- Hey, Wranglerstar family! Get ready for a boot battle like no other. In this video, I'm unboxing and scrutinizing some of the finest, custom-built boots out there. We’re putting the renowned JK Boots, the iconic White's Smokejumpers, the tough Nick's Hotshots, and JK’s own masterpieces to the test.
This isn’t just about finding the sturdiest boot. It’s a deep dive into the heritage of West Coast logging boots, born out of necessity in the giant timber forests of Oregon, Washington, and Northern California. These lands called for a boot that wasn’t just tough, but purpose-built for their rugged, challenging terrain.
I’ll be comparing these legendary boots not just on craftsmanship and comfort, but on their histories and the stories they tell. We'll explore what makes each pair unique, how they’ve evolved to meet the demands of both yesterday’s loggers and today’s outdoor enthusiasts. And the big question: which of these boots stands out in our ultimate showdown?
Join me as we step into more than just boots - we’re stepping into a rich legacy. Whether you’re a fan of quality footwear, a history buff, or just love a good, reliable boot, this is a video you won’t want to miss.

Red Wings are made in Minnesota, and we too are west of the Mississippi
Wranglerstar thank you so much! So glad you are happy, these were fun to make, thank you for the kind words! Enjoy!
Beautiful boots! Please add the PrOhO model as an option to order. 😎
These look awesome.
My jk western boots delivered yesterday…they are COMFORTABLE!!!!!! Can’t wait to try and wear them out.
Just ordered!!
LOVE my JKs :]
Redwing boots, I would consider a “ up-north “ boot. Born in Minnesota for loggers, Taconite miners and men who worked on the Mississippi river, Floating logs down stream.
I agree, those and Thorogood’s made in Wisconsin.
I've owned pretty much every brand here and a few others.
Nick's used to be my go to. But that changed for the worst once they got bought. Then I bought Frank's which opened up in the original Nick's building with their best custom shop manager in my opinion. Great guy, great service, great boots and I trust them with my life. Lineman, logging and fire your boots are your life line.
JK attracted me because they were the first to offer an insulated boot. Working in the Midwest I can't tell you how nice it is to have this style of boot with insulation. You all know the cold feet issues once they get wet.
Both JK and Frank's are killing it and I couldn't be happier with both companies unless they sent me a free set LMAO
I work a few buildings down from frank. He keeps his Trailers on our property, and uses our Forklift all the time.
@@in4d2i0ca pretty nice cabinet shop if I recall correctly
Red wings seem to be the best
All of those boots are useful, beautiful, and examples of great workmanship. Those JK's are so well appointed they may choose to make that boot and call it the WranglerStar. Amazed at the look...two toned and rough side out.....fantastic.
The "no metal" rule for fire boots is why I always tell guys looking to get into quality boots (Whites, Nick's, JK, etc.) that just because something is NFPA certified does not necessarily mean it's a tougher boot. The combination of screwed and sewn sole construction makes a boot more durable than simple sewn down construction. Not that you're ever really going to be able to feel that difference, short of absolutely abusing the boot.
I'm right there with you I couldn't have said it better myself
But what are the screws made of? 🤔
How the heck did you get me watching new boot lacing ASMR?! Well played, sir.
I do appreciate anything with true craftsmanship, even if it's not something I'm in the market for. Thanks for your time and explanations, once again.
Ordered a pair of JKs when you made the tour video. Got the bison leather. They may be the most comfortable shoe I have ever warn. Will be buying another pair to replace my work boots.
Worn, not "warn" and I offer this correction of word with nothing but politeness brother.
I own 5 pairs of JK's at this point haha. Glad you got yourself a pair! I highly suggest their Bison leather. Next level comfy! And TRULY no break-in period.
i watched this video as a soft-handed limey and got a huge education as to the clever thinking behind these boots. You guys are embarrassingly clever. Thanks for the amazing video.
Michigan East Coast man here. I’ve got a pair of Nicks Urban loggers. I enjoy the boots, very well made. The only downside is how heavy they are. I like the sound of a lighter boot with the same or if not better quality. Great Video, thanks for getting me into quality boots!
I’m an east coast Bean Boot guy.
There was a funny scene on TV maybe Longmire (or was it Yellowstone) where they were discussing how the bad guys must be Boston mobsters in town looking for trouble because they were wearing LL Bean.
Redwings, Carolinas, Thorogoods, and a honorable mention to Georgia boots. I cannot tell you exactly what I do for a living but I do a lot of digging, hiking, walking through and standing in shallow water. I love my logger style Carolinas
Redwings are the best
So what exactly do you do for a living?
@@rider.otwh1 utility work all over the east coast
I've been contemplating buying a pair of JK Boots, I think you've helped me make up my mind.
Better hurry up! The lead time a few weeks ago was 6-8 weeks before I bought my pair, thankfully they were in stock.
I have a pair of Wesco and Chippewa boots (I used to climb telephone poles for a living) since about 1985. I take very good care of them and they are still working for me.
“Darn Tough” makes the best wool socks IMHO, US made, comfortable, durable, and their No questions asked lifetime replacement warranty is nice too.
I love the Onewheels in the background and the boots.
I'll be honest, my friend, when I first saw that red hat, it seemed very silly, but it's you now, man. Don't ever stop. Solid look.
Best is definitely dependent on what you’re doing. I have to wear boots with metatarsal protection on concrete all day. Pretty hard to beat redwings for my job. The pair I’m wearing right now are right around 8 years old. They’re almost ready to be resoled but they’re more comfortable walking around in than a pair of tennis shoes in my opinion.
I think that JKs advantage is that he's picky about the leather and willing to have waste in order to have the grain correct.
As an Oregonian who now lives in North Carolina, I am glad to hear I never left the west coast! Although the humidity and lack of Doug firs would tell me otherwise. Lol
You greatly improved your living location.
"No metal in these..."
Goes ahead and shows 50 metal screws in the sole of the boot
Bought a pair of Thursday Loggers several years back, very similar to the Nix urban logger. Not all their boots are, but this model 100% handmade in the USA. They're on their second sole and I absolutely love them.
While Thursday are very good quality for the price(I own a pair of captains myself) they're no comparison to the JK OT, super duty, or any of the other flagship NW boot manufacturers, three times the build quality for three times the cost. At the end of the day the Thursdays are a good looking boot with a good midrange upper for s bargain price.
Those look so comfortable! Jon and family there at JK were so beautiful when you got the tour.
I'm looking forward to seeing how they wear in.
Whites red dog hunter, waterproof, deerskin lined with steel toe, rolled top edge and steel toes.....lasted 4 years in the oilfield before needing soles. Got the same but with insulation. When you buy $500+ boots they better be good. I ve got Wesco, Nicks, and Drews fire boots also. All excellent choices. Next up are gonna be Franks and JK in some variety for motorcycle riding and mechanic work 👍
Wesco lace to toes were my go to boot in 30 years of logging. The best IMO.
Love seeing the Dala Horse in the background.
Congratulations on you purchase. They look amazing.
Us southern men would rather tumble down a hillside in our Redwings than strap on, I mean lace up the high heels! Haha, good looking boot.👍🏼
I have some Bison JK boots and love them. Congrats on your new JK's... they look great!!
I have a pair of Whites farmer/rancher and a pair of Whites 6” Moc Toe boots. They are awesome once you get them broke in.
Or maybe those boots have high heels so it's less of a transition when west coasters put their street shoes back on.
Wearing high heel sneakers and acting like the team queen....
Lmfaoo my fkin man plus we all know whites was a dam Appalachian from west Virginia
The heels are high because of the large amounts of feces on the sidewalks.
That applies to both coasts.
That applies to both coasts.
I got my Black Crusher hat in today. Got great compliments. Love it!!
To be fair, I wouldn't consider a pair of Red Wings, born from the log camps and iron mines of Minnesota, an "East Coast Boot".
But I'm not a logger or a smokejumper. For me, the Iron Ranger line of boots makes more sense - I'm on concrete floors for a number of hours a day, I'm not trudging through heavy woods and up and down mountains. I need relatively smooth soles that don't pack 5 pounds of mud in huge lugs and tall heel stacks. I want durable US made leather that's abrasion and spark resistant. And I'd rather not spend six or seven hundred dollars.
I had a pair of redwings designed to never slip on concrete literally the only thing I've ever worn that didn't kill me after standing 12 hours on concrete best 300 dollars I've ever spent
Yeah, 99% of the viewers either need steel toes or general work boots, which Redwing or Wolverine bring great value at the $200-$300 price point. I personally don’t know a single person who needs a highly specialized, $600+ wildland firefighter boot.
@@TheGuardian_TM same as his shirts no one on this earth is paying half what he does for a shirt when u can buy one a quarter of the price and if u take care of it it lasts just as long
Redwing 2218 were the gold standard in logger/lineman boots. They were $350 almost 20 years ago and were well worth it back then.
Really enjoyed this, that stack sure looked mighty fine.
Those are really nice! A lot of the ladies here in Oklahoma wear those boots and say they’re very comfortable.
By far the nicest looking built to last boot I’ve seen
I love you you are supporting local businesses,
I'm pretty sure that the "west coast" boot uses the most important east coast sole. Vibram is a Massachusetts originated company..
You're ready for a night on the town with heels like that.
😮😊nice boots for sure. Thanks for sharing 😊
Waiting on my shadow bison leather Superduty's. Had to go with steel toe because my work requires it but super excited though!
You said something here that i really think needs to be said more often, even though all these pnw boot crafters are competing they never try to slander eachother. In fact my fist set i was talking with whites on a custom order and they openly stated that they could do it but for what i wanted jk would've been the better option, no other company would do something like that
Very Professional
💯🤙🏻😎
Have a pair of German Lowas.
Bought in 1976, they were $145.00,
I think. Resolved twice, still have em.😊
Resoled 😊
Spell check strikes again 🥵🤮🤷🏿♂️
Great content! Off topic but as a motorcyclist my Westco engineer and Harness boots are the best. Amazing protection and great looks.
For a guy that is always barefoot you sure have a lot of shoes.
It really depends what you're using them for. On a construction site I'd rather have Redwing or Wolverine. In ship building even more so Redwing, the logger boot would be terrible at that.
If you are going up and down a ladder all day Redwing is king.
I got a pair of Carharts like the first two boots you showed, love em!
West coast man can't help but show off his collection of heels and pretty hats
Love the channel and content. As an East coast guy, I wouldn't wear those boots if you paid me. Those boots remind me of the "Price is right" game show lumberjack that would walk up the hill game. You can keep your left coast boots. Thanks but no thanks brother.
Nice looking boots Cody. You mentioned loving Smartwool socks, I used to use those but have made the switch a few years ago to Darn Tough brand merino socks from Vermont. Life time Warranty , I have found that they outlast both smart wool and ice breaker. And are incredibly comfortable to boot.
Cody used to be a Darn Tough fan......maybe still is, I don't know.
We get our Darn Tough at the local-owned family-operated Coastal Farm And Ranch.
We prefer the knee-high.
When he was mentioning smart wool it actually looked like he has on a pair of darn tough mountain/ski socks.
I have been wearing Grip6 wool socks for a few years now. They are amazingly durable. The best part is they are made in Utah with USA sourced Merino wool. Darn Tough and Smartwool are USA made but from global materials.
I switched to darn Tough as well, now that they are available in Europe. Far better wearing than Smartwool and Icebreaker, they also hold their shape better and I wash them at 40°C and dry them in a hot dryer with zero adverse effects.
Icebreaker gets my vote for merino 1st layer and t-shirts, Soft, hard wearing with a bit of Tercel, and great colours and fit.
Those JK's got me feeling all sorts of fizz.. 😍
These all look awesome!
Ironlace boot laces are amazingly strong, thin, abrasion and cut resistant for a synthetic lace. Never had to trudge through hot embers with them though.
You’re not even wrong I’ve got a couple of whites that are amazing boots. I’m definitely interested in trying Nick’s and JK Boots
I remember my first pair of " loggers".
Loved them. I paid $58 in 1979. Dont remember the brand. But at that price back then they were high end.
Wranglerstar boot video. Instant like. Lovely suspenders by the way!
Filson suspenders,
@@wranglerstar thankyou Cody. Im looking for suspenders. Do you have much time on them?
Nearly 20 years,
@@wranglerstar oh wauw! Definitely ProHo proof😎
My choice for rough service are WESCO Job Master.
In Oklahoma Oil field construction. had them since 2012, planning to get a new pair soon either Franks or JK.
What do I have to tell them to get that same pair of boots, because those look amazing.
Im awaiting my pair of nicks. Been 6 months but I’m excited
Redwings for framing new homes. Followed by a cheaper boot timberland pro anti fatigue is the most comfortable boot.
Steel toe or composite toe is an osha standard and must have.
Mr. Wranglerstar. There is never a too long video
I have a pair of handmade Dunhams from Vermont still going second set of soles on them Whatever the leather is is phenomenal and it’s very soft and they lace up to suck to the contour of your ankle
Great video thank you
A rare treat, indeed!
I need to get some good boots soon, I've been wearing jungle boots while in the mountains and the rocks are really tearing up the toes..
That is a gorgeous pair of boots 🙌🏻😱
WOW . . . I can smell that new leather smell from my Wildland boots when Recieved them 20 plus yrs ago. . .
Thank you for share
The soles (vibram) on all your boots are from the east coast! Central Massachusetts
Vibram is, and have always been, an Italian company my guy.
@@badibbs that’s awesome, there u.s. headquarters is in Massachusetts, east coasten my guy
I’d like to try JK, whites smoke jumper cured my plantar fasciitis
Thanks Cody
Damn. Those are a beautiful boot. I've never heard of the brand, but i think im going to look into a pair.
I my self have 6 pair of whites 3 different styles 1 pair of wrscos 1 pair of Drew's I have been a maintenance Mechanic for 25 years In the juice industry being on concrete for 12 hours a day sometimes months at a time these PNW boots are a God send will one day get a pair of JKS Thanks for the videos
My dad was in heavy construction for 65 years. Wore the same pair of Whites for his last 40 years. He would take them up to Spokane to get them refurbished every five years.
That hat really does suit you - It grew on me :)
Praying for you and yours
I agree West Coast boots look much better on a nice walk down Rodeo Drive! We've got a boot company here in NC called "moonshine" boots.....made with real unshaved Possum HIDES!! LOL....Love the content Cody! Josh
”Another good west coast knife, straight from North Carolina” 😂😂😂

You need to review a pair of Daytons(wohlford &co). Another sturdy west coast boot made in Vancouver Canada since the 1940s. Bought a pair five years ago and theyre still solid. My most worn pair of footwear.
Really nice boots! will look into Nick boots
Danner makes great boots. Best pair of boots i had in the military
I appreciate your discerning taste. Buy quality and buy them once! What are those pants you are wearing? Love your videos!!
As the uncle of a brand new forestry fireman I’m gonna recommend these for him.
Try Darn Tough socks. My go to for my JK’s I wear daily.
Emm..Rich Corinthian Leather!
Those are stunning boots.

I need a pair of JK boots. I went down the boot rabbit hole a couple years ago. I do need a good pair of west coast boots still.
i’ll always be a midwest + mountain kid. not one for the coasts
Cody. Would you please do a video on best way to protect a vehicle from EMP strike. This would be huge in our preparations. Thank you.

Along the lines of:
"I thought."
"To my self."
Jocko is giving you the look with your video title XD
You always talk about West Coast man and East Coast man but I was wondering what your thoughts were on Midwest man? Specifically fellas that are up in the Northwoods of Northern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
Cody, get some Darn Tough socks. All of their socks are made in the US and carry a lifetime warranty. Smartwool is good too but not all are made in the US and they don't have the same lifetime warranty.
I’ve considered getting a pair of Nick’s…I only wear boots on the weekends. Wonder if they would be worth it…great review here.
