One of the biggest successes with the puppet, is that most cast members have subconsciously forgotten its puppet and not a real baby. So they will do things and say things as if they are dealing with a child actor.
No chance of that unfortunately; if Andy Serkis can't be nominated for mo-cap performances, I doubt a puppet could, which is a shame. But it should definitely win an award for props (if it hasn't already)
Five puppeteers working in coordination to bring the baby to life - that is incredible teamwork! You can see it how they all went to town during the buttons-pushing scene in episode 4, and the "baby stepping out of the ship sleepy and wondering where is daddy mando" on episode 5.

The Mandalorian really exemplifies what I think is still a trend in truly great modern tv and movies--that while CGI has advanced leaps and bounds to create many of the incredible, hyper realistic effects we take for granted, the magic of film making still lies in practical effects. Even when they opt to use CGI in the final version, there is not replacement for filming with a practical model to base your lighting and movement on, and it shows.

It seems like that is the best way to continue star wars. Don't imitate it, look at what influenced original star wars and work with that first. The genre of sci-fi, the spirit of westerns, the structure of samurai films, the moralities of greek myth.
In retrospect Star Wars has been finally perfected the way George Lucas has been trying to do for years after the creation of The Mandalorian, to which Luke Skywalker was shown in the best way imaginable that George Lucas himself cried with joy.
This proves CGI will never compete with practical. It’s fantastic. I hope Mando brings a Renaissance to films where practical effects return with an iron fist.

When you’ve seen great puppetry whether in stage or screen it beats CGI hands down. Seen a number of shows like War Horse and to see something brought to life is pure magic.
Makes me think back to why Jurrasic Park was so so good before they CGI'd all the dinos. Sometimes puppets are just better. Even if they are more expensive... it's worth it in the end
