  • LIVE VIDEO - Underwater in Antarctica. See the live chat replay for commentary.
    Broadcast live October 30, 2019.
What is it like under the thick sea ice in Antarctica's frozen ocean?
Experience this unique environment in real time by watching to our LIVE video feed broadcast from the MOO, 70-ft (21m) below the sea ice of Antarctica!
The video/audio feed is provided by the McMurdo Oceanographic Observatory (the MOO) in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica - the southernmost accessible marine environment on our planet (78°S latitude).
Live video events typically last 1 hour due to internet limitations in Antarctica.
Live-streaming schedules posted to twitter @MOOAntarctica and here:

The camera is stationed at 70ft (21m) below the sea ice of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, near the United States’ McMurdo Station. Placed at the intersection of a rocky slope and a vast expanse of sponge-covered marine mud, the MOO continuously captures the underwater activities of invertebrates, fishes, Weddell seals and scientific divers performing their work. Owing to the limited internet service in Antarctica, live video can not be broadcast continuously.
The water temperature this time of year is typically -2°C (28.5°F), and the sea ice cover overhead may regularly be 3 to 12-feet thick (1 to 4m).
The most noticeable sounds this time of year are the eerie, otherworldly whistles, chirps and buzzes of Weddell seals, the cracks and pops from the sea ice flexing and contracting, and a low rumble caused by wind blowing over the ocean's icy crust.
Due to the solid cover of shore-fast ice, penguins, whales and other seal species are usually absent at this time of year.

Due to internet limitations in Antarctica, our live streams are limited to 1-hour, approximately once per week. Audio-only feeds may also be available at some times.
The McMurdo Oceanographic Observatory is a project managed by Paul A. Cziko at the University of Oregon USA, supported by the US Antarctic Program and funded by the US National Science Foundation.
