  • Despite Megadeth’s constant line-up changes, the band has been a constant force in both Metal and music in general. With the release of their brand new 16th studio album The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead, its time to take a look back at their career with a complete album ranking from the legends of Thrash.

Youthanasia for me. Something about that album at the time in 1994, it was spot on and remains a favourite.

In the UK the two Youthanasia singles got played a lot on the Friday Night Rock Show (radio), hosted by Claire Sturgess. The album is more melodic than others and the cover art was maybe controversial for 1994?Megadeth has superb artwork, the new album is a great image.

My favourite is still "So Far So Good So What". It's got everything. The epic and beautiful instrumental intro "Into The Lungs of Hell,", the iconic power ballad "In My Darkest Hour", the intricate "Set the World Afire", the eerie and mysterious "Mary Jane", the bad ass trio "Hook In Mouth", "Liar" and "502". A pure festival of dark and free creativity. If you are a true guitar player, you have to love this one. The voice only starts after 5:30 of album playing! Megadeth's finest hour. Jeff Young left his proud mark on the band. Awesome exotic solos. Chuck Behler's drums are tight and coherent, and don't try to reinvent the wheel. Production of the album didn't help, though. I like it how it is, but it's not easy for everyone to listen to. Definitely not a seller. But I say it as a compliment. I mean, the voice only starts after 5 minutes and a half of album playing. And the album is not that long. Talk about being confident on the quality of the music, and sending a big FACK off to commercial standards. Even the album's title seems to speak that truth.

*I do like the fact you added 'Hidden Treasures' (1995) in your list as well. The fact that a few decent covers are on it are what hold it back, or lower on my list.
I also added 'Kill em All' (1983) in my MegaDave/deth CD ranking, b/c Mustaine had such a major impact on the entire album in all the lead guitar solos, writing/composing style, etc.
Endgame had memorable Lyrics and *Face-Melting solos,* to go along with great composition of riffs, etc. every song is great, if not at least good/solid. I love this album for all the reasons that most Mega Dave/death fans regard 'Rust in Peace'.
There is No bad MegaDave/death album, but only good, and even better ones.

@@PhantomDeth i actually think he nailed it on the original version. it's got such a lo-fi quality to it that serves these songs well.

    • @PhantomDeth
      @PhantomDeth Год назад

@@austindolan7182 The original has charm.. These Boots I think is still best heard in its original form.. But the rest.. Man on a good system it's incredible. Gar is otherworldly, the remix/remaster really does show how the original mix undermined his work on that album.. He's a pioneer on that album and I don't think anyone has quite infused that element into the band like him since.. Nick was different.. He took enough of Gar to build his sound in the band from.. I don't think Jimmy really did on his 2 albums.. Vinny the guy on System was very close but lacked that extra edge to the drumming overall.. Drover I don't think understood the Jazz metal mindset approach of Megadeths roots.. Dirk on the other hand does understand.. He's only had one album so far but I think he has every potential to be up there with Gar and Nick.. And that's a legacy in itself to achieve.. I believe he can do that and bring himself like they both did... Whilst understanding the kind of madness Gar thought of in those types of parts.. What would he do here?.. Why?.. What effect does it have verses the traditional approach?.. Nicks more of kilter beats also aligning with a more Jazzy sound with a metal drive.. Dirt is all over the place.. His main interests in Metal are obvious Megadeth.. But grindcore black metal side project as well. But when asked what he listened to he was all over in genres outside of metal.. Rap, pop, classical.. But Gar is his personal favourite past drummer.. From Peace Sells.. Which is Gar sort of refined.. Compared to what he did on Killing.
Anyway.. The wonderful thing about the Internet is everything lasts forever and we can listen to every single version of an album in a few clicks... You can even listen to the completely different version of These Boots they recorded for the movie Dudes... Now that version is tippy and just cool to see how different the song can be done and the talent in the band to be able to do it.
Worth checking out if you haven't already.

Hey Brendon, been binge watching your discography rankings, and I love how you truly don't just go with the norm and stay true to your feelings despite them sometimes being "blasphemous" of sorts, haha.
I'm strange, I'd personally say my favorites are gonna be
#1 - Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? (It's an easy pick for me, I personally would take this over Rust In Peace, strictly based on the mix. That bass heavy mix on Peace Sells just gets me into it, the title track is infectious, The Conjuring is dark and haunting, Wake Up Dead is pure Thrash, even the I Ain't Superstitious cover is fun!)
#2 - Rust In Peace (A Prog-Thrash classic, up there with Voivod's Killing Technology in that strange sub-category of Thrash, and a classic of Thrash (and Metal) as a whole! The mix however just doesn't do too much for me, unsure why specifically, think it's the bass, just doesn't hit me like Peace Sells)
#3 - The Sick... The Dying... and The Dead... (this is my "blasphemous" pick, but I really loved it right off the bat! I still get the urge to re-listen to songs like Night Stalkers, Mission To Mars, Life In Hell, We'll Be Back, the Title Track. Phenomenal)
#4 - Euthanasia (A Tout Le Monde is so special to me, and even the somewhat odd Family Tree is a song I really like a lot, then you have Victory, Reckoning Day, etc, with Victory personally being one of my all time favorites of their's)
#5 - Countdown To Exctinction (again, similar to Euthanasia, this is close to being at Youthanasia's level, they're almost interchangeable, however Victory and A Tout Le Monde bump that up)
#6 - Dystopia (I'm gonna leave it at this, and just say I personally really like this one. I think The Emperor, Post American World, Dystopia, all are amazing songs)
I think Dave and the boys are really going insane lately, it's like a late-career resurgence in my opinion, I think we have a chance for the next album to reach Rust In Peace levels of quality, not saying it will... but there is hope.
Happy to have found your channel, sir!

5-9 are pretty interchangeable, but everything else I feel confident about. I don’t dislike RIP, I think it’s a great album, it’s just not the kind of Megadeth I really tune in for. I prefer that raw, heavy, psychotic style that they do. RIP lacks a lot of the evilness and unhinged feeling of a lot of their other music. Ironically enough, I go back to My Creation the most from that album. That’s the kind of Megadeth I like.

    15. Super Collider (2004)

    6. The System Has Failed (2004)
    5. Youthanasia (1994)
    4. Rust In Peace (1990)
    3. Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? (1986)
    2. Dystopia (2016)
    1. Countdown To Extinction (1992)
My list is kind of mixed in many ways, but I am like you that in my opinion, Megadeth don't have any bad albums, I like many of them more than others, but I found 'The World Needs A Hero' a bit drab and found it a bit annoying, except it has a few decent tracks on it, and 'Risk' and 'Super Collider' were great in different ways, but I don't find them as bad as others say, but they aren't brilliant either, where as from 11-14, they don't hit the Top 10 either, but my Top 10 includes the new album, but I put it in the middle of the list, because I think it's still early to put it higher than my place and I enjoyed 'Dystopia' as a high album for me, and 'Countdown To Extinction' is my number one and will always will be, but as I said with other classic bands, it's hard to rank many classic albums from big bands like Megadeth, Iron Maiden or Bon Jovi even, as they are all good, in many different ways, and when you have 16 or 17 albums, on a list, it's not setting stone for me, and I also placed 'Hidden Treasures' on here, as well, because I think it deserves a place on my list and 'Angry Again' is a fantastic song from that EP as well, and I think 'Hidden Treasures' needs a bit more love, despite that it's not in my Top 10, but it's still amazing and occasionally I do swap them around, depending what mood I am in, but it's good to have these rankings and make fun by doing them, and so here is my list of where I rank the albums and how consistent they are in my list for me.

I don't have a strong enough opinion on the rest to rank them.
I know Risk being high up is an unpopular opinion, but honestly I believe people shat on that album because it wasn't thrash. I approached it with a different, less dumbass mindset fully knowing it's not RIP and I honestly really enjoyed it.
KIMB being at number 1 is also an unpopular opinion, but I find the riffs and overall songwriting to be very straightforward and yet very unorthodox in a strange but effective way, and that's just what I like. It's the only Megadeth album that has stuff I struggle to play (other than Poland's solos anywhere else) and it's the one I have the most fun listening to and attempting to play too.

Yeah personally they don’t have a really bad album , love Megadeth , very enjoyable ranking , keep up the great work 👍🏻 I did revisit Flo on the wall the other day and it’s not really improved to my ears , what in earth did they do to Brian’s vocals , sounds like he’s singing in a cupboard . I get that his voice was probably struggling at that point but they didn’t have to shove him right down in the mix , terrible . It’s always annoyed me that bands allow their hard work to be ruined like this , why put something out that sounds like shit ? The material isn’t that bad and it would certainly have been much better with a decent mix

are very good then the flow of money kick, starting a family, raising kids, mortgage and lack of interest of the young competition mind and ego almost all melted.
All these factors play big in someone's musical inspiration.
