    I was not a fan of the DF64 Gen 1... can the DF64 Gen 2 by Turin redeem it's predecessor? I was not excited to make this review, but I was excited by my findings after I made it. Is this the best coffee grinder for filter and espresso under 500 bucks?

    For filter coffee I bought a Fellow Ode Gen 2 at the beginning of this year to replace my 10 year old Baratza Encore and I’ve been very pleased with it. Until a couple of months ago I had been looking for nearly two years for a single-dosing candidate to replace my now 11 year old Baratza Vario+ that I’ve mostly used for espresso and just felt I could never find quite the right replacement with the appropriate tradeoffs. I was drawn to the Niche but being in Canada results in the final price after shipping, tax and duty being uncomfortably expensive. I largely agree with your observations about the original DF64 and had long ago ruled it out; even the DF83 too. However, the preliminary reviews of the DF64 Gen 2 had me doing enough head-scratching to think that I might’ve found my solution. Accordingly, I’ve had it for about three weeks now and gotta say, I’m very pleased so far. Like you, it made a decent shot of espresso from its first grind and it is just getting better as I get familiar with it. My only gripe is its sound (well louder than the old Vario+). Nice review and well done. Thanks.

    3:35 I think the exposed set screw is actually a useful feature because (and I dont mean to nitpick but I saw it in this video too) its used to set your true zero on the grinder. for me, positioning the arrow over the spout gives me an inaccurate reading for where the true zero actually is. I can find the point just before the before the burrs chirp and then move the arrow to where the zero on the dial currently is. the exposed setscrew makes it easy to clean the grinder and reset that true zero, and is useful for the different tolerances in manufacturing that may cause different people to have different true zeros. I will say that my burrs were pretty misaligned from the factory but some aluminum foil shims fixed it nicely. I agree that bellows can be unsightly sometimes but I think someone should make a 3D printed lid of some kind, the anti-popcorn feature works really well anyways. personally i use the bellows but frankly its just for fun, it makes like a 0.05g difference since retention is so little
    aside from the noise IMO its hard to recommend a 64mm single dose grinder that's not the Gen 2. a consumer will end up paying SO much more money for the same exact performance from another grinder aside from the quieter function. Like the Lagom p64 for example, you can buy the Gen 2 + the Option O mizen burrs for less than or close to half of what the lagom costs for exactly the same thing - a single dose 64mm grinder that has an all-metal construction (minus the RPM control, noise, and tiny bit of plastic on the df64 but frankly rpm control isn't worth the extra $1000+ I can just use an inline AC dimmer if I really wanted it lol). For $400 you really cannot beat the value here and I think the df64 gen 2 should be the automatic recommendation for people looking to get a near-endgame grinder or a 64mm single dose grinder especially since a good flat burr grinder usually starts at like $650 and can easy clear $1000. This is people's hard earned money we're talking about and I think its very unfair for people to be suggested very expensive grinders when theres a new cheap grinder (the cheapest 64mm espresso grinder I've found too aside from modded ode 2) that gives endgame performance with all the necessary features for most home enthusiasts. I hope a gen 3 solves the noise issue but other than that I'm not sure what else they can add here, its really unbeatable for the price, build quality, and performance in the current market. AND the supply of them is rather high right now, unlike literally every other 64mm flat burr grinder thats either completely sold out for months, still in preorder, etc etc. espresso outlet is waiting for a restock but I know miicoffee has them right now and they will keep pumping them out without issue. If the noise is a dealbreaker for someone then sure they should buy another grinder but this grinder is the next niche in terms of the value and how it lowers the barrier to entry for an already expensive hobby. I upgraded from an fellow opus and that felt like it was worth $20, the df64 feels like I truly maximized my dollar

      I'm looking for a replacement for my 3 yr old Specialita, as the other day it jammed. In fairness I have never, ever, cleaned the thing, just used printed bellows to clear after each grind. Worked fine for 3 years, then...suddenly jammed. I pulled it all apart, thinking grinds were jammed, but nope, it seems it's the motor. Getting very hot and overheating. Let it cool down it works again. Not sure I trust it now, so looking for other options, as it's pricy to replace and I'm not keen on spending so much to replace with the same thing that broke before. In fairness the Mignon IS pretty quiet, so the opposite of this thing. If the Mignon does seize up again then I'll get one of these.

    Definitely do NOT mind the look - when it comes to appliances it's function over form all day. A lot of my kitchen is the "modern" black and stainless / black and aluminum look. If it holds up over time, definitely worth it. And, yes, I would always consider a burr upgrade - can make a big difference.

    I found that not using the collar on the grind cup still has some grinds missing the cup and getting all over the machine and counter. I would definitely say you want to use the collar. I grind with the collar then remove the collar when I want to flip the grounds into my 58mm portafilter. If you are using a standard 58mm portafilter, e.g. E61 group head, then the cup is a perfect fit.

The esp has more body, but finding the right timing and the sweet spot between sour and bitter was hard for me especially since I'd go between filter and espresso often. • @chrisdrake6635
    @chrisdrake6635 7 месяцев назад +10

    Chose this over the Niche Zero because I live in Canada and couldn't stomach the duty fees. I've had this grinder for about a month now, mine came with the DLC burrs installed from Coffee Addicts. Overall it's really nice, like you said it makes great coffee. You are correct that it is loud. The one area where my experience differs from the RUclips reviews I've seen is the effectiveness of the 'plasma generator', no issue for espresso, but when we grind for filter we are still getting quite a bit of chaf. I can't compare it to the gen1 but I honestly expected it to be a little cleaner than it is. BUT considering the pricepoint I still think the Gen2 is hard to beat and we are very happy with it.

    • @DaddyGotCoffee
      @DaddyGotCoffee  7 месяцев назад +4

      Chaff is really tricky because it comes down to so many factors. Roast level, burrs, relative humidity - this is going to differ slightly for everyone - on the whole though it’s a huge improvement over gen 1 no matter how you slice it. Agreed - hard to beat at this price

    • @jcee41
      @jcee41 6 месяцев назад

      Chaff is on the bean so it has to come out one way or another! For filter, I stopped bellowing into the dose because it seemed to be mostly chaff.

    • @DaddyGotCoffee
      @DaddyGotCoffee  7 месяцев назад +2

      I think this one comes down to if you are looking for a hopper style or single dosing. If you want to change coffees more often than once every bag, I would go with the df64. The eureka has some mods for single dosing but it isn't really built for it.

    I bought a DF64 Gen 2 because I had SSP MP burrs in my Ode Gen 1 but wanted to be able to more comfortably grind for espresso (plus I missed having the Ode Gen 2 brew burrs on occasion). So I swapped the SSP burrs into the DF64 and put the Gen 2 brew burrs back into the Ode.

Right now I have a breville barista express and have hated the grinder the whole time even switched to a cheap hand grinder and have gotten much better results , do you think the df64 v2 would be the best fit or should I keep looking? Eventually I will be upgrading my espresso machine to something that doesn’t have a built in grinder but is much better, but figured I should get a good electric grinder first

  • @dwillingham

    I’ve been using one for a week and it’s my first “expensive” single dose grinder. Before this I had a regular conical burr OXO grinder for filter coffee only.
    I have enjoyed it so far. Noticed the rattling you mentioned of metal on metal when the dosing cup is not seated perfectly. I don’t think it’s too loud personally. I have noticed when grinding coarser for filter coffee that there is still quite a bit of static and chaff flying out and sticking to the outside of the chute and grinder body.

    • @vikramjadhav3631

Would a Niche-type [clear] cover knock down the dbs to an acceptable level...say 70 or so? I am leaning towards the 64V, but only if it is much much quieter. A P64 may be my only recourse. My current grinder (Eureka Mignon Classico) measures in the low 80s dbs.

I do agree and also don't like bellows or doing RDT (the laziness comment really hit lol) Always single dosing, mostly running milk drinks but would like to do more straight espresso. I plan on doing filter/pour overs eventually but figure I could just get a hand grinder specific for that. NZ aesthetics are def better but not sure it's worth the extra ~$100. Is there much difference between the flat burr vs conical in this case? I am also intrigued by the idea of 64mm platform and upgrading with SSP eventually.

I think I may plummet for the Niche Zero, being based in the UK.I know its been around a while, and isnt super rated for Filter/Pour Overs, however.... NZ Pro's for me are Quietness, Style, Espresso shots review well - Cons: Burrs not upgradable, filter/pour over capability considered "Good", price. There is a limit to how good my coffee is going to taste at home, and I appreciate good cafe's with better rigs... so why am I still typing? Because... this Gen 2 DF64 provides a cheaper price point, Burr upgrade potential and could prob grind more than a single dose if i'm doing a larger Pour Over one day... it's just the sound. As a musician and producer my ears are rather sensitive to whining and irregular lurching motors... and at the end of the day, using it every day I think the smile of a calmer grind might just be worth it. #rambleover What did you buy?

So I am expecting my DF64 Gen2 in the next 4-5 days from Singapore. Really looking forward to it. We do a Moka first thing in in the morning (bought it 20 years ago - used it almost every day since), Aeropress during the day, and maybe the odd V60 so something versatile was called for. I've wondered about this as well and received some feedback over the months. P64 great build quality, low retention etc.. but expensive. Yet one tester noted how consistent it was to get same results across different beans/roasts. They also noted that a grinder like DF64 with same burrs aligned and dialed in would probably give similar if not almost exact taste in cup. Can say the tolerances in P64 allows one to 'eke' out a little more consistent results in the cup (seemingly) as well as better user experience-less hassle with retention etc.. Also from everything I've found out from user reviews is burr geometry matters the most. For instance smaller burrs with 'interesting'-good geometry can practically match larger burrs in more expensive grinders, especially with certain types of beans/roasts. The other key thing I come across often is one grinder/burr tastes great w/ a select type of bean/roast but another grinder/burr tastes better w/a different bean/roast so it's all a trade-off unless have 2+ grinders. Example a med. roast leaning toward dark cherry and semi-sweet chocolate tastes better on stock burr or a 'trad.' Italian grinder-burr vs. a more unimodal burr but then performs-tastes "worse" on a lighter roast w/ leans more toward 'fruit' want balanced acidity.

    I'm a moderate coffee user, normally I use moka pot, would like to have an good(ish) espresso machine in the future but from time to time I use French press.
    Currently I own a Timemore C3 Pro Max that does the work for me but takes too long and effort is high so I tend to use Nesspreso more often just to not grind it manually.
    I'm Trying to buy a good(ish) coffee grinder, something in the 400/600 usd budget (I'm from Argentina)
    I'm between the Timemore 064s and this DF64 Gen2
    I'm not looking to buy a grinder to change it in 1 or 2 years, I would like this to serve me for a long time and be useful, mostly for espresso/moka but from time to time for French press.

    Grinder Eureka Silenzio 1 year old

    Silenzio is unusable right now thats why I am going to get something else.
    I drink 90% espresso and 10% Turkish.
    My Silnenzio probably had some very bad quality check because since the first day it produced many fines, tried to shim him but nothing got fixed.
    Overmore the 3rd time I removed the bottom burr 1 of the 3 holes of the carrier got damaged. While getting it out 1 screw ruined the threads and now I will have to somehow fix it with a helicoil.
    I am in Europe
    How is the build quality on these things? Should I get 750E the DF83 v2 for 750E?
    In my mind I believe that getting a commercial grinder would be the best but I think they have high retention. (Fiorenzato F64E)

    Is this louder than a Sette? It sounds like a fantastic package, but as a current Sette user, I'm not sure my ears could take something even louder...

    The “ugly part” that you dont want its not only for getting the left over coffee out, its also mean to help cleaning the grinder and covering it from little insects like cockroaches oa any little things can accidentally drop in there, not sure if he puts it back to cover when hes done grinding and take it off when needed i dont think so seen hes like short cut, if so, why cant just leave it in there, for the look???? 😂

    The niche is the ugliest grinder out there. This looks minimalist.
