  • These two rifles just scream to be compared to each other. The Inland M1 carbine modern manufacture versus the Ruger Mini 14. So we decided today to do a 100 round shoot off at 50 yards as well as a shoot off at 100 yards and check accuracy & function including mag dumps.

I own both of these rifles as well as the M1 Rifle. The carbine was the AR-15 of the day. In some ways better. If you have a trained man, hand 'em a M1 carbine and say 3 bandoleers, he has 300 rounds of ammo in 10 round stripper clips. It takes me about 5 seconds to load 30 rounds. It's ready to go again. With the AR or Mini? You'd better have another mag ready or you're down. As long as I can see you, you're probably hit. So 200 yards is no problem and It'll be enough for a kill. At 100 yards it has as much energy as a 357 magnum at the muzzle. The Koreans used them until recently. One of the best carbines of all time. It's also a hell of a lot of fun to shoot. As long as you can get the ammo.
The Mini is also an awesome rifle. Between the M1 rifle and the Mini-14? I'd take the Mini. The M1 rifle is heavy and the ammo is heavier. A lot heavier than the 223. They both have very good actions. They won't let you down. Just make sure it has grease. Yes, grease. Not a whole lot. The M1s they used to use axle grease. I also use axle grease in the WW II era P38 and it works a lot better. Oil isn't enough. Better than nothing, however you want grease to hold it there. Change it out every year or it'll get hard.

A lot of older ethnic minority guerrillas in Myanmar (Burma to us old timers) still use M1 and M2 carbines to fight the oppressive Tatmadaw. The M16 is more effective in many ways, but the carbines continue to have devoted users out in those jungles. They must be pretty good.

While station in Boise Idaho with the marines I came across a very unusual version of the M 1 carbine at gun dealership by the name Parcells (spelling is questionable) this carbine had been modified by the Melvin Johnson fire arms company, it was rebarraled. To 221cal. Cartridges , I believe it was called the 221spitfire. It the only one of this type I've ever seen, I aways wondered how this Cartridge performed, I understand it was a necked down version of the 30 cal carbine Cartridges. I would have liked tried it out on the range anyone else run across weapon? And what was its performance like.

I have an M1 Carbine and a Mini 14. The M1 carbine weighs a lot less. Ruger products always weigh more than they have to. The M1 is easier to shoot well, probably just the sights. This comparison is not fair to the Mini, however, as you are shooting the old "Pencil" barreled version. The newer thicker barreled rifle is less prone to heat stringing. As for reliability, the M1's weakness has always been it's magazine. If I were to pick one it would be the M1.. Just the Weight difference makes ALL the difference. If they trimmed 2 pounds off the Mini, it would be more viable.

I can hit a 30 inch steel target at 300 yards all day long with both. The M1 carbine was well liked because it was light and handy to carry. My Grandfather was issued one as a rifle platoon leader in WW2. The first chance he got a swapped it out for the M1 Garand. He told me that the first German soldier he shot with the carbine took 8 rounds before he went down. The next time out it only took one out of the M1 Garand.

The carbine is great for what it is. Carbine is only 5 pounds and the 30 cal carbine round is basically a pistol. The Carbine is designed to function as a long range pistol which makes it great for home defense. The 30 cal round will not travel through a dozen wall, yet is equivalent to a .357 Mag for knock down power.

Hi, have you ever compared the older mini like yours, (I assume 278 series) to the newer 580 series? It’s a pretty big difference. I installed a harmonic stabilizing rod on mine, giving it the appearance of an M-14’s gas rod extension housing, however the reason for installing is to ensure slightly better groupings. It worked. I also installed Wolff extra power chrome silicon springs, extended magazine release lever, Hoague stock, I fabricated my own brass deflector/picatinny rail, so I could low mount a Nikon 4-16 Active Target Scope, and an Ultimak Rail. Mine (580-1) is the variant without the bird cage on the end of the muzzle but since I’m stuck in a blue state for 5 more years that’s ok. I learned from an older gunsmith than myself how to tune the Mini-14’s trigger and bring it down to 3 pounds crisp. One thing anybody can do is use polishing compound and felt pencil tip shaped wheels on a dremel to polish out the mating surfaces on a mini-14, clean with rubbing alcohol before and after and re-lubricate/grease and that will take out some of the grit.
Oh, let me add, I understand Lancer Magazines (new kid on the block) has a mini-14/30 magazine either already out or in the works. Lancer Magazines have a steel top end mated/molded to a composite body in the manufacturing process. Supposed to be able to drive a car on top and it won’t deform…

      @Hornet_Legion 4 месяца назад +1

It's the 180 series with 1 in 7 twist barrel. Ruger was trying to get ahead of the game for that series by having a barrel that would stabilize heavy bullets.
With a 180 series I had once I mounted a scope on I was getting 1.5 inch groups with 168 grain factory match. I was getting 2.5 inch with 62 grain. Without a stabilizer.
With the 55 grain m193 it was spreading the shots out wildly. Pretty much typical behavior.
With 52 grain match handloads the bullets disintegrated out of the barrel.
The m16a2 HBARwas able to stabilize the 55 grain better even though it also had 1 in 7 twist but the barrel is pretty thick.

Mini-14 has a great reputation for feeding ammo and mechanical function. Several different companies made the m1 carbine. I’m sure if Ruger made m1’s they would function better. You can get mixed results with m1’s. Mini-14’s are way more consistent across the board. Mini-14 has no combat history with US military. M1 does with all due respect. My M1 Carbine, a 1945 Standard Products that I completely went through and changed the springs, used all new (old stock) bolt components, and lubricated everything. Muzzle and throat were almost nonexistent. The Mini-14 (in .223/.556) I bought was brand new and in stainless. So it has the latest and greatest barrel, action, etc. The results mirrored what this video showed. The M1 Carbine was far more accurate and an absolute sweetheart to use. I'll keep hammering away with the Mini but I'm surprised that Ruger has yet to erase some of the gun's somewhat shaky history.

Put a touch of grease in the charging track. Roughly 700 rounds downrange and rarely get through a 15-round mag without at least one FTE. Different ammo brands, different mag brands (including USGI) - same results. Zero issues after 500 rounds with the (used, but new to me) Mini-14 with Ruger mags. Maybe Inland's reproduction is just better. But for me, the Mini-14 wins hands down on the basis of reliability - no contest at all.

You are kind of biased and also full of crap. The .30 carbine has about the same amount of energy as the m193 out of the 14.5 inch barrel of an m4.
3300 fps with m193 can only be achieved in 20-24 inch barrel rifles.
It's an intermediate rifle round, not a handgun round. It has 1.5 times the energy of a .357 magnum. Even if the .357 magnum is shot from an 18 inch barrel it can only just match the .30 carbine if it is the buffalo bore hit loaded ammo
Which interestingly in .30 carbine buffalo bore has 125 grain load that develops 1200-1300 foot pounds of energy.
In momentum the .30 carbine carries 31 pound feet vs only 24 pound feet in m193 out of a 16 inch barrel.

Dave, the accuracy issue you're having with your earlier production Mini-14 has been largely resolved by the factory in more current models of both the Mini-14 and Mini-30, but they tend to suffer from a heavy and gritty-feeling trigger pull. That's easily resolved by removing your trigger group and sending it to Accuracy Systems of Byers, Colorado, for a trigger job that will give your Mini an orders of magnitude lighter and smoother-feeling trigger pull which also helps to enhance the accuracy of more current production Minis.

@@drdrake63 Basically any Mini-14 made after 2005 is nothing like the old ones in terms of reliability and accuracy, so that's going on almost 20 years ago. I'd grab one man, you can find some for pretty cheap. I know they say not to sell your guns, but I was on a budget and if you're gonna, I sold my old Mini-14 for a 2005 model and i've used it more than any rifle I have ever owned aside from my AR. Way more customizable too, the whole works. Absolutely love it, and literally every issue you had with it in this video would completely disappear even without aftermarket parts. Wouldn't even be a contest. Could you imagine if every M1 was replaced by a mini-14 in WW2? my god it would be unfair lol, it'd be comparable to the Sturmgewehr. Add a full auto option and damn. Guarantee they wouldn't replace a Garand with it though, maybe paratroopers would love it though.

...the Ruger mini can be had in 556 (223), 300 BLK, and 7.62x39 off the shelf, but can be custom in so may different cartridges such as 6.5 grendel, 6.8 SPC, and now 6mm ARC (maybe the best). and is easier to put on an optic...the M1 carbine is a good cartridge for it's limitations...I would wish a machined M1 carbine like receiver for the Ruger mini for a smaller footprint, using AR mags...the stock mini's barrel is too thin so much barrel whip, and heats up faster (more powder, and faster-hotter burning powder)r so greater down range dispersion of the bullets...

I bought a Series 186 Mini-14, manufactured in 1994, in February. Since I had heard about accuracy concerns with early Mini's I bought an Accu-Strut and an Amega scout rail and installed them before sighting it in, so I don't have a before and after comparison, but what I can tell you is that my Mini shot a 1.5 MOA at 100 metres before I got run off by hungry mosquitoes, so I wasn't able to fine tune it. They say that the newer models with the improved barrel are more accurate. Frankly, I like the looks of the Accu-Strut on my Mini-14.

The MI carbine was made to compete with the German 9mm sub guns . The comparison should be .30 to 9mm . The .30 was far superior and full auto did not make it a better weapon being to hard to control the bursts. Quick fast and light made the MI CARBINE perfect ! The German paratroops had 9mm sub guns , the US found MI carbines jump worthy and even had a folding stock MIAI , just for the paras .

Your all wrong about why the M1 carbine rifle was cycled so much at the QC phase of assembly. It was done to insure that it would cycle repeatedly, not for break in. Cast over to the left? Your the one canting the rifle, not the rifle.
The new Inland carbines are hit and miss. Contrary to your remarks on break in, the rifle should have been working when it went into the box and should be able to run dry. Your using the wrong ammunition in your Mini14. You should be using a 55gr bullet. The heavier bullet requires a faster twist rate than the Mini14 comes with. Your also wrong about the M1 Carbine being quickly and cheaply made. It like the M1 Garand, BAR, M1919A3, M2 .50 machine gun were designed for mass production at the volume that they were produced. They weren't cheep to build. What was 40.00 in 1941 in today's money? I have 4 M14 rifles built on forged recivers today. I broke 2 Springfield armory M1A recivers shoot 2,000 plus rounds a month through them. The only reason I have a investment cast reciver Mini14 is because that's the only way it comes. I'd say if you shoot that carbine enough you'll have problems with it.

The Secret Of The M1 Carbine...
In War with people Shooting at you , It was to easy to pick up a Garand.
But you guys have got no excuses.
The 30 Carbine Round is a 32 magnum tapered to a 30 cal.
To this Day The only Strait Walled Wildcat of all time.
Even CMP says we dont go over 200 yards because of bullet drop.
    Thats Sad !!!!!
They cant see the bullet is a foot high at 250 setting or 2 1/2 feet high on 300 yard setting .
look at the gap between 250 and 300.
1 look At the carbine sights and I knew they were Tommy gun sights .
But the increments were right on at 100 and 200 yards and followed suit except for gap between 250 and 300 yards.
I imediately grabbed a center punch and eyeballed the gap and then drilled a notch
for the bearing to grab worked good .
I grabbed a office chair and targets and ducktape and headed for the hills
with my contractors wheel measure .
My sons carried them out to 900 feet 300 yards forgot the tape and left targets rolled up
on ground about 4 inches tall, I told them forget it that will do.
We took turns shooting the seat 21 shots in 1 foot group 3 fliers 2 nicked the side with 2 and
put 1 in bottom of seat .
I took 3 shots at the 4 inch roll of targets landing all 3
It was raining and wind was blowing and i had a spring flue ,
    I called it a day...
I went out yesterday and did 1 foot groups at 4 and 500 yards on my 400 notch i put in .
and a magazine at 500 yards at 1500 feet .
missed 1 shot on paper both being 1 foot groups
So guys Your 250 is 300 yards on the money.
center of the gap between 250 and 300 is 400 yards dead nuts on .
and the 300 yard mark rear notch dead on at 500 yards .
I could do head shots at 500 yards and be very productive.
Just take your time until sights steady on target.
    Patience is a marksmen!!!!!
I cannot Believe it took 80 years to figure this out
in Korea at 300 yards they were putting rounds 2 feet above their heads and yes
    they kept coming .
If they would have used the 250 yard mark at 300 yards they would have blown their
    heads off.
To top off my day I had a piece of galvanized square tubing 5 inches tall 4 inches wide of 1/8th inch thick painted light orange .
carried it to the 500 yard target and walked back thinking it would take a thirty round mag to hit it.
I hit it with 1 shot and tumbled it .
walked back out and got it.
The bullet punched the first side and stretched out the second side like 1 1/2 inches,
like grabbing your tee shirt with 2 fingers and pulling it out 1 1/2 inches .
the bullet was a flat 1/2 inch wide piece of lead and copper ring on back
laying were the tumbled tube was at .
So HUAH gets the job done at 500 yards.
So now I am setting here with the shakes Totally in love With my scoped
    Plainfield Commando Paratrooper.
I played dress up and picked up a M2 stock bought a set of sights steel air cooled
    hand guard
and extra steel spring stock on ebay lol.
to shoot the M1 carbine the way the GIs did
and its like I brought home a new puppy and have to love it too .
Even being a unruly pup and kicking as hard as my M1 Garand .
Im gona have to buy another carbine so I dont have to switch the sights back and forth .
    God help me
I was going to buy a folding Choate stock too.
Im blaming all you guys on the youtube CMP and all you US military And carbine owners.
For not figuring this out a long time ago.
Ive owned my scoped carbine since 1980.
Where 1 goes We all go.
And it wont be prying my cold dead fingers off of it .
It will be over their DEAD BODIES !
I call my Carbine my Rockola The Bitch.
I call my M1 Garand Devil Dog Shooting Team Rifle Krissy
    after my wife .
Shes the Hottie from which there is no Escape.

It was intended for service personnel (cooks, truck drivers, laundry men, maintenance, ) non combat troops. The 5.56 was created for infantry. When USA bureau of ordnance showed Stoner the 5.56 he said that it would be unrepentant. Due to the ball powder used.

The Ruger mini 14 rear sights suck! They are cheap plastic, and do not stay fixed! They are loose, and you do not get a consistent sight picture, as the rear sights will move! Even the after market sights suck, for the same reason! Why in the hell doesn't Ruger, and or the after market sights come in al l"STEEL"?!!! No, they put the cheapest material they can come up with! I had a mini 14, and at a hundred yards, it would group about 8 -10 inches, and some times a little less. Solely because of the sights! Never had a feeding problem, or failure to eject, or other problems, just that it was not as accurate as it could be. A Friend of mine had a brand new one, and it shot the same. He wasn't pleased with the performance either. I would not want to depend on it for survival, in any situation, where any distance of any measure was involved! Would I buy another mini? NO! Maybe a way to get a floating bsrrel, would improve the acuracy some. But it still would require some real rear sights, instead of the toy ones Ruger seems determined to use! Since Ruger still has it's head up it's lower orifice, hopefully someday some of the after market companies will make an all steel sight that is a direct copy of the M14! Then I might think about buying another mini14. I would like a .30 cal, in the 7.62 by 39, or if Ruger would make a real "Mini 14" in .308.! But if the sights are not better than the cheap crap that is on them, no deal! Oh well, I would not be surprised to see Ruger go to the dark side, and partner with China! They make cheap plastic parts also! I only consider the mini 14, a plinker anyway, due to it's caliber. I isn't even a good coyote, or other pest rifle, due to it's cheap poor qulaity rear sights, and poor accuracy!
