I've seen horns that intentionally had no spit valves for the alleged acoustic benefit and it's total lunacy. You'll never notice that, but you'll definitely notice all the time you waste pulling slides. In HS, I taped all the slides on my Conn 8D so I could pull them fast and replace them back where I had them. I used the 3rd valve a lot, and I had to dump it constantly. I have a ventil-fanfare with no spit valve and it's an absolute chore to dump it. Either rip out the monster tuning slide, or wait for the condensation to make the 3.5 foot trip out the leadpipe. Fortunately, it's no trouble on Rotary Flugelhorn. You just bring the horn up to play and all the condensation runs out the horn and into your mouth.
I used to sell Hans Hoyer Horns and Wagner Tuban in 79/80. Couldn't afford one then and still can't. Loved the sound. In middle school and highschool i would dump spit when ever there was a break between songs or during. Never had a problem not having a spit valve.
An important question to raise is this - from a repair/servicing point of view - are spare parts readily available? If not, and this is quite common with Chinese made instruments - then if something breaks (e.g. bent rotor etc), you will be up for a new horn or a pretty expensive repair bill...
I studied Horn from 1958 to 1970 in Los Angeles, CA, finishing up studying with Wendell Hoss. I played in the USAF NORAD Band. I never saw a French Horn with a spit valve. In fact, the very idea rather puts me off.
Thats really nice because my friend in band has been playing a single horn for a long time and wants a double horn this will be perfect! Also I have two questions 1. What mic do you use to record playing on your instruments 2. What mouthpiece do you use for euphonium?
Conspiracy theory: the only reason Trent finally finished his "All About The French Horn Part 2" video is because he knew he would be reviewing this instrument and preferred referencing that video rather than getting into the nitty-gritty of double horns and the like here.
Playing badly says Trent, promptly going on to play better than I could. I've probably played the double french horn maybe a dozen times in my 53+ years on this rock, and the rusty monstrosity I played convinced me it was a mediaeval torture instrument designed to shred your lip and make your intestines the same shape as all those wraps of tubing. Therefore it's nice to hear it handled properly, and that premium model in particular sounds as gorgeous as it looks.
I don't understand why the Alex has that huge change valve, but it's been part of the design from the start, in the 1950s. That makes it super obvious when someone copies the design, because they invariably use that huge change valve, too. I know that early Holtons had a piston change valve, and some early 20th-century British horns were all-piston valved. I still don't know why they used a tuba valve for a french horn.
It's an odd choice... I play an Alex 1103 which has the F/Bb valve on the other side to the 103, and it's a normal size (slightly smaller diameter than the other three rotors). Perhaps they were trying to make the radius through the rotor as large as possible (tight bend radii affect the tone quality)
Hi, just curious if it would be too late to switch from double bass to horn this late (I’m a going into senior year of high school and have college auditions coming up in about 5 months). I played trumpet for 3 years in middle school and am not completely new to brass but it’s been a while. I also feel my talents of hearing pitch well would be better suited to horn. Thanks! I really love the horn
Thanks Trent I’ve been looking around for a affordable horn but it’s really hard to trust some horns on the internet but since your friend seems to enjoy it I’ll look into buying this horn
Whats the best Horn to get? It's for my grandson who due to a brain surgey is paralysed on his right side. He is 15, has been playing every instrument in the pit. Want to march. He is musical! Used to be a sports ace, not now. Should I get a double Horn? He used to play the guitar and piano. Any ideas or help would be so welcome. And any you know of for sale, borrow, or give. Thanks Folks
Do you think they'll last long though? I want to finally be rid of my 200$ broken compensating double but no one does repairs within a thousand miles around my area
Probably not as free blowing. The quality of joints and bends and interior smoothness of tubing can make a big difference. So can the size and nature of the leadpipe.
@@TrentHamilton I have noticed that if the link provided is followed, the description ("about this item") of the horn says that the main valve linkage is string, but that's presumable incorrect. Since the horn appears to be unavailable for the foreseeable future, it's no doubt an irrelevant point, anyway.
Hi Trent, you didn't discuss the bell which is removable on the Alexander horn, and if the other one has its own suitcase. Is this a matter on the "cheaper" horn?
Looks like it's just available as a fixed bell based on a quick look at the website. In my experience, the detachable bell is only really useful if you fly or use public transport a lot. My 103 is vintage so doesn't have a detachable bell and I'd say its just something I got used to
My (old) Alex unlike the one shown has a fixed bell. On pro models (Alex, Paxman etc) It's simply an extra cost option when the original purchaser places their order, along with other choices like gold brass, nickel silver etc. Can be added later, but it's not cheap, plus you need a new case.
Yeah. Because high school kids aren’t clumsy at all. Can’t see anything bad potentially happening from having them empty water without a spit valve during a concert. Nothing at all. ROFL If this horn-shaped object came from the same factory as the “anthem” horn I tried, DO NOT BUY IT. Also, I wouldn’t argue that one’s primary concern with selecting a horn isn’t “the sound” - especially for high school students. It SHOULD be CONSISTENCY (can the horn actually be put in tune with itself? I’ve played a few that cannot) and the partials being where one expects them to be, again, especially important for high school/middle school students. If those two things are top notch, the “sound” should follow.
How does something like this compare to the significantly cheaper Cecilio Mendini horn?Excellent video. Wish I had a grand to drop on this; I always wanted to play the french horn.
@@TrentHamilton Gotcha. Is there a chance you could look at the brand, only because it's becoming popular in the budget space, and well-done brass videos thereof are few and far between. I wish I had a solid budget for a grand-and-a-half horn, but but as I don't right now, I'm wondering whether it'd be better to forgo or look into the Mendini horns. If no, I understand, but I thought it would do little harm to ask, given you responded.
Nice review. Just to let your viewers know that no matter what personal instrument you have ,ten thousand dollar or ten dollar horn you can not use your personal horn in a military or police paid status .You are given and official uniform equipment. After learning to play the French Horn and the Alto Trombone I found that I like the Alto Trombone much better. Alto Trombone is also much more rare and way cooler than French Horn.
Does this brand even exist anymore? The website at this moment appears to be selling pearls or just a place holder until someone else buys the etersound name... I wonder if this video should remain up if the company doesn't exist anymore.
I got really excited to see another French Horn vid.

My SystemBlue mellophone from HS does that. Shoves all the water down you throat.
I just bought a Grassi F/Bb double horn for 590€ and it sounds great! Detachable Bell and a marvellous case!

FYI, the Farkas Holton double horn has a water key in the leadpipe - AND a reverse tuning slide as well. Goddess Bless!
Love that little duet at the end! Bravo 👏

Very nice demonstration. Thanks
Trent I didn't think that you were "bad" at the French horn until now, don't worry you just need to practice it some more
Every time I do a horn dance, I quietly hum clown circus music in my head so I don’t feel so stupid on the stage…

Why the fist 👊 in the horn ?
The etersound sounded a little bit harder to play- like there was some more work involved
It could be because he wasn't used to it

Nah, brass colored. Some may be silver tho
