    Detroit has its own sound. I remember that from when my dad had one used for hauling new Toyota cars from the pier to the dealership in mid 70's . His was straight piped and had twin shifters . I knew he was coming home 20 minutes before he got there. I can hear it come through the valley

      We have an older gent that drives for us, he's around 70. He started driving trucks right after getting home from Vietnam. When we first got this GMC it was sitting outside of the shop Idling and as the old grumpy truck driver was walking past it, he couldn't help but open the door, reach in and give it a rev. A smile came to his face. I watched through the window of the door with my own smile. Peace.

    I use to drive a 8v 71n in a K124 Kenworth, after 2 hours in the bastards that is enough!, BUT when you have to drive them for a 12 hour day, you were very tired and when I turned off the useless, gutless, screaming thing off, that was a gift !. I then drove the same model truck with a 350 cummims and there was no way would I ever get in detroit 2 stroke powered truck and drive it all day. The 350 Cummins had more Torque, a bit more Horsepower, it was better on fuel and was quieter, a pleasure to drive and no where near as tired. Noise causes fatigue over a period of time, like 12 hours for an example.

    It's interesting how the internet works.
    Today in class, we learned about 2 stroke engines, and it was the first time I found out that you got 2 stroke diesel engines.
    That's the weirdest sounding thing I have ever heard. And I have heard wankel engines before.
    Edit: Personally, I don't like two strokes one bit.
    But, a two-stroke diesel sounds like a perfect match.
    It would be interesting to see how two similar engines compare performance wise. 2 vs. 4 stroke.

    I wouldn’t trust that old mechanical tach 100%. But also, 2400 isn’t insane for a Detroit. They probably set the governor up a littler higher for emergency water pumping to get the max flow possible. Either way, it’ll take 2400 all day long and ask you for another.

      Back around 1983 PAM transport bought a few trucks with the V6 92 Detroit and 5 speed Allison, they were used for hauling freight. The engine didn't have enough power to reach maximum RPM in high gear. That's what I was told. I never drove one though.

  • @steveconnell791
    @steveconnell791 2 года назад

    People that like the 4 stroke diesels hate these engine's, I like em, I think the 2 cycle concept is interesting. I think design can be improved, if you can figure out a way to change the exhaust timing as the RPM's drop the power curve could be changed, (longer torque curve).i know on a 2 cycle the faster the engine turns the earlier the exhaust has to exit. If you look at most 2 cycles the exhaust opens at 90°, those big ship engines have a very long stroke to get around this problem, this is about the closest thing to having a 4 cycle fire every rev.

      I'm not that old ,and I got in the generator field in the late 90s.
      Ask any older gen guy, we miss the response of those old 2 strokes , the 4 strokes are so laggy it's not even funny.
      Whack a big ol 750kw gen with a 12v-71 with 100% load ,watch it recover by about 2-3 seconds.
      A new 4 stroke is still "climbing the hill" after 4-5 seconds.

      If you look up "Bivens 8V96" the things you wrote about were addressed. Intake ports moved down on custom liners, shortened connecting rods and revised rocker ratio for more lift on the exhaust valves plus a .200 longer stroke on the crank extended the power stroke and got the scavenging in line ( also retarded cam timing ). All these mods added 151 hp with the same injectors ( 735 hp marine spec 8v92TA went to 886 hp ). There's a patent paper about it

      Well, not actually. The 2T detroit sure sounds like it's spinning faster than a 4 stroke but it is deceiving. Large diesels have a very comparable rev limit in reality. This 6v detroit makes it's power @ 2100 rpm, and that's pretty much where most big sixes run. Granted the Detroit likes to stay at that or above, but a mack engine for instance makes it's power at 2100 rpm as well. The big difference is in the sound they make. And of course if you lug a Detroit like you can lug a mack, the detroit falls on it's face. They don't really spin faster, they just need to keep spinning... Peace out.
