    hey kids! on weekend wankshop 135, uncle ben eller here is going to show you the REAL way to play Damage, Inc by Metallica, from their classic Master of Puppets album! This riff has been misplayed and abused for decades now. The official tab book is WRONG, as are all the tabs i have ever seen online! This is mainly concerning the double stop parts of the riff played on the A and D strings; everyone i see playing these parts has them as double stop slides, and that is simply NOT how its played. I'll even back it up with some live concert video proof!
    This is one of my favorite Metallica tunes from the album, so hopefully you'll get a kick out of playing it 100% accurately now. Good luck!

      Mark Keisler
      For me, when I first learned it I just went fully raw at it. The riff is obviously mainly hard on the picking hand. I downpicked all single notes and the e string and only alternate picked the triplets. Start off slowly like always. Just work on the repetition of the riff over and over again. It's one of my favorite riffs to play and once you get the rhythm you will never lose it. Last tip is to make sure, and this is essential in efficient rhythm guitar, that while you are slowly speeding up the riff your picking arm is loose and mostly still and that your wrist is doing most if not all of the work. I didn't take my time when I learned it so when I play the song and get to that part, my arm often is fatigued and stiffens up, making the riff harder to play and probably dealing some damage to my arm. Oh yeah. Make sure you are warmed up when you play the riff at speed.

    Even better video evidence Ben: Cliff em all. James and Kirk side-by-side pulling off the same exact riff. It's clear as day. No slides. Then, re-listening to original riff, it's all about the root. If that root doesn't move, it's conclusive. Headed to listen now...

    • @rickkelley4618
      @rickkelley4618 7 лет назад +1

      Root. Doesn't. Move. Great ear. I'd love to see James give lessons on the intricacies of the riffs. They do mix up some things here and there, but for the most part, James plays exactly what he recorded. I've always seen and thus believed that integrity to what was written seemed to be of utmost importance, and is probably what is most naturally comfortable to him. What James was writing/playing at 19-25 is just mind-blowing to me.

    Great thing about Metallica is we have a plethora of live videos both old and new to study. I was experimenting with some of the power chord variations last night and never could figure out this one. I definitely hear the heavy palm muting on the low E string at the A note which helps bring out the rest of the chord. There's probably some name for that scale I don't know yet, not purely pentatonic but maybe pentatonic with an added note there on 8th fret of the D string (F?) Is definitely an embellished blues scale. Maybe you can explain more, or I'm over thinking as usual. Well, off to practice all night at step dad speed. Thanks for the lesson!

    The end of the video is why I've given up using tabs since 2014/15. The tabs are always made by people who just can't the difference between what they play and what's being played and THEY NEVER DO RESEARCH BY WATCHING LIVE PERFORMANCES.
    I tried to learn "Give It All" by Rise Against and the Ultimate Guitar tabs were just so bad that I just broke out my guitar and played the fingerings I saw them use in the video of a live performance. It took some time but afterward, I was one of a very few people who could play that song correctly.
    I always try to get the rough idea by listening to the song, matching pitches, find the rough key, and iron out weird parts with videos of playthroughs or slowing down the track via RUclips's handy new playback speed feature.

    Hi there, very nice demo! What about the palm muted/ending with vibrato lick of Mop, I mean the little section at 1:27/1:28 just before James sings:" Come crawling faster", then at 1:32 before "Obey your master". I've seen it played on youtube in many ways, some near the correct manner, other far away.
    Even Metallica changed the way of playing it during years, at least James ( now live he uses to trill the last note/s instead of playng a vibrato one). I'd like your opinion and a quick lesson if possible. Thanx in advance! Cheers

    I agree with everything apart from the bit on G. After listening to you do the pyramid bit at 5:38, it just does't sound right. I believe it is done by bringing down the A string as well as the D, so it's like the opening 2 notes of how you play Leper Messiah. This, to me sounds correct.

I've learned the Sandman and Sanitarium on my own from reading tabs, but people tell me I need to learn chords and stuff related to music theory (which has me confused). I want to know what to know what is actually important to learn to play guitar. Thanks!

  • @irushforth
    @irushforth 3 года назад

    The bass tabs available are wrong here as well. After the slide down to F#, there's a sequence of three notes G-C#-D repeated three times before returning back to low E (or at the end, the last D is replaced by B for the start of the concluding power chords).
    The published tabs (and the RUclips bass covers) all have G-F#-E x3 instead, which is just mirroring what your pinky is doing in that part. But if you listen carefully to the bass on the album track (there's an Enhanced Bass version on RUclips), Cliff didn't actually do that!

      Crimson Ghost Like when Kirk kicks on very heavy wah live to cover up his sloppy solos. Solos he butchers live almost all the time or doesn't play at all. I mean I get it playing a live show gets tiring I've done them but still you should have your own music memorized to the point that it just happens no need to think about it.

    Problem is there’s plenty of video of them playing the riff completely different, they parmute the root note then do a full power chord slide from 6a 8d to 5a 7d.
    Don’t believe me, do exactly what Ben did, look at the live footage. And if u have the stems u can clearly here a guitar doing that, and a guitar doing what Ben is doing, and a guitar doing the double stop slides. That’s why people get so confused about so many Metallica riffs, because there’s like five guitars layered all playing the riff slightly different. Worked out pretty well for getting a sound people could never quite nail for some reason.

    Great video man. This riff is so fun to play and sounds awesome played right lol. Always annoyed me how different a onenote difference made the riff sound wrong. Also, I’ve notice Kirk and James play the verse riff slightly different between each other live. Kirk will slide down from the A# to the F power chord while James will jump from the A# chord on the root A String 1st fret to the F power chord on the E string. You can see this if you watch the Damage Inc Mountain View 1989 performance closely.

    Hi Ben, great work. May I ask you a quick tutorial ? I'd need something similar regarding a part that I think is always tabbed in a not totally correct way, I'm talking about the lick played on the song Mop by Metallica, the one at 1:27-1:29 just before the singing "Come crawling faster". The short palm muted part ... Tabs around the net or sheets as well shows it wrong in my opinion.
    Then I think Metallica too, plays it live differently from the studio version. Thanks in advance!

    Good stuff. It's so important to get left and right hand muting correct to achieve the diads and triads in these riffs. Otherwise they are just mush in a full band mix.

    Would it be possible for your next Metallica based lesson to show off One's middle section (The bits after the final "chorus" and before the heavy double bass riff)? I've rarely seen that entire middle chunk played incorrectly in some way either by combining James' and Kirk's parts or not playing the right notes/chords. I'd love to see someone show it off right.

  • @dr.awkward9075

    Can't you just play the A part out of open A with your middle finger hammering at 3rd fret G string?
    It makes it easier to transition to the 4th fret A string part, just saying.

    I'd love to hear battery. The riff after the solo has always sounded a little off to me when I play it. The way this riff is played sounds more similar to how battery should be played.

    I always played notes like this, but I still think that the notes in the upper part of the riff are not picked, but hammered-on / pulled-off.

    Ia also agree at 200 bpm or more, there is no chace Hetfield is counting out individual 16th notes for the fast riffs. Probably more like you showed!

  • @michaelangeloh.5383
    @michaelangeloh.5383 7 лет назад

    Yea, indeed if you keep believing tabs... ;)
    I learned to use my ears (and eyes on the artists) within the first year or two because of misleading tabs.
    Similarly with the... is it the 'Dyers Eve' riff... Where people kept (ironically) HEARING it like 0-1-0-1 or whatever, but it was just a side-effect of picking where you hear the pitch shift.
    Though, I have to admit I did play 'Damage, Inc.' wrong for the longest time because I didn't UNDERSTAND what was happening. I heard this power-chord going "wonky" and I couldn't wrap my brain around it, and it's also hard as an earlier musician to separate the notes, especially on older recordings and with distorted guitars.
    Also; I always found the riff to be like a variation on the 'Battery'-riff. - It's obvious that James Hetfield probably found a little technique he thought was cool and applied throughout songs around the same time. - That's usually what happens, especially when you're still young. - Just like a lot of 'Kill 'Em All' is basically very same-ish because it was written by a bunch of kids starting out. Impressive and innovative, but technically limited.

      the studio version is 2-3-2-3-2-3-2-3 right?

    • @michaelangeloh.5383
      @michaelangeloh.5383 7 лет назад

      No, that's what I'm talking about. - It's all the same note. - But every "second" note goes slightly out of pitch making people think that it shifts an entire half step when they listen too closely.
      It's really not thát drastic and I don't think they would bother to play it that way. They're not Iron Maiden.
      It's just straightforward one-note shredding like in the style of all their other Thrash-type songs.
