Very enjoyable video Ian but the Dee has been very slow going this season so far. Doesn’t help having all those canoeists going about

Hi mate. I’m coming to fish this river and around this part of it for the first time in September for a few days as a first go. I’m not a hugely accomplished salmon angler so I’m expecting to try my luck. Broad question but could you give me any advice on how to approach it in terms of setting up. Great video by the way.

Thanks, sorry for the late reply. It would really depend on the height at that time of year for fly choice but a floating line with 5ft of slow Sink tip and then get Martin to choose a fly for you. Don't be afraid to try something really small like a size 12/14 stoats tail if nothing happening, the older fish would go for them before something bigger I've found.

Hello Ian looking forward to you videos .
Are you able to say what line and tip you are using....
Do you think it alwaysneeds to be a heavy density for early Spring?
Cheers, safe wading....from an an armchair somewhere in Manchester..

Good Evening Simon. Of course I can, I fish a Rio Long Head Spey Floater from probably mid April onwards depending on water temp. The latest video was February so I was fishing Rio Gamechangers. That was a Float hover intermediate Sink 3 with 20ft of Vidion 2/3 tip and brass/copper/aluminium tubes depending on where I'm fishing. I think in the spring it's important to be mid-low water but fishing as slow as you can ,that's where the lines and flies come in. You may notice in the spring I mend but summer and Autumn very very rarely. If i think its a bit deeper than my set up allows, I'll mend to get it down before it wings. I like it moving fast after April.

Sometimes in Canada we have to watch for beavers or muskrats, but ever a fleet of kayaks😃😃

Roe pot a shadow of its former self with the croys removed! That flotilla defo didn’t help you in the New Fawn as the fish lie tight to the Inchmarlo bank….. one or two you don’t mind but when it’s 18/19 it’s a bit shit! Keep up the good work, enjoy your vids!

They should be banned from canoeing during week days till after 5pm, or only aloud on Salmon Rivers on Sundays. Some Anglers are paying hundreds of pounds to fish a beat then there day can be ruined by some Lycra clad canoeists playing 360 turns in prime salmon pool lies.

Cheers Sean. Martin didn't want the croys reinstated, he thought it gave better fishing all year round. I personally think from memory it would have been better to reinstate as you had more control over the fly in higher water. It was a bit low all round unfortunately but we might give it another shot this spring if work permits. Are you going to get a cast this year?

Hi yes I'd agree they've actually got a reasonable agreement on the Dee which is apart from Wednesday afternoon and Sundays they stay away from the river . Martin thought the flotilla on the Saturday were from out of town unfortunately. 👍

Many complain about canoeists but i don't mind them.I,v caught fish lots of times after they have gone through and stirred dour fish up.I really did hate them when i Trout fished though...

Good Evening Dave, don't really mind them as long as they go through a pool quickly and without too much disturbance, unfortunately on the Tay had too many jump out and swim about in front of me which is a bit inconsiderate.

The river must have public access seeing the people on the river in Kayke's

@@scottishoutdoorlife Once again I've caught telling lies.
I have found many videos with fishermen fishing from motorized boats in Scottland.
I will say again go look at the videos on RUclips about drift boating and Mackinze drift boats or like Willie boats in Oregon

Nice video, but you had also payed for the kayakers?? This is one of the reason that I never fish a river where this "tragedy" is allowed

Hi Marco not sure where you are in the world but it's a sign of the times now here in Scotland and only worse since Covid. Where are you from?

@@scottishoutdoorlife Sorry for my sarcastic humor, but when I share the same trouble I turn into a devil...I'm from Italy and I travel all around the globe (now partially!) for the anadromous, and I can't understand this unrespectable behaviour. We pay for the rent of water, why they don't? This is in the worst side of view....Thanks for reply. I wish you a superlative salmon season, mine has started very bad.

Thanks, my season got of to a dreadful start losing 7 fish in a row in the spring but picking up now. All the best and I hope your season picks up. 👍
