On a double horn another way to tell is to pull out one of the valve slides, that way you don't have to use your ear if you're having difficulty telling notes apart. For each valve you have two slides as explained in the video. Pull out the longest of the two of your first falve, and play a note with the first valve pressed down. If the air escapes (don't worry, you WILL notice), it's in F. If it sounds normal, it's in Bb.

I played horn many years ago, like over 50 years ago, for six years in junior high and high school and then 3 years in college (the latter 2 as section leader/1st horn) after I got back from a four year stint in the Navy after high school. A while back, I picked up a horn at a flea market that has the appearance of a double horn with two sets of slides, but the thumb valve is a piston rather than rotary valve. It doesn't seem to be an F/Bflat horn, but maybe an F/Eflat (?) instead. it has "US" faintly engraved on the bell making me think it may have been for a military band (lends credence to the Eflat idea, too) and I believe it also said "York" on it; it's in storage because it scares the cat when I try to play and I haven't seen it (the horn, not the cat) for a while, so I'm going by what memory a 76 year old has remaining, lol. It has what appears to be nickel plating that is in pretty decent shape and for the most part polishes up quite nicely. Have you ever seen or heard of a horn like this? Thanks

hello there, this is a great video but, I am switching from trumpet without a teacher to the horn using RUclips University. Would you be able to explain it with sheet music, I am having trouble understanding the difference between where c & b flat lay with the bass and treble flef.....my horn makes the right sound with 12 for b flat but don't understand where that is on paper with what clef. For trumpet we tune on C and I know for french horn the partials are much closer. Any tips for the transition?

Why does a my c on my B flat horn come out as a concert f? Also, my B flat horn has only 3 valves and one set.
Horns in C are very rare. Its most likely that you have a horn in either F or B flat :)
That sounds perfectly normal. THis is because playing a C on a French horn is always a concert F. It doesn't matter if the horn is tuned in F or B Flat, it will always be the same concert pitch :)

It depends on how u learned it. I know some horn players, who learned as a beginner to play the same notes as the trombone (bass key in C) to support the Tenor in a Choir.

Help! Beginner here! I have found that I have a B flat double french horn but find that most double horn lessons are in F. I am really confused. Do I use B flat fingerings below middle A and F fingers about middle A?? I don't quite know how to approach this new information?! :)

Dutch Van Der Linde you would use the trigger for notes higher than G in the staff.
Hi, intermediate player here!! Very confused after not playing for 14 years!! During my learning years, and years playing in orchestras I have always learned in a double french horn, but only learned how to play in Bb flat, not F. So never used the F side, on Bb fingerings. I have now just purchased a new double french horn, which sits naturally in F meaning I press the thumb key to play in Bb (B flat). Now, when I look for pieces to play online the majority are for Horn in F! Its been a while since I played so I can't remember how to transpose F pieces to Bb (B flat). Is there a better website where I can download pieces already transposed that you would reccomend, or how can I do this myself? Also, does knowing both fingerings (F and Bb) help with the range I can play? If I was to learn the F side fingerings would that help me easily play certain notes that I might struggle in Bb? Hope this isn't confusing and that you can help me.

Nothing is wrong with your horn, it just means that the horn is in B flat so you'll use the B flat fingers for your notes. So D will be 1 and 2 and E will be on 2nd. Let me know if this works for you! :) ^ ^

Same situation. French horn Omega OMFH015001 3 valves. D using 1 and 2. E using 2 only
I came here confusing about my new instrument. I came from tuba and I played in B flat, C and E flat. But our french horn is really amazing confusing haha
Sometimes my keys (3 valves) appears to fit on B flat scale hehe. Doing your exercise its in F like the seller told me
i hope she will answer this....acctually this is my 2nd question .... I have my horn Single Horn with 4 valves but when I use the Bb finger it does not sounding as D but when i tried it with 1 finger it sounds as D (confused here)
Hi @Batikabesa. That means that your horn sits naturally in F :) So you'll use the F horn fingering :) Hope that helps!

Hello, I have a question regarding my horn not blowing freely. It's been in storage for about 20 years. I got it out, now that I'm retired, and want to brush up on my playing skills. It has new corks and strings and has been oiled, but is so difficult to blow. Any suggestions? It's been in the case while in storage. Thanks so much.
Doug and Geri Richie is it difficult to blow air through or difficult to make a sound. Have you washed it out ?
Great suggestion! Always give your horn a bath once in a while esp if its been in storage. There might actually be something living (or not) in there! Haha this has happened before. Once you bathe it, it should sound better. If not - head to your local repair shop!
Could I use mellophone fingering for my horn?

Yes. It actually doesn't matter if you have a Bb or F horn, you can play pretty much everything with both of them.
Perhaps you can answer my question. I have an Olds Ambassador French horn, maybe from the 70s I'm guessing. It was old when I got it and I played it growing up until I got to highschool and traded up to a double horn and never played it again until now. Now my daughter is beginning to learn and I gave her this old horn. Well I noticed something interesting about it picking it back up while helping her. From middle C I just cannot hit a D or an E with it using F fingering, it's always flat. But as soon as I use b flat fingerings for those notes, I hit them right on. FYI I'm using a digital tuner and piano, so I know that is not an issue. Is it possible I have a b flat single horn with only 3 valves?

Hi! Yes it definitely possible for a horn to be in b flat and not have 4 valves. It just means that it was made to sit in one key. You can also get horns that sit in F alone. I usually go with the rule that if one set of fingering doesn't work, try the other! Sometimes the people you buy or rent them from also assume that because it has a number of valve it must be in a certain key. But really, the only way to find out is to try playing a few notes on it. @@donkeykong1906 Yes it's definitely possible! So many different types of horn have been made over the years due to changing fashions and tastes from the players and maker themselves! :):)
So I have a french but I haven't played it for a year. Why? Alright, so, The strings behind the keys keep on snapping even when we try to fix it. But then we found out that it is not my fault that it keeps on braking. We found out that the medal between the strings were made too tight so when I would play, the strings would rub and snap off. We have asked the company if we could trade my french horn with a new one. (BTW I just got my french horn beginning of last year so it's new) They are not allowing us so we might have to bye another few thousand dolor french horn :( Do you know what we could do? (Your double horn is the same as mine.)
That definitely sounds like the strings are too tight. You can get it restringed at a workshop for not too much money. That or switch to rotary valves

That's in concert pitch :) Because the French horn plays in F this equals to a C on the piano :)
