@ArmeAntica Your thoughts suggest to me that there must've been some basic level of "opportunistic" action with common weapons like this which schools gave time to expand upon. While I doubt many farmers had the full array a student did, a farmer had to have had practice swinging a good cut. Look at modern people: any toddler can see its a hook, and who hasn't simply swung a stick or cord for boredom. A brave, psychotic or desperate farmer in a pinch could've swept a leg or fought.
