Thank you for emphasizing safety in your videos. 🙂 The details related to finishing a vintage instrument were very helpful. And.. talking about the flaws was very helpful. Especially understanding how you worked to overcome the big issues.
Love that colour blend at the body neck join on the back of the neck. Makes it look like the faded finish on the back of the neck of an old Gibson mandolin or jazz box with maple neck.
I do the same with frets, it take times but the result is always dead on, totally reliable. I have a little block with a ridge that fits the fret, so I know the profile is consistently rounded. Hand polish with rubbing compound, and finish with a cut linseed oil, and several paper rags cleaning until nothing shows up on the paper, happy days ;-) !!
Amazing Resurrection Derek - it's way beyond a Restoration in my opinion. You had to manage such a fine balance between making things "right" (perfect) versus making it accurate for something of that vintage. (Dirty buff) I know that you can see imperfections as you were the one doing all the work - but most wouldn't see it. And - as this thing ages, and hopefully gets played, all that will fade into the ongoing story of this beauty. Even the inlay - there are probably museum-quality case-queens from that era that came from the factory with worse mis-alignments than this one. Heck - even modern Gibsons straight from the factory show issues. Here's to a long and cherished life for this guitar.
I gotta agree with You about the StuMac fret files. Radius blocks. Crowning flies. Diamond encrusted type. They work. Compaired to do much crap On so many websites that aren't nearly as good.
This guitar is back from the dead, and if you're gonna make more projects like this, I'm all for it. Crazy repairs, refinishes on awful factory paint jobs, all that yummy stuff.
You made Gilsonite . It's the oldest colorant/ stain/ pigment the is next to dirt . It's super flexible and nobody uses it anymore . Well I do but it's a secret ! Don't tell anyone okay 🤣😂😂🤣 .
Yessssss! Big D you are very masterful in your approach to an instrument like this 25/50 Gibson. For my B-day I've told everyone I know to subscribe to your channel get ready for some subs bud! That guitar is spectacular I'd give anything to have a instrument that special I really would.
First off, love the Saint Javelin shirt! Slava Ukraini! She came out an absolute treat warts and all, Id be stoked if I could repair something to half that standard. Regarding sanding before staining, is 320 the highest you would recommend going?
For the love of god I don't understand why would anyone use nitrocellulose lacquer, it's the worse/ unstable finish ever! It looks good only for a short period of time from there it's all down hill LOL

The lord of the strings die it again. This is a beauty. Thx for sharing.
Quite a journey.
Thanks for letting us in on it.

yellow, brown or not... just incredible work. what a beautiful neck and piece of work. amazing craftsmanship
I love the yellow on the neck really.
You did very nice work Derek. You should be proud.

I loved watching this series
Good thing I'm not a millionaire, I'd be having you restore all the beat up 59 and 60 bursts I could get my hands on.

Amazing work!

eres un master amigo felicidades
Bravo. Keep up the good work on less than perfect guitars. Guitars should always be less than perfect. 👍
Great Job
Nice work 👍
I got your point about the neck being too bright. However, i think the overall coloring scheme makes total sens!
Looks bad ass man!
Did it again of course.

$10k of restoration work later... jk thanks for the vids. BTW you clipped the mic in the demo.
Must admit, fret and nut files etc - I prefer Hosco...don't like the StewMac stuff much...very pricey for what it is. Good job, anyway!
For the love of god I don't understand why would anyone use nitrocellulose lacquer, it's the worse/ unstable finish ever!

Haha. That’s the beauty of it. Now I have blended and old and new finish.
