approach to finding distortion is just... super weird... I just ended up hurting myself. Anyway.. I've been doing KTVA for one year now, and I have noticed so many improvements alreadt. For me the "open throat approach" is the way to go. Singing feels way more comfortable now. And my distortion is coming in naturally, although I still have a long way to go. But that's also the beauty of it, I'm no longer stuck. :) Anyway.. it's up to you whether you'd like to stick to CVT or not. :) I know they even teach it in the conservatory of Antwerp and I did notice quite a lot of improvements at first. I'm just sharing my experience in case you have doubts about it, like I had last year and decided to switch to KTVA completely. :) I really have no regrets making this change. :)

Ken did a great analyse of korn freak on a leash for example. But with Chris Leape, you can put the little details in a song. The feelings. That's a lifelong lesson. Feeling things. I don't think so. You have to close the throat down almost completely at the epiglottis in order to create twang. I encourage you to OPEN your throat, not close it down. You can't do TWANG without closing down the epiglottis to a narrow slot. It's nearly useless, except for shrieking, shrill, piercing screams. But if that's what you want, it's the cat's meow and the duck's quack!

The problem with all this trolls is taht they think higher is better but they do not understand that singing correctly with proper overtones and connection the core- chest voice is the way you can get proper chiarscuro and that true squillo what they call resonance comes from chest voice which is Thyroartythenoid activation not cricothyroid. I think microphones and amplification confuses them. They think what they hear in twang technique is squillo but it is all noise. Remove those mics and they will be shocked at the quality of the sound. It is sad because all this new age singers use this terrible technique.

How do you know it does not sound bad? you are constricted as fuck if you use twang! you are rasing your larynx. closing your throat and forced fake brightness. ayOU LOOSE SOME CLARITY AND YOUR VOWEL ENUNCIATION SUFFERS. nO ONE HEARS WHAT YOU ARE SINGING and it is just terrible singing. yOU SHOULD INSTAED GRWO YOUR CHEST VOICE AND HEAD VOICE SEPERATELY AND TRY AND WORK ON YOUR PASSAGIO TO GIVE YOU THAT COVER AND ACCESS TO YOUR CT muscle folds. Twang is constricted singing and it will destroy voice
I'm a bit shocked, Ken. As much as you mention Twang or Ping (I like that term better), I could not find any video dedicated to that subject. In this Q&A video you talk about the benefits of Ping but you did not go into detail about HOW to do it. How do you know it does not sound bad? you are constricted as fuck if you use twang! you are rasing your larynx. closing your throat and forced fake brightness. ayOU LOOSE SOME CLARITY AND YOUR VOWEL ENUNCIATION SUFFERS. nO ONE HEARS WHAT YOU ARE SINGING and it is just terrible singing. yOU SHOULD INSTAED GRWO YOUR CHEST VOICE AND HEAD VOICE SEPERATELY AND TRY AND WORK ON YOUR PASSAGIO TO GIVE YOU THAT COVER AND ACCESS TO YOUR CT muscle folds. Twang is constricted singing and it will destroy voice
I'm a bit shocked, Ken. As much as you mention Twang or Ping (I like that term better), I could not find any video dedicated to that subject. In this Q&A video you talk about the benefits of Ping but you did not go into detail about HOW to do it. Why not make a video on it and please title it PING (I searched on Ping and no videos came up with that title) so it easy to find when searching. Thanks, Ken......
