I think Steve was being very polite to the guy who was complaining about having to play BS gigs to get by.....I would've said he should be grateful that he's not asking "Do you want fries with that?" to get by instead of playing guitar. I've been playing for ages and am always very happy to get a paying gig playing instead of some other crap job that is miserable in countless ways. Thanks to Mr. Vai for putting these videos up, I always enjoy hearing/watching him play as well as listening to his stories and advice for us non virtuoso types. Cheers to him and hopefully he'll keep these coming as they're absolute gold. \m/
I just found these videos of Mr. Vai’s, and I have to say that I am profoundly impressed by his depth of understanding of the human condition. I have been enjoying his music since I went to some of the F. Zappa concerts in 1980 with him playing brilliantly. I had no idea that his understanding had become so deep, but I absolutely love it.
Steve, you have been a great inspiration for almost all my life, but that you are also the most nice, humble and sweet person there is is a great gift. Namaste.
Great lesson. The most valuable part was your answer to the question about his attitude. Important for every human not just guitar players. Beautiful that you took the time and answered that guy with such compassion and empathy. Truth with no bullshit. Brought tears to my eyes. I can be guilty of a bad attitude myself sometimes. Thank you Steve.

The ear/mouth gasm at 1:50 is amazing! Steve, your playing is so incredible. I have enjoyed the feel and intensity of your playing for over 30 years now. Thanks for all you do in music.

Some people call it "thinking outside the box".. "the box" being stringent to theory. But I have always found that "creativity" has no box... it just "is", in the moment. My 2 cents.
20 mins in and what Steve is describing is the basis of how I play. I wouldn't have a clue if I'm using a mode or whatever but I know I can move around the neck and create a different mood, 'Colour' is an awesome way to put it. So good to see a video leaning toward ear, intuition and soul rather than robotic break downs of other peoples music. Well done sir.
42:32 And here comes another one: ruclips.net/video/debSEQkMOs0/видео.html This time featuring dominant 7th, minor 7th, major 7th and sus chords. I played along myself yesterday and absolutely love the vibe! Great fun! Enjoy yourselves!
Your mind-blowing music made you a guitar hero, Mr. Vai..But these videos show your dedication to your fans and that's what makes you a legend..We truly appreciate it!
A million thanks. Having Steve Vai teaching me how to train my ears is just invaluable. So generous. So insightful. And so funny. The only snag is that he makes It look easy.
"Teaching others is an honour", "Do your best in everything you do" , "Eliminate the term BS". Memorable and wise. Thank you Steve. Oh! and thanks for all the advise on ear training! Cheers from Costa Rica, I'll be in your show.
The idea of singing the notes you are playing is the best lesson! I started doing this a time ago and it really made a difference on the way I learn songs. Checking tabs on internet was left behind. Cooler part is this lesson being given by Vai himself.
Imagine where your guitar playing and improvisation would be if you spent 5 minutes a day, for the next 4 weeks, intentionally listening to, and singing the notes you are playing - what Steve talks about in the first 15 minutes. Do it! I’m going to. What a simple, yet powerful addition to your practice routine. I absolutely love Steve Vai’s philosophy. What a gift that he gives us in this video.
“Eyes on your fingers.” You’re definitely a kindred spirit Steve! I have used this kind of finger memory to learn the algorithm solution for the basic Rubik’s cube as well. Thank you 🙏 for these insightful lessons. A private guitar lesson from Steve Vai is like something from a dream. Merrily, life is but a dream! I’m 50 now and really enjoying exploring my inner song. Music is it’s own reward Thank you for sharing in this beautiful gift of musical communication. One way to make the world a better place is to create good vibrations and pass them on. Nobody does that better than you brudda! Sincerely,Stormy Normy #sonicmantra
I agree. Anger is a useless emotion. When we get angry our brains release neurotoxins that actually make us and those around us feel bad. Our choice of emotions is contagious. 😷🎸
So many lessons in these videos. When I heard you read that comment at 1:12 or so firstly I couldn't believe someone would talk to you like that. I just wanted to say your response was amazing and a life lesson in and of itself. Thank you Attitude = outcome . I was recently laid off from my job and the minute I got home I dove into getting stuff done so I could spend the time working on reorganizing some of my guitar lessons, recording videos, and practicing . Negatives are positives in disguise !! Your way of talking reminds me of a mentor I lost earlier this year. He always had a way of giving advice that was right in line with how you think. Thank you so much
This is a remarkable lesson. I've been playing for decades and am getting so much out of it! He's very straightforward and open, this is a real gift to us all.
I honestly feel that when this quarantine is over I will come out a better person because of these alien guitar secrets and under it all sessions Steve is doing. From the bottom of my heart man, thank you!
A good thought, indeed 🌟 You can attach several other "life" inspiring/changing aspects, basically go beyond even music, on to the overall wellbeing for life & living - why the heck NOT! Quarantine, no Quarantine - one should develop habits, once focus is formed & blueprint is created.. Taking charge of whole life, few months & years down the line, one would be *amazeballed* where Life has reached, surprisingly creating & changing Versions of thy self 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 it's a streak to go by, and is rewarding beyond mere mind's understanding, and addicting in best form. 💫
So glad I found this, HI STEVE! You already know, Adam Jones from tool totally incorporated Bad Horsie into 7empest on new album. My brother Josh got me into you many years ago when I started being trained in guitar around age 12-13, now I'm 30, I started out with a lot of your amazing stuff, and in the past few years started getting back into your stuff. I love it all, you're truly blessed, and I learned the guitar part of the young kid who battled you in crossroads lol, while my teacher at the time played your part. You're rock solid and right outside the box in all the right ways. Thanks for your influence Sensai Vai! Wish we could jam sometime!
a loooong time ago I was lucky enough to meet & attend a Master class w/ William Kanengiser - I asked him a question - cuz he played the classical guitar parts that Ralph Macchio acted in Crossroads - and I asked about Mr. Vai - what is he like? Mr. Kanageiser said he is just a great guy - a gentleman - who knew when to be the cool jazz / Zappa guitarist or the Rocker type ! Mr. Vai was in the phone book back in the day! Well Here is total proof that the guy is a true musician, a scholar & a gentleman - i.e. Free of ego and willing to share the knowledge of his craft! Thanks Mr. V
I just spent time writing and recording my solo for my song Son of El Elyon. Using a plectrum on a classical is tough. I almost bought a Charvel DK24 HSH to make it easier on myself.
Steve: What you're doing now with these videos is an incredible offering for us all. You're an influence of mine for sure but I cannot play your stuff nor do I want to. My hands are just different plus I'm afraid the universe will perceive me as a storage medium lol. Much love, Brother! Let's pray to Lindsay Buckingham that everyone stays healthy and happy out there. :)
I remember reading interviews and lessons from Steve in the 80's. I never thought I'd be able to watch video of his lessons for free!!!! Awesome! And he offers up advice that can change your way of thinking about things and help you create a positive lookout. So a music teacher and life coach, who'd have thunk it!!
If something good came out of covid 19 it's the Steve Vai lessons and chats!!! Such a smooth style of playing I always had a rough style especially when not recording you're very melodic but a hint of raw energy and raspy tone. Thanks for the ear training lesson!!! -Carlos Right on;)
A lesson with Steve Vai?! I have been waiting for this for decades. Pity I am an old man and cannot become an accomplished guitar player. Still, I watch it with wide open eyes and ears, and also appreciative to this fabulous opportunity!
Steve, a question: do you happen to feel you don't like your music after you finish writing it? I happen to feel excited many times when writing a song, but when it comes to listening to the material, the excitement turns to misery. Will you, please share a perspective to cope with such distress?
Hi Steve, This may be a strange question but very important i think: How do you eat during the day for optimal performance, sharpness, learning, creativity and practicing. So basicly what is your advice on a diet for optimal performance. This is not about not being a vegetarian. I was traditionally brought up with 3 meals a day, but I find myself not sharp, productive, creative for a long time after each meal.
I found myself wondering about the same thing... normally i during meals i try to focus on other aspects of musicality, or just listening to disks.. keep the mind engage.
Mr. A Mulder: I urge to try Intermittent Fasting with a Ketogenic Diet. You might find loads of info right here on RUclips with the most knowledgeables Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Eric Berg.

Loved the show... watched it last night in Singapore 3-5am... in a way thank goodness for this "lockdown" and thank goodness for generosity! Muahahahaha... Thank you Steve, I learnt a lot last night! Fyi guys, where ever you are in the world, approach these vids with kindness and attention and you'll learn a lot more, less reactions to emotions, Listen more... Stop bashing that "poor jazz guy"...
Wow, what an approachable, nice guy, Mr. Vai. I love your teaching about listening to the notes, feeling them! I started taking guitar lessons at 9 but soon learned I didn't enjoy copying others and reading music as much as being creative. I didn't want to get bogged down in theory and the math of music. I wanted it to be intuitive, to be so comfortable with the instrument that I could use it expressively and freely like my voice. So I taught myself different scales, by ear, found the patterns, learned how to shift everything for keys. I learned to sing with the notes like you were doing and eventually to play what I hear in my head. I enjoy more jazz styles and jazz fusion but have always admired your playing, going way back when you were Zappa's stunt guitarist, lol. I'm so glad to have just found your channel and look forward to learning more. I also really appreciated the commentary about personal improvement and mental attitudes, thought patterns and habits! Hoping to see more of you in the future. Stay Well! No Fear! Your playing is Superb!! A true Guitar Giant of all time! Unique and Expressive!! Thanks for Sharing
So nice to hear someone who shares my philosophy on life. Loved it. For The Love Of God played live at espania 95 (was it?) was just out of this world. So lovely to hear you share some of my outlook on life too.
90 people who disliked were conspiracy theorists and were literally searching for "alien guitar secrets" but ended up clicking on Steve Vai's alien guitar secrets.
Thank you Steve Vai. It is truly humbling to see and listen to you give such heartfelt pearls of wisdom...your music now sounds even more beautiful with the spiritual context that you just set with your words. Much love and gratitude.
It’s said to be careful and not to meet your childhood heroes because of the pedestal you create in your mind about them. It’s a recipe for disappointment. I can unequivocally tell you two things about Steve Vai. 1st. Is that he is every bit as grounded, real and humble as he comes across in these videos. Truly a great presence not just a great guitar player. 2nd. If you have the opportunity to meet him, take the time and do so. You will not be disappointed. As a child Steve was my superman, and as an adult I had the chance to meet him and I found him to not just be superman he is a super man. Corny I know, but it was a great pleasure and experience to meet your childhood hero and not be let down. I am more than sure, he understands this, and it is this integral connection to people and his audience that makes him great.
I had the honour of interviewing Steve a couple years ago. Probably the best interview I've ever done, we ended up chatting for two hours and I'll always be thankful for him to actually gift me with his time. There's so many things we just casually chatted about that didn't end up in the interview, I am very lucky and would kill to do it again :)
There is so many videos but it's great to hear with a Chanel that will not waste your time and it's a brutal good stuff with the best. Comes from the source
27:06 Steve gives the secret to the interval - some priest somewhere has the audio and he is running from a pack of wolves hoping to bury it for future generation to discover the treasure! ha ha ha
Man! This is greatest RUclips discovery I have made in awhile! Ive been playing for a long time but always hit a wall with theory and the use of my fingers correctly to get faster. Im back to practicing every day now. These are inspiring and suoer helpful! Thank you for making these! More please!
Narrator: Episode 5: Introduction: In this Episode, Steve deconstructs how the obvious but seemingly impossible to find way on how to play with feeling by using your own body perception of reality rather than your head. Just like common sense, the things Steve says in this episode are barely talked about but always present.
Wish there was youtube when i was a teenager learning to play . Golden tips and methods .frankly youngsters it's not to be taken for granted. Having this generous and prolific lessons from the master. All u need is a guitar an amp and time .thanks mr vai

Thank you Steve for these videos. I am coming late to the party, but what a treasure it is to have these extensive videos of your instruction. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this.

Agreed, its a shame how many over rated guitarist list he's on literally the reason I started playing the guitar, Vai is the shit.

Idk. Not everybody likes Steve Vai? Totally fine and normal to have an opinion
because I dislike the fact that there aren't enough hours in the day to get close to what he can do without even thinking about it.
As much as I like his music, I'm a fan of his philosophy on life too. Being a nice and content human being is more important
be excellent to each other
Love is the only truth in our world.

i gues its his experience of life rather than a philosophy!!

Great! Thanks!
Your mind-blowing music made you a guitar hero, Mr. Vai..But these videos show your dedication to your fans and that's what makes you a legend..We truly appreciate it!
This lesson is pure gold. Never been into Vai's music, but his knowledge and wisdom is incredible
have been playing for 45 years, I still get inspiration from these videos..
Raise your hand if you're just learning what a humorous, kind, humble, generous soul Mr. Vai is. Legend!
Great philosophical perspectives also Steve....”When you want what you have,THEN you’ll have what you want.”... Simply beautiful.🙏
I agree. Anger is a useless emotion. When we get angry our brains release neurotoxins that actually make us and those around us feel bad. Our choice of emotions is contagious. 😷🎸
Algorythm for a Rubiks cube...omg I just skeeted myself
Thank you for Saturday, it feels like I've seen somebody really play the guitar for the first time. And the combination with the MO is just pure magic
Steve Vai: Does literal sorcery.
Also Steve Vai: "I chose an easy one to play for ya."
Me: o-0
Thank you so much
The Internet is Awesome... We're experiencing life with Steva Vai at this very second.
Yeah Internet is the tool nowadays
sunriser2020 So true while he is with us. That’s why it’s so good. Is it any wonder he has so many fans
I’m a few seconds behind but it’s still awesome AF
This is a remarkable lesson. I've been playing for decades and am getting so much out of it! He's very straightforward and open, this is a real gift to us all.
I honestly feel that when this quarantine is over I will come out a better person because of these alien guitar secrets and under it all sessions Steve is doing. From the bottom of my heart man, thank you!
With that intention that's exactly what will happen. Never stop growing, and remember to internally give credit to yourself as well. ^-^
A good thought, indeed 🌟
You can attach several other "life" inspiring/changing aspects, basically go beyond even music, on to the overall wellbeing for life & living - why the heck NOT!
One of the best videos I’ve seen on RUclips for a while, thank you !
Wish we could jam sometime!
this is my favourite channel, so much good information and great delivery too
I just bought your book! Arrived today, very excited to read it.
Which Book?
Which book is this?
a loooong time ago I was lucky enough to meet & attend a Master class w/ William Kanengiser - I asked him a question - cuz he played the classical guitar parts that Ralph Macchio acted in Crossroads - and I asked about Mr.
I like the sound of a pick with a classical, nails sounds best though.
Buy the DK24, youll definitely like it.
I ended up getting an RG-550PM on Jan 1st. First purchase of the year. :D
The 1:12:10 - 1:38:40 part made me cry. Can't say enough how much I appreciate these words. Thanks, Steve.
Wisdom, just pure wisdom. Especially in this day and age where so many people only dream of being famous (e.g. via RUclips, Tik Tok, etc).
I am sorry didn't find this vídeo earlier. Thanks Steve. Great show in São Paulo 2023. I enjoyed every aspect of it.
Você é incrível! Um dos melhores!
-Carlos
Right on;)
I can't thank you enough for this Steve. For me, who has never had a teacher, getting lessons from one of my heroes is the best thing ever. THANK YOU!
0:00 I used to played this album full blast to get to sleep from noisy Neighbors. Lol. The best White noise therapy ever!
Some of the best life advice right here.
just a phantastic lesson, absolutely my way and style. One has no time for short answers or videos for the algorythm
Eric Berg.

So many great players out there and Steve Vai still stands out. When you hear a song you know who is playing.
This is the coolest shit ever. Loved seeing his modern primitives set at STARMUS in Norway 2017. Also shook Vai’s MASSIVE hands lol
Came to train my musical ear and left with extraordinary advice for life. Thanks for your time, Steve, it's greatly appreciated.
"Music has its written language, but it's audio." - Steve Vai.
I might want to make that a T-shirt. If I may...
Post a link, take my money. (Well, after next payday.)
I would definitely buy one
Language also has its.... well... :) written languages but it's audio! :P
I can make one for you guys
31:40 Pretty sure I had the same book as a kid. _Since I've Been Loving You_ is the first guitar solo I learned note for note all the way through.
That’s a green screen , he’s actually on Planet X
That does look like a green screen 😂
I had the honour of interviewing Steve a couple years ago. Probably the best interview I've ever done, we ended up chatting for two hours and I'll always be thankful for him to actually gift me with his time. There's so many things we just casually chatted about that didn't end up in the interview, I am very lucky and would kill to do it again :)
Yes officer. This guy right here. Premeditated murder is the charge.
Saying the things jazz guitarists have been saying for decades, "If you can't sing it whistle it!"- Barney Kessel.
What if you cant whistle
There is so many videos but it's great to hear with a Chanel that will not waste your time and it's a brutal good stuff with the best. Comes from the source
Can we get a whole album of you just matching the notes with your voice? Like a scat-solo album.
Tanks for your time, its a beautiful gift..
Long Life to the Master!
Dear Steve, you play Guitar so wonderful, they way you move your fingers on the Guitar is amazing.
Nice Guitar lesson.many thanks
27:06 Steve gives the secret to the interval - some priest somewhere has the audio and he is running from a pack of wolves hoping to bury it for future generation to discover the treasure! ha ha ha
Yea what happened there?
Forbidden knowledge.
@@waynesmith9990 😖 Computer says NO..searching for lip reading course
27:05 lost audio for a bit just FYI...but, great lesson......
Yeah, I thought it was just me/ my phone that cut out, but glad it's not. I'll go back and try to read lips while the audio is out! Thanks for mentioning this as well.
Thank you Steve for these videos. I am coming late to the party, but what a treasure it is to have these extensive videos of your instruction. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this.
