- PC Ben Hannam was found guilty of membership of banned far-right extremist group National Action.
He was also convicted of lying on his application and vetting forms to join the police and having documents detailing knife combat and making explosive devices.
Hannam had been working as a probationary officer for the Metropolitan Police for nearly two years before he was exposed via a leaked database of users of an extreme right-wing online forum.

People lose or do not get jobs in a myriad of professions because of their online presence and the things they post.
The fact that can’t even vet their own properly, doesn’t instil much faith in all the other areas of their professional performance.

I love seeing stories like this, having been refused entry to the police twice due to my "poor credit" rating, it fills me with joy to see that as long as you have good finances, then the police will let you in... oh and that includes neo nazi fanatics, kidnappers and murderers! Yeah they said that too! I'd love to ask them about the recent high profile cases involving serving officer's like this 1, think they place too much emphasis on generalising people like me with bad finances. Said I could be open to corruption and bribery due to being in debt and my integrity could be compromise and they didn't like that kind of thing! All seems a bit backwards to me.
All my CCJ and financial problems are now behind me, however now I know how judgmental and even shallow the recruitment procedures are, I'm in a way glad I didn't get accepted.

I haven't read the report, but I think the conclusion that other forms of bigotry were much more prevalent than racial bigotry. One single case is not enough to show that racism exists at an institutional level. Though the report has been highly criticised, even by the people said to be "contributors" to the report. Some may even call it a cover-up.
@@Competitive_Antagonist Against my own better judgment, I would recommend reading up at least the press summary of the report. In a nutshell, it's tainted with gaslighting, red herrings and the on-brand rightwing victim blaming.

Police need to figure out a way of psychoanalyzing their people more thoroughly. There needs to be more than just form filling. They need to be questioned hard, with gotcha questions designed specifically to stimulate responses which offer all the body language and sentence formation cues which tell you how honest they are being.

A good reputation takes a lifetime to build and only seconds to destroy. They need to put the effort in to eradicate corruption at the recruitment stage in order to get the trustworthiness for anti-corruption people to want to join.
All police officers have a chip on their shoulder, all were bullied when they were young or subjected to some level of violence or witnessed violence within their family circle which pushed them into a career where they can cause harm behind the wall of the law!

With no one left to administer who will do the day to day things we all rely on. There all criminals now as there is no longer any deterrent. In fact the bigger the crime while in public office the better the chance of a cabinet job. We need a system of recruiting or electing 25 or 30 new ones while the new judiciary jails the last lot until there all replaced. And limits on the service times in public office. Something drastic along those lines is the only fix now.

I was surprised to hear of his conviction. He was very interested in the 1900s, loving it's music and work ethic and style. I never imagined he got himself roped in something like this. He kept talking about music and movies from that time. Mentioning authors, actors and musicians that were popular back then. But he didn't seem racist (I've had *one* conversation with him that made me uncomfortable) He would almost always be surrounded by all sorts of ethnicities and was on good terms with them from what I saw. An investigation into his duties also revealed no bias according to the investigators. I'm just shocked about what crowd he mixed himself in. I never knew about all that neo-nazi stuff.

@@jo18533 Sure. What does that mean though? The investigation doesn't trust that. The public doesn't seem to care. I heard that his official duties gave no reason for concern. He seemed to give his duties proper seriousness and his views haven't affected his on duty decision making.
I'm concerned about my own takeaways. Should I be even more paranoid about trusting people? What if one they it turns out they were this or that all along. Will it chase after me years after I left all that behind?

Make it harder to get into the police. If police academies took people in for 4 years (half as long as it takes to be a doctor) then most of these thugs wouldn’t bother and the police would be much better. They’re just out to get these thugs off the streets and into their stations. Disappointed.

If there was a new European Nationalist Socialist Workers Party then that would be far closer to being Neo Nazi than National Action could ever be. True Nazi ideology is complex and takes some in depth study to fully understand.
Banning the National Action political group was no more than political correctness and denying the freedom of speech. If NA was to be replaced by the British Liberation Party with the aim to reclaim and restore Britain as truly British no doubt the likes of Priti Patel would be demanding another banning order etc. etc.
