Thanks for playing Long Live Santa! I'm part of the dev team and we know it's pretty rough around the edges but we'll always keep it free for people to mess around with at Christmas :D
The Christmas midi (sorry: tracker) tune, the homage to the original LGR opening, and the clones; it's crazy how much an annual LGR Christmas video helps get me in the holiday spirit each year.
For some reason, it instantly reminded me of Sneak King. Maybe it's because it's free, maybe it's because it's a non-violent stealth game that somehow manages to be creepier than if violence _was_ involved, or maybe it's because I'm kinda weird.
Always like how the Christmas videos are a sort of throwback to the older style of LGR vids, both with the classic intro and them being reviews of (usually forgotten) PC games. While I definitely prefer the direction the channel has taken overall, focusing more or hardware and such, but it's nice that once a year we get this little throwback for a month.
We share that in common then! I much prefer to do things "normally," but it still ends up being fun to briefly go back to the old ways at the end of the year :)
I just posted a comment basically stating the opposite, that I miss the straight up singular game reviews over the peripheral/PC Hardware reviews. He's quite literally reviewed over a thousand games though so I get it. I just miss the game review focused videos, that's all.
@@jonbourgoin182 Same, I'd love to see more game reviews, however I think that was one of the things that caused Clint to burn out a bit. I wouldn't wanna see that happen again, so just gotta take what we get :)
That 3 yr old will always faintly remember that train game, and will spend a couple decades trying to find out what it was. I know... it happened to me as a kid with Cannon Fodder 2 lol. Took me 20 years to connect the dots.
Tell me about it. As a first grader, I played what I think was some kind of PC booter game that came on one of those massive 5 1/4" floppies on an IBM computer in school that involved progressing across and up levels of platforms to get to a goal at the top. I'm certain it was some kind of edutainment game because each platform had like 10 or so steps, and you solved math problems to progress. Once you got to one end of the platform, you'd climb a ladder to the next one. The levels above the first one had holes at some points which you could fall through and lose progress, and you could chose what math problem to solve out of an autogenerated selection of them, and the correct answer would let you move a number of steps equal to it. I believe the game had a two player component to it so it was a racing game in addition to a math solving edutainment game. I still have no idea what the name of that game is, I'm certain it was one of those games programmed by teachers/computer tech personnel in the school system and it never obtained the level of success the Oregon Trail did.
you're the reason I got into retro computers and into 3d printing (partially, my architecture teacher is also to blame.) I got a ender 3 and I'm planning on printing a callisto II from thingiverse and putting actual computer parts into it. Here's five bucks towards me (maybe) making two and sending one to you!
A Lack table enclosure will do you well with the Ender. Controlling your environment is crucial to getting consistent prints from month to month and keeping your bed levelling to a minimum. A good enclosure is the best way to prevent warping on larger parts. I was planning on making a retro-like computer at some point after I build an enclosure for my T-Rex (my 2nd large format printer). I was thinking a modern cyberdeck but Low Budget Tech has some neat desktop related ideas I'll have to crib from.
"VHS effects" is basically like modern retro sprites. It's "recreating" a look that never actually existed that people who weren't around at the time *think* was reality.
The last one is a pet peeve of mine, when devs mishmash a bunch of retro elements that make no sense together. The texture resolution is quite early 90s yet the models are way higher in polycount and the VHS effect makes no sense in this context, which gives you no sense of what it's meant to be, taking away immersion that should be key in a horror game.
Yeah, I 100% think the VHS filter is only there because the dev saw it on the Unity asset store or something, went "oh that looks spooky" then slapped it into the game without a second thought. I was going to be the teeniest bit charitable and say that the low res assets could be the dev "knowing their limits" so to speak, but the game appears to be internally rendered at a low resolution in general (notice the aliasing, when the VHS filter is turned off), which tells me that they probably were intentionally going for that PS1-esque aesthetic and bungled it. I'm not really sure why I'd want to be charitable towards a game that was pretty clearly made on the quick and cheap for a quick buck and nothing else, though.
@@TheSmart-CasualGamer That may've been the intent of the author of the filter, but it's still labeled as a generic "VHS" effect in the game. At the least, that makes me think the game dev thinks of it as just a general VHS tape effect.
I think this is another person who tries to copy or being heavily inspired the style of other indie dev who is known for horror games that are mostly influenced by PS1 survival horror, 80s slasher flicks, and the age of VHS home video (their games are also a little bit janky, but for some people this is the charm of those games) aka Puppet Combo
Man, how do you keep inventing ideas for videos after all these years. The nostalgia is appreciated, I'm 37 and grew up with and owned the majority of the stuff you got your hands on. Worked in IT for 15 years because of it.
I'm happy to say that LGR Christmas time videos have become one of the long standing Christmas traditions for me as an adult. Watching the first LGR Christmas video of the season is like putting up the tree or the lights for me. It's just not Christmas time without 'em.
SteamVR popped up since the game is built using Unreal Engine (easily noticed by the use of the default font) and by default, Unreal enables the SteamVR plugin. Not usually detected by developers that don’t have a VR headset. Source: released an Unreal Engine game on all major platforms (consoles and PC).
Interesting. I wondered why a few games I've tried recently start opening all the VR stuff, despite not being VR games. Is there any way to stop this from happening?
I was suffering pretty intensely from health issues a few years ago and couldn't do the 6 hour return trip to visit my family for the occasion. The next year they went out of their way to set things up for me to "fail" again and disinvited me late Christmas Eve. They've also cancelled visiting me for Christmas during this time. It's become a family tradition to find reasons Im a disappointment and setting things up so it's impossible for me to satisfy their (feigned) wants for the season. Contrary to how it may sound Im not complaining, nor feeling sorry for myself. It is what it is and ultimately it has given me clarity about the sorts of people my family are. The reason I mention it is just to give some weight to the sincerity of my thanks to you Clint for your Christmas videos. They've given me a way to enjoy the occasion over the last few years. Without them Id have had nothing Christmas-ey to enjoy, and I've always loved Christmas. I find myself looking forward to seeing what shenanigan's the clones have instore for me in the same way a kid might get excited about his presents a month or so out from the day :) Thanks again :)

And why I finally had the good sense to skip mine this year!
