My psychiatrist says that people find comfort in the fact that they have more than enough toilet paper. They can't control the world, but they can control how clean their butts are in the time of a health crisis... so yeah, we are incredibly stupid ha!
I was just reading an article about that! It said that it's about psychological control. People are anxious because things are uncertain but being 'safe' by buying tp (and other goods) calms them and makes them feel as if they have some control over the situation. It said once people have enough of what they comfortably need though, they really need to find alternate ways to self soothe instead of going out and stockpiling more and more, which gives only temporary relief.
