    I personally was not familiar with the term “junk” journal when I began making books and journals, but I do not disparage anyone who does use the term. There are many people who do not have access or the means to obtain original papers and supplies. Yet, rather than deny their creative spirit, they use what they have. Yes, words are important, and just as important are attitudes. As artists, let’s encourage and uplift the creative spirit in one another no matter what medium is used.

    • @CaterinaGiglio
      @CaterinaGiglio  2 года назад +1

Plus, if I make a lot of it and am including antique treasures that I found, I never want to just call it a “junk journal”-alas the algorithm knows the audience that would want to see an altered/handmade journal is also looking up “junk journal,” so I feel like it’s a phrase I have to use.

    I am just so grateful that as an artist what you share is discussed in art terms. I signed up for kind of a no stress fun little class…and the first teacher immediately, and repeatedly, says she has no idea what the purpose of gesso is. I have to tell you that stopped me in my tracks. I think it says much when an instructor doesn’t care enough to know what is being used or why. And I rather wish we could get away from the term “junk journal” also. So much goes into what is currently being passed as craft has no concern for archival qualities. I guess crafters don’t realize that journals, paintings or other forms of art will one day tell the story of what state we as a people were in in 2021. Or, maybe that not caring describes exactly who we are… Kind of frightening though.
    Anyway, thank you for being professional in your presentations!

    The reason the books are called Junk Journals is because years ago when making these books they were made out of junk mail. You know back in the late 60's and 70's everyone got a lot of junk mail in our mail boxes. Someone, and I do not know who, but someone decided to make things out of this junk mail instead of throwing it away. Of course books and journals have evolved since then, but the name has not.
